Join Your Faith Family and Community in Prayer
This month's diocesan E-Newsletter contains information on some special opportunities during the month of January to join in prayer with your Catholic community and other Christian communities. There are prayer vigils for the protection of the unborn, and Prayer Unity Services continue to be held for National Week of Prayer for Christian Unity.
As we are at the beginning of the New Year, we've included Spring events coming up in the diocese during 2015. We encourage parishes and ministries to consider submitting your events. Join Bishop Barbarito to Pray for the Unborn
 |
Father Brian King and Bishop Barbarito will participate in the prayer vigil to be held in downtown West Palm Beach on Jan. 22.
|
Join Most Reverend Gerald M. Barbarito and other faithful at 11 a.m. on Thursday, January 22 as we gather in prayer for the protection of the unborn child on the 42nd Anniversary of the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion. Bishop Barbarito will lead us in the rosary at the old courthouse in downtown West Palm Beach (corner of 3rd and N. Dixie).
Since the Supreme Court's decision in 1973, more than 56 million unborn victims have been aborted. In a joint statement, the Florida bishops state though they find encouragement by the decline in the number of abortions in Florida each year, pro-life advocates still face great opposition. The bishops state that abortion contributes to a "throwaway culture."
"By its legal acceptance, abortion dehumanizes the unborn child and contributes to what Pope Francis has called a 'throwaway culture' that does not view life as a gift but as a dispensable object only of value when useful to us. As a result, those populations who are most vulnerable outside the womb are also most vulnerable inside the womb. However, all human life, whether in or outside the womb, is sacred. One's worth cannot be determined by gender, race, health, age or financial status."
As their message continues, the bishops discuss the loving option of adoption, and how an abortion affects lives -- that of not just the woman, but also the life of the man.
"Too often behind an abortion is a story of a woman who feels terminating the life of her unborn child is her only option; she does not believe she has a choice. It is a decision void of authentic freedom built on fear and vulnerability. When faced with an unplanned pregnancy, adoption is a beautiful life-giving alternative. This 'yes' to life is an act of love that demonstrates the great courage and hope of a birthmother and the generosity of the adoptive parents.
Each abortion affects not only a woman who may be suffering, but involves a man who may be experiencing grief and guilt. Jesus Christ longs to extend his abundant mercy and love to these women and men, and the Church is here to assist them both in the process of healing and finding this peace. The reconciliation that so many experience is a source of joy."

Spend 9 Days in Prayer to End Abortion
The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) invites all to pray for the protection of all human life as part of a special novena called the 9 Days for Life. This period of prayer, penance, and pilgrimage will be held January 17-25 to mark the anniversary of the 1973 U.S. Supreme Court decision, Roe v. Wade, which legalized abortion throughout pregnancy. The 9 Days for Life novena encourages nationwide solidarity in prayer for daily intentions, including for couples experiencing infertility, those mourning the loss of a child through abortion, children in need of adoptive homes, and for an end to abortion and use of the death penalty. The 9 Days for Life initiative is part of the 2014-15 Respect Life Program of the USCCB with the theme "Each of Us is a Masterpiece of God's Creation," which is adapted from the words of Pope Francis' 2013 Day for Life greeting. In addition to the prayer intentions, each day of the program raises awareness on issues such as domestic violence, post-abortion healing, pornography addiction, and end-of-life matters. Resources for individuals and parishes for the 9 Days for Life novena are available in numerous ways and there are four ways to join the bishops and thousands of Catholics across the country coming together in prayer for a "culture of life."
Four Ways to Join the 9 Days for Life Initiative:
1. Join using the App 2. Join by Text Messaging 3. Join by Email 4. Join Online

An Invitation to Participate in National Week of Prayer for Christian Unity
We are a week into the diocese's observance of National Week of Prayer for Christian Unity which began on Sunday, January 11, and continues through January 24. Nationally, it is held January 18 through 25. The diocesan Office of Ecumenical and Interreligious Relations invites all to participate in any of the remaining Christian Unity events and prayer planned at various churches from Ft. Pierce, to Boca Raton and west in Wellington.
During National Week of Prayer for Christian Unity Christian Churches throughout the world will join in prayer asking the Lord to restore oneness to the Christian community. This oneness was ruptured at various times during the history of the Church, thankfully, most of the acrimony of the past is behind us, and Christians are more and more yearning for doctrinal unity and pastoral charity among all believers. The Graymoor Ecumenical Institute inaugurated the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity which is entering its 108th year in 2015. Below is a list of events for the remaining events of this prayerful time. Many of our diocesan Churches and Christian Churches in our community plan to participate at the Prayer Services. To find the participating parishes and for more details, please visit our online Events Calendar or call 561-775-9540.

Celebrate Catholic Schools Week
Join the Diocese of Palm Beach as it celebrates our Catholic Schools during National Catholic Schools Week. The national theme is "Catholic Schools: Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service."
Our Catholic schools have more than 6,000 students enrolled across the Diocese of Palm Beach. Our students are instructed in the faith on a daily basis, have exceptional academic programs and serve our communities in many ways! Our diocese is blessed to have 19 wonderful, faith-filled schools, including two preschool centers and three high schools. With your support, our diocesan schools schools help young people grow in their faith, excel academically and serve humbly.
Our schools continue to be very busy with implementing and carrying out the diocese's Strategic Vision 2020: Charting a Course for Excellence. Two years ago the Diocese of Palm Beach developed Strategic Vision 2020 which is based on the National Benchmarks for Effective Catholic Elementary and Secondary Schools. The Strategic Vision and the National Benchmarks guide us in four key areas: 1) Catholic Identity and Mission, 2) Academic Excellence, 3) Governance and Leadership, and 4) Operational Vitality. The amount of work already done on the plan is remarkable.

Starting January 4, the diocese's TV Mass started airing on Estrella TV West Palm Beach, a sister station of WPBF-25. The Mass now also airs at a new time. Instead of airing from 9:30 a.m. to 10 a.m., on Sundays our weekly Mass airs on Estrella from 9 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.
Estrella TV West Palm Beach can be found on:
- For Comcast customers: Channels 208 & 616

The diocese asks those who have loved ones who are homebound or may minister in hospitals and nursing homes to please share this important program change with those you visit.
If you have questions about the change, please contact the diocese's Office of Communications at 561-775-9529 or visit our diocesan TV Mass web page.
*Special notice for U-Verse customers: the instructions provided above may be different for you. You may wish to purchase a low-cost Digital Antenna to watch the televised Mass. Please contact the Office of Communications should you need assistance.
