  Snowflake Campaign

Snow is in the forecast once again for the Gunter Mountain community thanks to the friends and supporters of the Kate Duncan Smith DAR School.  As the holidays approach and 2015 winds to a close, we ask that you remember KDS in your year-end giving so that we may provide a Christmas to remember for Gunter Mountain families in need.

Celebrations Held at KDS Salute
U.S. Military Veterans

Since the birth of our Nation, American patriots have stepped forward to serve our country and defend our way of life.  With honor and distinction, generations of servicemen and women have taken up arms to win our independence, preserve our Union, and secure our freedom. On Veterans Day, we salute the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines, and Coast Guardsmen who have rendered the highest service any American can offer and we are reminded of our solemn obligation: to serve our veterans as well as they have served us.
KDS Football Team Has a Magical Season

The KDS Football Team ended the 2015 season with a best-ever record of eight wins and 3 losses and a memorable trip across the state to compete in a 4-A state playoff game. A day after breaking into the ASWA football poll for the first time in school history, the 10th ranked KDS DAR Patriots made the long venture to Fayette, Alabama, for the opening round of the Class 4A state playoffs. Unfortunately, their magical season came to an end with a 49-38 loss to the Fayette County Tigers.
  Halloween Happenings in Pre-K

KDS teacher Chellee Bailey and her pre-kindergarten class had a wonderful time celebrating Halloween while honing the fine motor skills of the four-year-olds.

Classic Cars Visit KDS!

More than 50 Model A cars and their 100 passengers made a visit to KDS DAR School on October 17 as part of the "Sweet Home Alabama Model A Tour".  The cars travelled from various parts of the country including Indiana, Florida, and even Minnesota!  During the orientation, guests learned about the DAR and the history of KDS.  Members of the High School Leo Club escorted guests to Becker-Horton Hall, the Pennsylvania Log Cabin, the Jacobs Building, and Nan Roberts Lane Chapel.

FACS Students Participate in Varied
Learning Experiences

Students enrolled in the Family and Consumer Sciences program at KDS learn many practical skills - everything from cooking, to sewing, to childcare, to household management, to architecture.  But while these students are learning, they are also participating in community service projects and having fun.
If you have a "Did You Know?" article about KDS School, the Grant community, or the state of Alabama that you would like to share with readers of our monthly newsletter, submit it  to Heather Green at hgreen@nehp.net.  If you have pictures in a digital format that relate to the article, submit them along with the article.  Many of our readers are new to the area and do not know the wonderful, rich history of KDS School and the Town of Grant.  I am sure they will be enlightened with something that you know and take for granted that everyone else knows too.
