KDS DAR School was well represented during the 124th Continental Congress of the Daughters of the American Revolution in Washington, D.C. June 22-29.  Executive Director Heather Green; KDS teacher Beth Cagle; KDS staff member April Pendergrass; Board Chairman Peggy Johnson; and student representatives Erin Sutphin and Alex Prickett enjoyed a busy week of meeting with Daughters from across the country and throughout the world to share with them the story of KDS, the "Gem of Gunter Mountain."

NSDAR Provides Funds for KDS Projects

KDS received a wonderful gift in the form of contributions from the Friends of DAR Schools Fund during the Friday evening DAR School Supper.  National School Chairman Sally Bueno made the presentation following the KDS School report.

Approximately $29,282 was awarded for the Elementary School Arts Enrichment Program and supplies, the purchase and installation of a fire alarm system for the Doris Pike White Gymnasium, scholarship renewals for KDS graduates, and utilities expenses.

  Junior Members Show Their Pride

A highlight of Continental Congress each year is certainly the Junior Membership Luncheon.  This year's event was no exception.

The Junior Membership Committee of the DAR has for more than 75 years raised money for the Helen Pouch Memorial Fund through the sales of nationally approved Junior products at the state and national levels as well as the contributions of chapters for Achievement Award credit.  Those funds are awarded to the DAR Schools annually for projects which directly benefit children.  During this year's luncheon, National Junior Membership Committee Chairman Cecile Wimberley presented KDS with funds to sponsor new carpeting for the Jacobs Building, new playground equipment, laminating equipment for the high school, art classroom equipment and supplies, and student health funds.

  A Perfect Season - KDS B Team 1963

After an article in this newsletter last fall speculated that the undefeated season of the KDS Middle School Football Team may have been a first for the school, it was learned there was another such 'dream' season. Former KDS Executive Director and Class of 1965 graduate Henry Click sent a copy of a newspaper article including a photo of the 1963 KDS Basketball B Team.

If you have a "Did You Know?" article about KDS School, the Grant community, or the state of Alabama that you would like to share with readers of our monthly newsletter, submit it  to Heather Green at hgreen@nehp.net.  If you have pictures in a digital format that relate to the article, submit them along with the article.  Many of our readers are new to the area and do not know the wonderful, rich history of KDS School and the Town of Grant.  I am sure they will be enlightened with something that you know and take for granted that everyone else knows too.
