Valentines from NSDAR
On Valentine's Day, KDS students received a sweet surprise in the form of hundreds of special cards from NSDAR. For the February National Board of Management meeting, NSDAR President General Lynn Young asked the members to make valentine cards for the children of the DAR Schools as a community service project. The big box of cards arrived just in time to make Valentine's Day memorable for the children of KDS DAR School.

California Daughters Sponsor Desks
With the rising cost of educational programs and the ever-present need for maintenance on aging buildings, the replacement of essential items such as desks can sometimes be overlooked.
With the generous support of California DAR members and chapters, we are well on our way to replacing old, damaged and broken desks - some of which are more than 25 years old. The "I Bought a Desk for KDS" campaign has the goal of replacing 180 desks so each 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grade classroom will have new desks by the end of the 2014-2015 school year.

On Saturday, January 31, KDS honored members of past women's basketball teams who won Area/District Tournaments and/or made State Tournament appearances. It was great to see these Legends of Basketball back home at KDS! The photo represents 19 teams from 1988 to present, including the State Champions of 1989.

KDS 2nd Graders Work to Help "Furry Friends"
Students in Mrs. Stanfield's 2nd grade class recently completed a project to raise money to help homeless animals in the area. The idea for the project began when, in reading class, the students read a story about a school principal who sold all his ties to help raise money for the school playground. In talking about his generosity, his wanting to help others, and discussing the vocabulary words in the story, such as fundraiser and budget, the students decided they wanted to create a fund for a good cause. After a class discussion, it was decided that they would raise money to help local animals that didn't have homes.

If you have a "Did You Know?" article about KDS School, the Grant community, or the state of Alabama that you would like to share with readers of our monthly newsletter, submit it to Heather Green at hgreen@nehp.net. If you have pictures in a digital format that relate to the article, submit them along with the article. Many of our readers are new to the area and do not know the wonderful, rich history of KDS School and the Town of Grant. I am sure they will be enlightened with something that you know and take for granted that everyone else knows too. |
