  Dedication Day Reminder

Dedication Day 2014 festivities of the Kate Duncan Smith DAR School are scheduled for October 9th and 10th. This year's activities will commemorate the 90th anniversary of the founding of KDS and will be the 90th Dedication Day.  Anticipation is high as plans are made to welcome DAR members from across the country to dedicate gifts from the previous year. Thursday activities planned include lunch with the students, campus tours, classroom visits, a craft show, and an open house to see the renovation as well as the donor wall at Becker-Horton Hall. Friday will be the official Dedication Day program and the Famous Basket Lunch.

Please make plans to be with the students and staff of KDS on this special day! The Schedule of Events is packed full of activities and happenings, and everyone is invited.  If you plan to be with us for one or more of the events, please complete the attached registration form and submit it as soon as possible.  For questions or additional information, please call the KDS DAR School Administrative Office at 256-728-4236.

  Homecoming 2014

Join us on Friday, September 26 for KDS DAR Patriot Homecoming.  The Patriots will take on Pope John Paul Catholic High School, with kick-off at 7 p.m.  The Homecoming Court will be presented, and the king and queen will be crowned during half-time.  Make plans to be a part of this time-honored tradition.

 Constitution Week

Most Americans know that July 4th is our nation's birthday.  Far fewer Americans know that September 17th is the birthday of our government, the date in 1787 on which delegates to the Philadelphia Convention completed and signed the U.S. Constitution. The ideas on which America was founded--commitments to the rule of law, limited government and the ideals of liberty, equality and justice--are embodied in the Constitution, the oldest written constitution of any nation on Earth. Constitution Day is intended to celebrate not only the birthday of our government, but the ideas that make us Americans. Thus, it is most appropriate that students, teachers and administrators of this school founded by the Daughters of the American Revolution observe and celebrate Constitution Week.

History Lesson through Art and Music

On September 4th KDS students in kindergarten through 8th grade were treated to a special history lesson presented through patriotic music and the art of Mr. Cliff Beamann. The stirring patriotic program called "God and Country", drawn with some of the most important symbols of our American heritage, enthralled the KDS kindergarten through 2nd grade students.  Appreciation of our unique American freedoms and our responsibilities of good citizenship make this program a perfect fit for students at a school with such close ties to the Daughters of the American Revolution.

KDS DAR School Executive Director Heather Green was honored to be invited to speak at the September meeting of the Cascade Chapter, NSDAR, of Bellevue, Washington. Heather, along with Alabama State School Chairman Tammy Clemons, shared the KDS story with a great group of DAR members and guests at the Chapter's first meeting of the year. Thank you to Cascade Chapter Regent Lanabeth Horgen and Chapter members for their hospitality!

If you have a "Did You Know?" article about KDS School, the Grant community, or the state of Alabama that you would like to share with readers of our monthly newsletter, submit it  to Heather Green at hgreen@nehp.net.  If you have pictures in a digital format that relate to the article, submit them along with the article.  Many of our readers are new to the area and do not know the wonderful, rich history of KDS School and the Town of Grant.  I am sure they will be enlightened with something that you know and take for granted that everyone else knows too.
