A New School Year Begins
The 2014-2015 school year began on August 12th, the 90th 'first day' of school for the Kate Duncan Smith DAR School. As the carillon chimes in the Pennsylvania Bell Tower welcomed students to campus, the hallways and sidewalks quickly came alive with the voices and laughter of children excited to begin another school year.

Becker Hall Undergoing Maintenance
The "Old Gym" at the DAR School in Grant is currently undergoing some maintenance to repair rotten and damaged logs. The vertical pine log structure was built in 1937, and is home to the school's elementary physical education classes and other special programs. Becker Hall, the log gymnasium constructed on the campus of Kate Duncan Smith DAR School in 1937, is an area architectural treasure and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

2014 Alabama District Workshops

Alabama's District Workshops stretched from one end of the state to the other. This 800 mile trip had KDS Executive Director Heather Green visiting Mobile, Auburn, and Birmingham on August 21, 22, and 23. Heather manned the school's booth, talking with the more than 450 Alabama Daughters in attendance. A big thank you is expressed to all Alabama Daughters and Chapters for donating school supply funds, adopting classes and shopping at the KDS booth!

KDS Begins Pre-Kindergarten Program
KDS Elementary is excited to be able to offer a pre-kindergarten class for 4-year-olds. This year, the Alabama legislature voted to fund 125 new Pre-K classrooms across Alabama. KDS Elementary applied for and was given one of the grants to start the program. The class is funded by funds allocated through the Alabama Office of School Readiness.

New Desks for a New School Year
With the rising cost of educational programs and the ever-present need for maintenance on aging buildings, the replacement of essential items such as desks can sometimes be overlooked. However, thanks to the support from DAR friends nationwide, the number of new desks needed for KDS Elementary classrooms has diminished by 34.
