Dear Neighbor,

Three weeks ago, we began the process for the 2016 Aldermanic Menu Program by releasing our block audit survey. Through the menu program, each ward is allocated $1.32 million annually for infrastructure and other capital improvements. The block audit gives residents an opportunity to examine the conditions of infrastructure on their block, and if you haven't had a chance to complete one it isn't too late.

The 47th Ward Office will accept block audits until December 11th. To complete the audit online, please click here. Paper copies are also available for pick-up at the 47th Ward Office. You can use this note sheet to walk your block and take notes before  complete the audit. The 47th Ward Team will then score the audits, and we will hold our annual vote for menu spending in February of 2016.  We expect our 2016 menu requests to be ready for submission to the City in April.

I want to thank all of you who have already sent in your audit for the 2016 Menu Program. I appreciate you taking the time to participate and inform how our dollars are spent in the 47th Ward.

Wolcott Sewer Main Replacement
Contractors working with the Department of Water Management have been working to replace the sewer main from 1905 under Wolcott from Lawrence to Winnemac for the past several weeks. Today, we received confirmation that there has been a change in the schedule for this project.

Once the crews currently installing the sewer main are north of Ainslie, they will halt their progress on Wolcott and mobilize to put a temporary concrete surface on the 4800 block. We expect to have this concrete poured before Christmas. Once it is down, parking will be restored on the 4800 block.

Work will continue in the intersection at Lawrence Avenue while the 4800 block is restored. Once the work in the intersection at Lawrence is complete, the crew will mobilize to do the same at the intersection of Winnemac & Wolcott. Upon completion of the work in the intersection at Winnemac, crews will return to Wolcott and continue installing the new sewer main under the street between Ainslie and Winnemac. They expect to return to the sewer main installation under the street in March of 2016.

Final project completion, including asphalt, concrete, and landscaping restoration, is expected in May of 2016. Thank you for your patience as crews continue their work. If you have any questions, please contact my office.

Shop Local
I encourage everyone to shop local and support our neighborhood businesses this holiday season. We have some of the greatest small and mid-sized businesses in Chicago right here in the 47th Ward. They, along with their Chambers of Commerce, support our neighborhood and add tremendous value to our commercial corridors. There are wonderful promotions and other holiday programming happening throughout the ward. You can find information on chamber of commerce promotions below.

Have a great weekend!

Sincerely,
Ameya

The Debt Relief Program will provide individuals and businesses the opportunity to resolve outstanding debt and avoid further costs and collection activity (e.g. driver's license suspension, vehicle immobilization, business license revocation, and wage garnishment).

Welcome New Business: Bar Rista Cafe, 1834 W. Montrose
Bar Rista Café has officially opened its doors and is taking the neighborhood back to the basics. Located just a block down from the Montrose Brown Line, diners will enjoy a laid-back vibe paired with fresh, homemade American classics served with a twist.

Restaurant owner, Mitch Gundogdu, is confident that the lunch and dinner menu ranging from stuffed portable mushrooms to the Caribbean chicken breast entrée, will fight off any "corner curse" that previously blighted the restaurant location. A local diner favorite has proven to be the hand-pressed Angus beef Rista Burger, served on a fresh baked pretzel bun with bacon, avocado, and homemade chipotle mayonnaise. The weekend brunch menu has also been received well by those neighbors looking to relax with classic cuisine and Julius Meinl coffee. The admired brunch time Bottomless Mimosas has the friendly staff standing by with the next refill.

High-quality cooking is only enhanced by custom cocktails and bottles of wine served at the full bar. Equipped with two TVs to keep up with the latest Chicago sporting events, draft beers are offered on a rotating basis. Complimentary samples of the signature Mom's Kitchen Cider has made the Kentucky whiskey infused with fall spices mixed with apple cider, a hot menu item.

Bar Rista Café will be open Monday - Thursday 11:00am- 11:00pm. Friday from 11:00am - 12:00am, Saturday and Sunday open for brunch from 10:00am-2:00pm and closing at 12:00am. Bar Rista is also available to host your next party, fundraiser or corporate event. For more information, please visit: www.barristachicago.com or call 872-241-9300.
Chicago Market
Mark and Susan Dawson are hosting a meeting for the Chicago Market, a new organic food cooperative, at their home on Thursday night, December 17, at 7 PM.  They are looking to encourage more local residents to become owner/members. They live at 2425 West Leland, near the Western L stop on the Brown Line elevated train.

The plan is for the Chicago Market to be community-owned.  They would offer local, sustainably-farmed and organic produce, meat and dairy products, as well as grocery staples, dry goods, bulk foods, and beer and wine. They also seek to offer a butcher shop and a juice and coffee bar, and a place to take part in classes, workshops, meetings, and performances.

Please jointhem to learn about an initiative that could bring an excellent option for healthy food to the north side.

FREE, yes FREE, Rain Barrels are available to everyone who wants to disconnect their downspouts. Thanks to the 47th Ward partnership with Metropolitan Water Reclamation District & Chicago Historic Bungalow Association. You may request up to 4 rain barrels! The next helpful step you can take is to plant a rain garden for your overflow; instead of having water in your basement, alley or the street.

Requests for FREE Rain Barrels are coming in. Disconnecting your downspouts has many benefits. Check it out: http://www.rainbarrelguide.com/

There is less open land in our neighborhood, with that comes more water with nowhere to go. Our streets are designed to hold water, then to slowly drain - but with these larger rain events there is more water than our combined system can handle. Does your alley flood? Does storm-water runoff from your garage go into the alley; does it seem that there is more water on your property than ever before?

Talk to your neighbors. Help one another to disconnect gutters. The more houses on your block that use rain barrels the less flooding you'll have.   Please contact Dara@chicago47.org

Safe Cycling Classes
Are you interested in the fun and convenience of bicycling but feel nervous about getting out on 2-wheels? Consider taking the Save Cycling Class, a 3-hour introduction to the basics of riding a bike safely in traffic, offered by the Active Transportation Alliance. Covering the rules of the road for cyclists, handling intersections, commuting tips/tricks, as well as picking out the right bike and basic maintenance, you will spend 1/5 hour in the classroom & 1.5 hours in a practice area before practicing on low-traffic streets. Classes will be held the 2nd Saturday of every month: December 12. Click here to see the full course description.

Want to play or learn how to play Mah Jong? Join other like-minded women for a couple hours of bam, crack, east, dot...1pm; 2nd & 4th Friday of the month at Northcenter Senior Center.

Thanks to all of you who donated blankets/towels for the shelters. A car load was taken to PAWS. Please keep them coming.

If you or a neighbor is a shut-in, a Hot Meal is available every Saturday afternoon from the kind volunteers at Pilgrim Lutheran Church; call Janet Taylor 773-777-4052 or Jackie Mokszycki 773-961-8740

Do you garden on a corner or parkway?
Please take a look at the list of upcoming water main projects in the 'infrastructure update' section of the newsletter. You may have to move your plants so they won't be destroyed or disappear.

Please be sure to report any drain that does not clear within 24 hours of rainfall to the 47th Ward Office or 311.

Please bring in your old batteries for recycling. Keep them out of the landfill.

Don't have a use for your old cell phones? Drop them off at the alderman's office. We collect year round for Cell Phones for Soldiers. There couldn't be an easier way to help our soldiers stay in touch with family & friends.

Forward Chicago, a grass-roots, all volunteer, non-profit brings active, involved, engaged folks together. Sewer Main Replacement for Wolcott from Lawrence to Winnemac
Contractors woking with the Dept. of Water Management will begin replacing the sewers from 1905 under Wolcott from Winnemac to Lawrence soon. No parking restrictions will be necessary at all times due to the sandy nature of the soil and instability of the trench. Traffic diversion is in place at Lawrence & Wolcott, and the left turn is restricted on Wolcott from WB Lawrence

Once the crews currently installing the sewer main are north of Ainslie, they will halt their progress and mobilize to put a temporary concrete surface on the 4800 block of Wolcott. We expect to have this concrete down before Christmas. Once it is down, parking will be restored on the 4800 block.

Work will continue in the intersection at Lawrence Avenue while the 4800 block is restored. Once the work in the intersection at Lawrence is complete, the crew will mobilize to do the same at the intersection of Winnemac and Wolcott. Upon completion of the work in the intersection at Winnemac, crews will return to Wolcott to continue installing the new sewer main under the street between Ainslie and Winnemac. This is currently projected to happen in March 2016.

Final asphalt, concrete, and landscaping restoration is expected to be completed in May of 2016.
