Dear Neighbor,

Next Thursday is Thanksgiving and I have a lot to be thankful for. This year, I am thankful for all of your hard work and advocacy. You didn't hear? WE DID IT!!!!! On Wednesday, November 18, 2015, the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) announced the return of the #11 Lincoln Bus and the 31st Street Bus under a new pilot program. Bus service is set to resume in the Spring of 2016!

The CTA eliminated the #11 Lincoln Bus which ran on Lincoln Avenue between the Western Brown Line and Fullerton Avenue in the Winter of 2012. Since then, I have been partnering with elected officials, community groups, chambers of commerce, senior centers, businesses, and community members to advocate for the return of the bus line. The bus was a lifeline for many residents in our community and when it was eliminated, many people in our community suffered. So over the last three years, we wrote letters, sent emails, made phone calls, filled out surveys, knocked on doors, donned #11 Bus t-shirts, attended budget hearings, and linked arms with one another to advocate for the return of our bus.

In the Spring of 2015, we joined forces with Ald. Patrick D. Thompson (11), the Chinatown community, the Bridgeport Alliance, IIRON, and Rev. Tom Gaulke from First Trinity Church to form the Crosstown Bus Coalition. Why? We shared a common issue: each of our communities lost a critical bus line. Our southside neighbors had been working to resume bus service along 31st St since the route was eliminated in 1997. Our community had been working to restore the #11 Lincoln Bus since 2012. By joining forces, we saw an opportunity to advocate for citywide equity around bus service and show that northside and southside communities could work together around a common issue. And for the last 10 months, that's what we've been doing.

For the last five months, the Crosstown Bus Coalition has been attending CTA hearings and board meetings. At each meeting, coalition members discussed the need for bus service to ensure seniors could continue aging place. Business owners discussed how bus service could bring additional customers to their shops and restaurants. Community members described their hardships due to the loss of bus service. In October, I presented the CTA Board with a letter signed by every elected official representing the eliminated portion of the #11 Bus route. The letter was signed by: Senate President John Cullerton, Sen. Heather Steans, Rep. Ann Williams, Rep. Greg Harris, Com. Bridget Gainer, and Com. John Fritchey, and Ald. Michele Smith. Ald. Patrick D. Thompson presented a similar letter signed by elected officials from the southside.

And thanks to everyone's collective efforts, the CTA worked with us over the last couple months and announced a pilot program to restore both bus lines next spring. Ridership will determine whether the route/s are brought back permanently. To ensure we have strong ridership, I am going to convene a local task force made up of our community partners. More on the pilot program and the local task force soon!

But today, let's celebrate! We did this together and together we proved that grassroots community organizing can work. Most importantly, we worked with our neighbors from the southside to restore two bus lines! Thank you!

There are so many people to thank. So here goes:

I want to thank all the elected officials who made the pilot possible. They include: Senate President John Cullerton, Sen. Heather Steans, Rep. Ann Williams, Rep. Greg Harris, Com. Bridget Gainer, and Com. John Fritchey, Ald. Michele Smith, Ald. Tom Tunney, Ald. Scott Waguespack, Ald. Patrick O'Connor, and Ald. Patrick D. Thompson.

I want to thank all of our Bridgeport partners. They include: Bridgeport Alliance, IIRON, C.W. Chan, Coalition for A Better Chinese American Community, Ruby Pinto, Rev. Tom Gaulke, Rene Paquin, Toby Chow, Quade Gallagher, Benjamin Huey, and many more.

I want to thank all of our community partners. They include: Liza Martin, Christopher Bakker, Pierce Bakker, Rick Kallao, Sandra Adams, Jeff DeLong, Lindsay Eanet, Helene Wineberg, Karen Kolb Flude, Jean Rogers, Adam Walsh, Sandra Shifrin, Janise Humphrey, Brian Martin, Marilyn Bade, Winnie Thivel, Perry Raniere, Agnes Mamic, Paz Endriga, Marge Long, May Ogawa, Jean Fletcher, LaVerne Hickey, Lilly Young, John Mikols, Samantha Stenzel, Frank Sherman, Jerry Perkins, Marvin Childress, Laurine Clark, Deborah Stewart,
Leonora Llanes, Alan Kohen, Northcenter Chamber of Commerce, Lakeview Chamber of Commerce, Lincoln Square Ravenswood Chamber of Commerce, Roscoe Village Chamber of Commerce, Center for Neighborhood Technology, Northcenter Neighborhood Association, and the countless individuals who attended meetings, signed petitions, sent emails and helped push for the bus to return.

Finally, I want to thank Mayor Emanuel, CTA President Dorval Carter, CTA Board Chairman Terry Peterson, the entire CTA Board, and CTA Intergovernmental Affairs Director Jeff Wilson. I also want to thank the following people from the Mayor's team: David Spielfogel, Michael Rendina, and Sean Repelyea. Over the last few years I've asked you to make calls and send letters and emails advocating for the return of the #11 Lincoln Bus. Today, I am asking you to send a note of thanks. Let's thank Mayor Emanuel and the CTA for hearing us and for working so hard to restore our bus lines.

Since this is our last newsletter before the Thanksgiving holiday, I want to take an opportunity to thank a few more people and businesses who make our community great:

All the 47th Ward Front desk volunteers. We have a small army of volunteers that contribute to our constituent service operation. These volunteers donate hundreds of hours of their time to help you and the 47th ward office. I am so thankful for their public service. A special thank you to: Marilyn Donovan, Mary Kiley Wulffen, Bette Vidina, Joni Croll, Carol Rizzolo, Char Kawa, Ross Silverberg, John Diebel, Lenore Kimmel, Tana Durnbaugh, and Rhoda Friedman.

Our local small businesses for making our neighborhood such a great place to live! Remember November 28th is national Small Business Saturday - enjoy your local businesses.

My dedicated 47th Ward team and the 47th Ward Streets and Sanitation crew. A big thank you to Jim, Ernie, Brad, and Dara. Also, a major thank you to Erick Norton (47th Ward Superintendent) and the dedicated men and women of Streets and Sanitation. They work very hard to keep our streets and alleys clean and do so without any fanfare.

And, finally, I want to thank my wife and best friend Charna. I couldn't ask for a better partner.

As you can see, I have a lot to be thankful for this year. So one more time, thank you.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday.

Sincerely,
Ameya

City of Chicago Debt Relief Program
As part of the 2016 Budget passed by City Council on October 28, 2015 the City of Chicago will be offering a Debt Relief Program to individuals and businesses that owe eligible debt to the City. The Debt Relief Program will provide individuals and businesses the opportunity to resolve outstanding debt and avoid further costs and collection activity (e.g. driver's license suspension, vehicle immobilization, business license revocation, and wage garnishment).

The program will be open from November 15th until December 31st. For complete information, please click here.

Beat 2032 CAPS Meeting

The Beat 2032 CAPS Meeting has been rescheduled to December 1st, 7pm at 4900 N. Damen.

Block Audits - Available NOW
Each year, every ward is allocated $1.32 million in aldermanic menu funds to pay for infrastructure improvements. The 47th Ward's aldermanic menu dollars have been spent for this year and a full report on last year's process and results is available on our website.  It is now time to begin the process for the 2016 Aldermanic Menu Program!

We give everyone the opportunity to complete an audit of their block. This audit is the first step in our menu process and provides our office with information on which improvements are needed in particular areas. The block audit for 2015-2016 is now online and you can participate by clicking here.  If you would like to complete this on paper, please pick up a copy from the office at 4243 N Lincoln. You can use this note sheet  to walk your block and take note before sitting down at your computer to complete the audit. We will be accepting completed audits until Friday, December 4th. The 47th Ward Team will then score the audits, and we will hold our annual vote for menu spending in February of 2016.  We expect our 2016 menu requests to be ready for submission to the City in April.

If you have any additional questions about completing a block audit or our menu process, please contact the 47th Ward office.

Street Sweeping

Arterial street sweeping ended on October 31st. The rest of the season's street sweeping schedule is available on chicago47.org. Be sure to place close attention for posted signs, and move your car so the sweeper can get as many leaves off of the street as possible.

Welcome New Business: Band of Bohemia, 4710 N. Ravenswood
Band of Bohemia, the buzzed-about culinary brewhouse in Ravenswood conceived by a team of Alinea alum, Craig Sindelar and Michael Carroll, officially opened its doors!
The brewhouse's opening fall menu will be driven by a collection of five in-house brewed ales by Carroll, featuring a broad range of flavor profiles, including grilled apple and tarragon; roasted maitake and toasted basmati rice; roasted beet and thyme; orange, chicory and rye; and the Culinary Noble, Band of Bohemia's flagship house beer named for its use of noble hops, which will always appear on the menu.

The rotation of the remaining four beers will be dictated by the seasons and dexterously complemented by a refined menu as envisioned by executive chef, Matt DuBois, and chef de cuisine, Kevin McMullen. Diners will have the option to order various items off the menu a la carte, as paired with the appropriate beer, cocktail or wine; a prix fixe tasting menu will also be available, including three small plates paired with three of the rotating seasonal ales for those patrons looking to experience Band of Bohemia's philosophy in its multifaceted entirety. This might include a bison tartare with matsutake, blueberry, malt, daikon and cured egg, paired with the orange chicory rye, or breaded foie gras with fig, pickled onion, lemon, black pepper and port to complement the roasted beet and thyme. Larger format, shared plates will be paired with the Culinary Noble and often showcase Band of Bohemia's custom-made Argentinian grill, an impressive centerpiece for the open kitchen.

The menu also boasts a complementary cocktail list curated by prolific Acadia vet, Carlos Matias and a selective wine list by Sindelar, former head sommelier at Alinea. Non-alcoholic pairing beverages will be created by Tom Santelle, another former Alinea member, and include a rosemary lemon espresso with juniper soda, and barrel-aged, Maldon salt and marigold cappuccino during dinner service.

The culinary brewhouse will regularly be open for to-go coffee service in the mornings, Monday-Saturday from 6:30 a.m.-2:00 p.m., reopening for dinner service from 5:00 p.m.-10:00 p.m., Tuesday-Saturday. The bar will be open from 4:30 p.m.-12:00 a.m., Tuesday-Saturday.

Chicago Market
Mark and Susan Dawson are hosting a meeting for the Chicago Market, a new organic food cooperative, at their home on Thursday night, December 17, at 7 PM.  They are looking to encourage more local residents to become owner/members. They live at 2425 West Leland, near the Western L stop on the Brown Line elevated train.

The plan is for the Chicago Market to be community-owned.  They would offer local, sustainably-farmed and organic produce, meat and dairy products, as well as grocery staples, dry goods, bulk foods, and beer and wine. They also seek to offer a butcher shop and a juice and coffee bar, and a place to take part in classes, workshops, meetings, and performances.

Please jointhem to learn about an initiative that could bring an excellent option for healthy food to the north side.

Add them to your compost. Or put them in large garbage bags, keep adding crushed leaves every time you rake, let the air out of the bag and use them next spring for mulch.

FREE, yes FREE, Rain Barrels are available to everyone who wants to disconnect their downspouts. Thanks to the 47th Ward partnership with Metropolitan Water Reclamation District & Chicago Historic Bungalow Association. You may request up to 4 rain barrels! The next helpful step you can take is to plant a rain garden for your overflow; instead of having water in your basement, alley or the street.

Requests for FREE Rain Barrels are coming in. Disconnecting your downspouts has many benefits. Check it out: http://www.rainbarrelguide.com/

There is less open land in our neighborhood, with that comes more water with nowhere to go. Our streets are designed to hold water, then to slowly drain - but with these larger rain events there is more water than our combined system can handle. Does your alley flood? Does storm-water runoff from your garage go into the alley; does it seem that there is more water on your property than ever before?

Talk to your neighbors. Help one another to disconnect gutters. The more houses on your block that use rain barrels the less flooding you'll have.   Please contact Dara@chicago47.org

Safe Cycling Classes
Are you interested in the fun and convenience of bicycling but feel nervous about getting out on 2-wheels? Classes will be held the 2nd Saturday of every month: November 14 & December 12. Click here to see the full course description.

Lawrence Avenue Streetscape

FINAL STAGE: The streetscape project is currently wrapping up, as the contractor only has a few small items to address. If additional concrete removal and replacement is required by the City due to some of the spalling issues, this work will require additional time. A few remaining trees that were damaged will be replaced and a few missing plants will be installed in the infiltration planters. Also, the last section of fence at Claremont Plaza will be installed. Once the project has been approved by the City, the SSAs will assume maintenance and a number of items will remain under warranty.

As always, pay close attention to parking restrictions.

Ravenswood Metra Station
  • The new station opened in early May (west side, for outbound trains)!
  • Metra Phase II: Design and engineering work is currently being performed for improvements to the east side of the tracks and will be put out to bid once complete. Construction of the 11 new bridges and new station (east side, for inbound trains) is expected to start in spring 2016 will last approximately 18 months. Work on the east side will move faster than on the west side since the track is currently in place there and extensive retaining wall work is not necessary.  The middle track will also be removed as part of this project.
Water Main Replacement Damen & Lincoln from Addison to Irving Park
Contractors working with the Department of Water Management are replacing the water mains from 1890 under Damen & Lincoln from Addison to Irving Park. The water main installation is complete on Damen, and service transfers are nearing completion. Contractors have begun capping their trench with concrete and making their final connections. Lincoln main installation is progressing and will be completed in December. Where needed, Parking will be restricted M-F 7am to 4pm and restrictions will be staged to the greatest extent possible. Full restoration will come when the weather warms in the SpringFor more information on this project, please click here.

Sewer Main Replacement for Wolcott from Lawrence to Winnemac
Contractors woking with the Dept. of Water Management will begin replacing the sewers from 1905 under Wolcott from Winnemac to Lawrence soon. No parking restrictions will be necessary at all times due to the sandy nature of the soil and instability of the trench. Traffic diversion is in place at Lawrence & Wolcott, and the left turn is restricted on Wolcott from WB Lawrence. Crews foresee having the new street constructed between Lawrence and Ainslie by mid-December. For complete information on this project, please click here
