On this day in 1925, John William Carson, who will become known to most of America as the longtime host of the popular late-night TV program The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, is born in Corning, Iowa.

Dear Neighbor,

Each year, every ward is allocated $1.32 million through the Aldermanic Menu program to pay for infrastructure improvements and other capital projects. This week, I want to share the items that were funded in 2015. Please click here to review this year's 47th Ward Aldermanic Menu. Projects funded include:
  • 7 alley resurfacings
  • 3 curb & gutter projects
  • 3 sidewalk projects
  • 8 concrete alley aprons
  • 6 street paint marking improvements
  • 4 blocks of new street lights on residential blocks
  • 9 blocks of residential street resurfacing
  • 16 pedestrian crossing signs
  • 2 pedestrian countdown clocks
  • 30 tree plantings

If you see a project on the summary that has been funded and is not yet completed, it will be done by Spring 2016. This year's process had more participation than ever before, and I want to thank everyone who took time to complete one of the 176 block audits or cast one of the close to 2000 votes on various projects.

The first step in determining which projects to fund is the 47th Ward Block Audit. This questionnaire gives you the opportunity to assess the condition of infrastructure on your block and share that with my office. We will be distributing the block audits for the 2016 aldermanic menu program in early November via this newsletter. If your project was not approved this year, but appeared on the $13.75 million worth of projects submitted to my office, we will automatically carry it over for consideration in 2016.

Leaf Reminder
Fall is upon us, and the leaves are once again covering the ground. Please remember not to sweep or blow any leaves into the street. Instead, bag them and place the bags by your garbage carts. The Department of Streets and Sanitation will pick them up on your normal day of service. If you have a large amount of leaves/yard waste from a neighborhood clean-up, please alert my office so we can advise you on the best place to leave the bags for pickup.

Have a great weekend!

Sincerely,
Ameya

Help the Chicago Police Department Fight Crime Anonymously
Chicago residents can now ANONYMOUSLY and SAFELY send text messages to the Chicago Police Department to report crimes they are witnessing from your cell phone to help rid your community of crime with TXT2TIP.
  1.  Create a new text message or sms text on your cellular phone
  2. Enter the number 274637 in the "TO" line
  3. In the message box, type the word CPD, a space, and then your crime tip information
  4. Hit "send" to send the text message
After you have sent the message you will receive a system generated message back on your cell phone acknowledging your tip.  Your identity will not be sent to the Chicago Police Department!

As always if you see a crime in progress or need to report an emergency, you can also call 911.
To make an emergency call in Chicago:
  • A call taker will answer the call and write down the information you provide.
Note: For persons who speak languages other than English, the AT&T Language Line provides interpreters in more than 140 languages.
  • Remain calm-speak slowly and clearly.
  • Explain what type of emergency you are reporting. If the crime is taking place while you are calling, tell the call taker the incident is in progress.
  • The call taker will request your name. However, you do not have to identify yourself when reporting a crime, unless you yourself are the victim of the crime.
  • Give your location, if it is different from the scene of the emergency.
Note: In some instances, you may not want the police to come to your home or otherwise identify you as the person who made the call. Expressly tell the call taker if you do not want the police to come to your home.
  • Give the phone number you are calling from.
  • Stay on the line, while the call taker passes your information to the dispatcher, in case there is additional information or instructions.

Monarch Butterfly- The Symbolic Migration
McPherson 4th graders have been invited to participate in the 20th annual "Symbolic Monarch Butterfly Migration" across North America. Over 60,000 students in the United States and Canada will create symbolic butterflies this fall and send them to Mexico for the winter. At the monarch sanctuaries in Mexico, children will protect the butterflies and send them north in the spring. The symbolic butterflies build bridges of communication between students in Mexico, the United States, and Canada. United by the monarch butterfly, our students will learn authentic lessons of conservation, cooperation, and ambassadorship.

Students have been collaborating to make a butterfly that will travel to Mexico as an ambassador to represent our class. Our butterfly will carry a cluster of life-sized monarchs (one butterfly per student), class photos, and a note from us along with a map.

Next spring, Journey North will mail one class butterfly and one cluster of life-sized monarchs back to our classroom. Our 4th graders are excited for this adventure, journey and celebration!

Friendship Pet Food Pantry (FP2) helps pets stay with their families. In October they gave food for 48 dogs, 84 cats and saw 14 new families! Now FP2 needs your help to keep up with demand!

FP2's priority wish list includes dry cat food and Friskies canned cat food. Drop off cat (and dog) food at Alderman Pawar's 47th Ward Service Office Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., or at the Friendship Center (2733 W. Lawrence Ave.) on Thursdays from 2 to 5 p.m.

In 2016, pet food distribution will shift to the third Saturday of every month, from 9 to 11 a.m. Any one high-school age or older is welcome to volunteer, though a brief training is required. Other volunteer opportunities exist for all ages. Visit FP2's website, www.friendshippetpantry.org to learn more.
Thank you!

Join in the pet parade at noon Saturday from Giddings Plaza to Ruff Haus. Or come out to see the furry faces on parade.

Please join Tree House as they prepare for winter and bring the kids. Drop in to help build feral cat shelters at 2000 W. Carroll on Saturday 10/24 9am-5pm &/or come out to their Winter Sale on Sunday, 10/25 12pm-2pm next door to their Bucktown location in the Manufacturers Bank Parking Lot; NE corner of Ashland & North Ave.

CAPS Meetings! Why should you attend? Learn how to be proactive in preventing crime, have your concerns heard. http://chicago47.org/beat-meetings/

You may attend any CAPS Meeting in your district (south of Lawrence is #19; north of Lawrence is #20).

Friendship Pet Food Pantry would like to give a big THANK YOU! To Bethany United Church of Christ for their generosity. They held a pet food drive and delivered a big box full of food and toys for our clients' pets. Would your church, scout troop, business or block like to help pets in need? It's easy. Just let folks know you're collecting and before you know it, you too will have a full box. Check out the nice folks at Bethany UCC - 4250 N. Paulina; Saturdays at 5pm, Sundays at 10am.

Add them to your compost. Or put them in large garbage bags, keep adding crushed leaves every time you rake, let the air out of the bag and use them next spring for mulch.

FREE, yes FREE, Rain Barrels are available to everyone who wants to disconnect their downspouts. Thanks to the 47th Ward partnership with Metropolitan Water Reclamation District & Chicago Historic Bungalow Association. You may request up to 4 rain barrels! The next helpful step you can take is to plant a rain garden for your overflow; instead of having water in your basement, alley or the street.

Requests for FREE Rain Barrels are coming in. Disconnecting your downspouts has many benefits. Check it out: http://www.rainbarrelguide.com/

There is less open land in our neighborhood, with that comes more water with nowhere to go. Our streets are designed to hold water, then to slowly drain - but with these larger rain events there is more water than our combined system can handle. Does your alley flood? Does storm-water runoff from your garage go into the alley; does it seem that there is more water on your property than ever before?

Talk to your neighbors. Help one another to disconnect gutters. The more houses on your block that use rain barrels the less flooding you'll have.   Please contact Dara@chicago47.org

Safe Cycling Classes
Are you interested in the fun and convenience of bicycling but feel nervous about getting out on 2-wheels? Consider taking the Save Cycling Class, a 3-hour introduction to the basics of riding a bike safely in traffic, offered by the Active Transportation Alliance. Covering the rules of the road for cyclists, handling intersections, commuting tips/tricks, as well as picking out the right bike and basic maintenance, you will spend 1/5 hour in the classroom & 1.5 hours in a practice area before practicing on low-traffic streets. Classes will be held the 2nd Saturday of every month: November 14 & December 12. Click here to see the full course description.

Want to play or learn how to play Mah Jong? Join other like-minded women for a couple hours of bam, crack, east, dot...1pm; 2nd & 4th Friday of the month at Northcenter Senior Center.

Thanks to all of you who donated blankets/towels for the shelters. A car load was taken to PAWS. Please keep them coming.

If you or a neighbor is a shut-in, a Hot Meal is available every Saturday afternoon from the kind volunteers at Pilgrim Lutheran Church; call Janet Taylor 773-777-4052 or Jackie Mokszycki 773-961-8740

Do you garden on a corner or parkway?
Please take a look at the list of upcoming water main projects in the 'infrastructure update' section of the newsletter. You may have to move your plants so they won't be destroyed or disappear.

Please be sure to report any drain that does not clear within 24 hours of rainfall to the 47th Ward Office or 311.

Please bring in your old batteries for recycling. Keep them out of the landfill.

Don't have a use for your old cell phones? Drop them off at the alderman's office. We collect year round for Cell Phones for Soldiers. There couldn't be an easier way to help our soldiers stay in touch with family & friends.

Forward Chicago, a grass-roots, all volunteer, non-profit brings active, involved, engaged folks together. Lawrence Avenue Streetscape

FINAL STAGE: The streetscape project is currently wrapping up, as the contractor only has a few small items to address. If additional concrete removal and replacement is required by the City due to some of the spalling issues, this work will require additional time. A few remaining trees that were damaged will be replaced and a few missing plants will be installed in the infiltration planters. Also, the last section of fence at Claremont Plaza will be installed. Once the project has been approved by the City, the SSAs will assume maintenance and a number of items will remain under warranty.

As always, pay close attention to parking restrictions.

Work on the east side will move faster than on the west side since the track is currently in place there and extensive retaining wall work is not necessary.  The middle track will also be removed as part of this project.
