Dear Neighbor, On Wednesday, I testified before the CTA Board to advocate for the restoration of the #11 Lincoln Bus between Fullerton and the Western Brown Line. My testimony capped months of advocacy at previous board meetings by members of the Crosstown Bus Coalition, a coalition of community stakeholders along Lincoln Avenue on the north side and 31st Street on the south side, working to see these two vital routes restored. I want to thank Senate President John Cullerton, State Senator Heather Steans, State Representative Greg Harris, State Representative Ann Williams, County Commissioner Bridget Gainer, County Commissioner John Fritchey, and Alderman Michele Smith for joining me in signing a letter to CTA President Dorval Carter, Jr. advocating for the restoration of the bus. You can see a photo of the letter on my facebook page. I want to especially thank Alderman Patrick Thompson from the 11th Ward for working with us on this crosstown effort.  I will keep you updated on any progress ahead of the CTA's budget hearings next month. New Water Mains - Damen & Lincoln from Addison to Irving Park Road Next week, contractors working with the Department of Water Management will begin replacing the water mains installed in 1890 under Damen Avenue and Lincoln Avenue from Addison to Irving Park Road. The work will begin on Damen and move to Lincoln once the work on Damen is completed. We expect the project to be completed in December 2015, with full restoration following in the spring. No Parking signs will be posted, where needed in the project area, Monday through Friday from 7am to 4pm. Contractors will do their best to stage the parking restrictions to the greatest extent possible. Damen and Lincoln will remain open to traffic and pedestrians during construction. Help the Chicago Police Department Fight Crime Anonymously
Chicago residents can now ANONYMOUSLY and SAFELY send text messages to the Chicago Police Department to report crimes they are witnessing from your cell phone to help rid your community of crime with TXT2TIP.
- Create a new text message or sms text on your cellular phone
- Enter the number 274637 in the "TO" line
- In the message box, type the word CPD, a space, and then your crime tip information
- Hit "send" to send the text message
After you have sent the message you will receive a system generated message back on your cell phone acknowledging your tip. Your identity will not be sent to the Chicago Police Department!
As always if you see a crime in progress or need to report an emergency, you can also call 911.
To make an emergency call in Chicago:
- A call taker will answer the call and write down the information you provide.
Note: For persons who speak languages other than English, the AT&T Language Line provides interpreters in more than 140 languages. - Remain calm-speak slowly and clearly.
- Explain what type of emergency you are reporting. If the crime is taking place while you are calling, tell the call taker the incident is in progress.
- The call taker will request your name. However, you do not have to identify yourself when reporting a crime, unless you yourself are the victim of the crime.
- Give your location, if it is different from the scene of the emergency.
Note: In some instances, you may not want the police to come to your home or otherwise identify you as the person who made the call. Expressly tell the call taker if you do not want the police to come to your home. - Give the phone number you are calling from.
- Stay on the line, while the call taker passes your information to the dispatcher, in case there is additional information or instructions.

Monarch Butterfly- The Symbolic Migration
McPherson 4th graders have been invited to participate in the 20th annual "Symbolic Monarch Butterfly Migration" across North America. Over 60,000 students in the United States and Canada will create symbolic butterflies this fall and send them to Mexico for the winter. At the monarch sanctuaries in Mexico, children will protect the butterflies and send them north in the spring. The symbolic butterflies build bridges of communication between students in Mexico, the United States, and Canada. United by the monarch butterfly, our students will learn authentic lessons of conservation, cooperation, and ambassadorship.
Students have been collaborating to make a butterfly that will travel to Mexico as an ambassador to represent our class. Our butterfly will carry a cluster of life-sized monarchs (one butterfly per student), class photos, and a note from us along with a map.
Next spring, Journey North will mail one class butterfly and one cluster of life-sized monarchs back to our classroom. Our 4th graders are excited for this adventure, journey and celebration!

The next helpful step you can take is to plant a rain garden for your overflow; instead of having water in your basement, alley or the street. There is less open land in our neighborhood, with that comes more water with nowhere to go. Our streets are designed to hold water, then to slowly drain - but with these larger rain events there is more water than our combined system can handle. Does your alley flood? Does storm-water runoff from your garage go into the alley; does it seem that there is more water on your property than ever before? Talk to your neighbors. Help one another to disconnect gutters. Safe Cycling Classes
Are you interested in the fun and convenience of bicycling but feel nervous about getting out on 2-wheels? Consider taking the Save Cycling Class, a 3-hour introduction to the basics of riding a bike safely in traffic, offered by the Active Transportation Alliance. Covering the rules of the road for cyclists, handling intersections, commuting tips/tricks, as well as picking out the right bike and basic maintenance, you will spend 1/5 hour in the classroom & 1.5 hours in a practice area before practicing on low-traffic streets. 47th Ward Infrastructure Update
Lawrence Avenue Streetscape
FINAL STAGE: The streetscape project is currently wrapping up, as the contractor only has a few small items to address. If additional concrete removal and replacement is required by the City due to some of the spalling issues, this work will require additional time. A few remaining trees that were damaged will be replaced and a few missing plants will be installed in the infiltration planters. Also, the last section of fence at Claremont Plaza will be installed. Once the project has been approved by the City, the SSAs will assume maintenance and a number of items will remain under warranty.
As always, pay close attention to parking restrictions.
Ravenswood Metra Station
- The new station opened in early May (west side, for outbound trains)!
- Metra Phase II: Design and engineering work is currently being performed for improvements to the east side of the tracks and will be put out to bid once complete. Construction of the 11 new bridges and new station (east side, for inbound trains) is expected to start in spring 2016 will last approximately 18 months. Work on the east side will move faster than on the west side since the track is currently in place there and extensive retaining wall work is not necessary. The middle track will also be removed as part of this project.
Water Main Replacement Damen & Lincoln from Addison to Irving Park
Contractors working with the Department of Water Management are replacing the water mains from 1890 under Damen & Lincoln from Addison to Irving Park. Work will begin late next week. Where needed, Parking will be restricted M-F 7am to 4pm and restrictions will be staged to the greatest extent possible. For more information on this project, please click here. Water Main Replacement Oakley from Addison to Cornelia, Claremont from Addison to School, and Roscoe from Western to Leavitt Crews from the Department of Water Management are replacing the water mains from 1889 under Oakley from Addison to Cornelia, Claremont from Addison to School and Roscoe from Western to Leavitt. No parking will be necessary from 7am to 4pm. After the project is sawcut and milled, no parking will be staged to the greatest extent possible.
