Dear Neighbor, The construction of new playgrounds at Welles Park (2333 W. Sunnyside) and Vogle Playlot Park (2100 W. Lawrence) began this week. Both parks are expected to be completed this Winter. Conceptual drawings for both playgrounds can be found below. I want to thank the Chicago Park District, Mayor Emanuel, the Welles Park Advisory Council, and Friends of the Parks for partnering with my office to advance both playground projects. The next big project is the addition of a new turf field at Chase Park! Construction on the new field is slated to begin in the Spring of 2016. Hamilton School In late September, we cut the ribbon on a new playground at Hamilton School (1650 W. Cornelia). This project was financed through fundraising by the Hamilton Action Team and with 47th Ward Aldermanic Menu funds. Congratulations to Principal Gray and the entire Hamilton community! Public Safety UpdateThis week, I was troubled to receive reports of robberies in the southeastern portion of the 47th Ward. My office has been in close communication with the 19th District about these crimes, and we have requested special attention for the affected areas. I am pleased to report that two suspects are in custody for two of the strong-arm robberies reported earlier in the week. These arrests are the result of tremendous work by the Chicago Police Department. I want to thank all of the officers who contributed to these arrests and thank those who took the time to report information to police. As always, please call 911 when you see any suspicious or criminal activity in the neighborhood. You can review street safety tips and other public safety resources on chicago47.org. Each month, Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy holds an award ceremony to recognize police officers and civilians for working together to combat crime and keep our neighborhoods safe. I am proud that Sgt. Norman Kwong and 47th Ward Chief of Staff Jim Poole received the Problem Solving Award for their work in closing down Fantasea Lounge. Read more about Fantasea here.

CAPS Meetings! Why should you attend? Learn how to be proactive in preventing crime, have your concerns heard. http://chicago47.org/beat-meetings/
You may attend any CAPS Meeting in your district (south of Lawrence is #19; north of Lawrence is #20).
Friendship Pet Food Pantry would like to give a big THANK YOU! To Bethany United Church of Christ for their generosity. They held a pet food drive and delivered a big box full of food and toys for our clients' pets. Would your church, scout troop, business or block like to help pets in need? It's easy. Just let folks know you're collecting and before you know it, you too will have a full box. Check out the nice folks at Bethany UCC - 4250 N. Paulina; Saturdays at 5pm, Sundays at 10am. The kind folks at Duke Recycling have joined us for many years taking away thousands of pounds of our unwanted old papers, electronics, metal and really anything with a plug. This year they are standing up to cancer by donating 50% of profits for all materials recycled in their Pink Gondola during the month of October. That's why it is even more important to make our October 17 recycling event a bigger success than ever. Please tell your friends & neighbors - this is a great time to recycle paper, metal, electronics and also clear out unwanted books and bicycles for donation to Open Books and Working Bikes and help fight cancer. https://www.facebook.com/bldukechicago As anyone who has been in our office can tell you, this summer our walls have been without art. Join us on Saturday, October 17, 6-10pm for the Opening Reception of a new Open Wall Exhibit in conjunction with Chicago Artists Month by a group of C3 artists. My City, Your City: An Art Mashup.

Add them to your compost. Or put them in large garbage bags, keep adding crushed leaves every time you rake, let the air out of the bag and use them next spring for mulch. FREE, yes FREE, Rain Barrels are available to everyone who wants to disconnect their downspouts. Thanks to the 47th Ward partnership with Metropolitan Water Reclamation District & Chicago Historic Bungalow Association. You may request up to 4 rain barrels! The next helpful step you can take is to plant a rain garden for your overflow; instead of having water in your basement, alley or the street. There is less open land in our neighborhood, with that comes more water with nowhere to go. Our streets are designed to hold water, then to slowly drain - but with these larger rain events there is more water than our combined system can handle. Does your alley flood? Does storm-water runoff from your garage go into the alley; does it seem that there is more water on your property than ever before? Talk to your neighbors. Help one another to disconnect gutters. The more houses on your block that use rain barrels the less flooding you'll have. Please contact Dara@chicago47.org

47th Ward Infrastructure Update
Lawrence Avenue Streetscape
FINAL STAGE: The streetscape project is currently wrapping up, as the contractor only has a few small items to address. A few remaining trees that were damaged will be replaced and a few missing plants will be installed in the infiltration planters. Also, the last section of fence at Claremont Plaza will be installed. Once the project has been approved by the City, the SSAs will assume maintenance and a number of items will remain under warranty.
As always, pay close attention to parking restrictions.
