Dear Neighbor, The Chicago Transit Authority will be doing track work along the Brown Line in the 47th and 33rd Wards this weekend to improve the quality of the service in the area. This work will interrupt train service on the Brown Line between the Western and Kimball stations. The Kimball, Kedzie, Francisco, and Rockwell stations will be closed, and normal rail service will be interrupted, from 3am on Saturday, October 3rd until 4am on Monday, October 5th. Shuttle bus service will replace the normal rail service between the Kimball and Western stations during this time. Additionally, Rockwell will be closed to traffic between Leland and Eastwood from 3am to 3pm on Sunday, October 4th. Apple Fest The Lincoln Square Ravenswood Chamber of Commerce hosts their 28th annual Apple Fest tomorrow, October 3rd from 9am to 5pm along Lincoln Avenue from Leland to Lawrence. This wonderful neighborhood tradition is the official welcome ceremony for fall and features a kids zone and lots of vendors. More information can be found on their website. St. Benedict Oktoberfest This year marks the 50th Oktoberfest at St. Benedict Parish & School at 2215 W. Irving Park Road. This fall tradition is a celebration of our community's German Roots. Oktoberfest starts today from 3pm to 10pm, Saturday from 1pm to 10pm, and Sunday from 3pm to 9pm. More information can be found on their website. Lakeview Sunday Spot The Lakeview Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring three Sunday Spot programs over the next three Sundays at Lincoln & Paulina. This week is the Sunday Art Spot. Northcenter Restaurantour 2015
Chicagoans may know Northcenter as the home of food-fest favorite Ribfest Chicago, but when it comes to food, this neighborhood is a hidden gem even when all the rib bones have been plucked dry. From Italian to Colombian, from pub grub to Peruvian, this little community at the heart of the North Side has something for everyone. And for the past five years, the Northcenter Chamber of Commerce has sought to showcase the diverse and delicious food offerings of this neighborhood through its annual restaurant crawl, RestauranTOUR, whose 2015 edition takes place Wednesday, October 14th from 5 - 9 p.m.
Twenty local restaurants in the Northcenter neighborhood are participating this year, each offering a bite-sized sample of an appetizer, entrée, dessert or drink for hungry guests. Among the hot new restaurant additions for 2015 are recent neighborhood additions Via Lima (4024 N. Lincoln), which offers fresh takes on Peruvian staples; Dos Ricco's (4064 N. Lincoln), an Asian-Mexican spot offering Thai chicken wings; new Mediterranean favorite Zaytune (4322 N. Western) and Beard & Belly (1612 W. Irving Park), part of The Long Room's Sidecar colorful culinary cast.
New this year is Grace & Leavitt Fire Escape (2157 W. Grace Street), a longtime neighborhood favorite hosting the post-9 p.m. afterparty. They joining trendy local spots like Fountainhead, ARTango Bistro and Mrs. Murphy & Sons Irish Bistro, as well as neighborhood institutions like O'Donovan's, The Piggery and Melao.
RestauranTOUR 2015 passes are now available on the Northcenter Chamber of Commerce website and will be available at the door the night of the event. Passes are $20 individual, $25 at the door or $75 for a group of four. Passports can be picked up at the Chamber office, 4054 N. Lincoln Avenue, the week of the event and at the door. Help the Chicago Police Department Fight Crime Anonymously
Chicago residents can now ANONYMOUSLY and SAFELY send text messages to the Chicago Police Department to report crimes they are witnessing from your cell phone to help rid your community of crime with TXT2TIP.
- Create a new text message or sms text on your cellular phone
- Enter the number 274637 in the "TO" line
- In the message box, type the word CPD, a space, and then your crime tip information
- Hit "send" to send the text message
After you have sent the message you will receive a system generated message back on your cell phone acknowledging your tip. Your identity will not be sent to the Chicago Police Department!
As always if you see a crime in progress or need to report an emergency, you can also call 911.
To make an emergency call in Chicago:
- A call taker will answer the call and write down the information you provide.
Note: For persons who speak languages other than English, the AT&T Language Line provides interpreters in more than 140 languages. - Remain calm-speak slowly and clearly.
- Explain what type of emergency you are reporting. If the crime is taking place while you are calling, tell the call taker the incident is in progress.
- The call taker will request your name. However, you do not have to identify yourself when reporting a crime, unless you yourself are the victim of the crime.
- Give your location, if it is different from the scene of the emergency.
Note: In some instances, you may not want the police to come to your home or otherwise identify you as the person who made the call. Expressly tell the call taker if you do not want the police to come to your home. - Give the phone number you are calling from.
- Stay on the line, while the call taker passes your information to the dispatcher, in case there is additional information or instructions.

Thanks to the 47th Ward partnership with Metropolitan Water Reclamation District & Chicago Historic Bungalow Association. You may request up to 4 rain barrels! The next helpful step you can take is to plant a rain garden for your overflow; instead of having water in your basement, alley or the street. There is less open land in our neighborhood, with that comes more water with nowhere to go. Our streets are designed to hold water, then to slowly drain - but with these larger rain events there is more water than our combined system can handle. Does your alley flood? Does storm-water runoff from your garage go into the alley; does it seem that there is more water on your property than ever before? Talk to your neighbors. Help one another to disconnect gutters. The more houses on your block that use rain barrels the less flooding you'll have. Safe Cycling Classes
Are you interested in the fun and convenience of bicycling but feel nervous about getting out on 2-wheels? Consider taking the Save Cycling Class, a 3-hour introduction to the basics of riding a bike safely in traffic, offered by the Active Transportation Alliance. Covering the rules of the road for cyclists, handling intersections, commuting tips/tricks, as well as picking out the right bike and basic maintenance, you will spend 1/5 hour in the classroom & 1.5 hours in a practice area before practicing on low-traffic streets. 47th Ward Infrastructure Update
Lawrence Avenue Streetscape
FINAL STAGE: The streetscape project is currently wrapping up, as the contractor only has a few small items to address. If additional concrete removal and replacement is required by the City due to some of the spalling issues, this work will require additional time. A few remaining trees that were damaged will be replaced and a few missing plants will be installed in the infiltration planters. Also, the last section of fence at Claremont Plaza will be installed. Once the project has been approved by the City, the SSAs will assume maintenance and a number of items will remain under warranty.
As always, pay close attention to parking restrictions.
Ravenswood Metra Station
- The new station opened in early May (west side, for outbound trains)!
- Metra Phase II: Design and engineering work is currently being performed for improvements to the east side of the tracks and will be put out to bid once complete. Construction of the 11 new bridges and new station (east side, for inbound trains) is expected to start in spring 2016 will last approximately 18 months. Work on the east side will move faster than on the west side since the track is currently in place there and extensive retaining wall work is not necessary. The middle track will also be removed as part of this project.
Water Main Replacement Damen from Irving Park to Montrose, Cullom from Lincoln to Damen and Pensacola from Lincoln to Damen
Contractors working with the Department of Water Management are replacing the water mains from 1891 under Damen from Irving Park to Montrose, Cullom from Lincoln to Damen and Pensacola from Lincoln to Damen. Contractors have capped all of the trenches and the replacement is complete. Restoration of curbs, street surface and landscaping will occur in the coming weeks. Where needed, Parking will be restricted M-F 7am to 4pm and restrictions will be staged to the greatest extent possible. For more information on this project, please click here. Water Main Replacement Oakley from Addison to Cornelia, Claremont from Addison to School, and Roscoe from Western to Leavitt Crews from the Department of Water Management are replacing the water mains from 1889 under Oakley from Addison to Cornelia, Claremont from Addison to School and Roscoe from Western to Leavitt. No parking will be necessary from 7am to 4pm. After the project is sawcut and milled, no parking will be staged to the greatest extent possible. Sewer Main Replacement for Wolcott from Lawrence to Winnemac
