Dear Neighbor,
On Tuesday, June 30, 2015, a 20 year old woman was stabbed to death and three individuals were wounded during an altercation in the alley on the 2100 block between West Sunnyside and West Windsor. The altercation stemmed from a dispute which began on Facebook between these young adults. The incident was domestic in nature and no one was randomly targeted. The investigation is still pending and we will update you as it progresses. All the people involved have been identified and questioned by the Chicago Police Department, and the 19th District is putting special attention in the area. It is heartbreaking and tragic to see a Facebook dispute result in a death. Some of the media attention on Tuesday's tragic events have focused on the fact the altercation took place in our community instead of the tragic loss of life. And while the event was shocking, frightening, and sad, our community has focused the conversation in the right place; neighbors are calling and asking how to support programs and services which provide our young people with the tools to deal with conflict, provide summer jobs and internships, etc. This is where we should focus our attention. We need to invest more in all of Chicago's youth. So much of the crime we read and hear about is preventable. And so much of it stems from minor conflict. I hope you will join me and support some of the incredible youth-oriented organizations in our City (see below). Alternatives, Inc. The Night Ministry Thresholds After School MattersNeighborhood Boys & Girls Club Youth Guidance My political action committee, the Friends of Ameya Pawar, will be making a contribution to each one of these organizations. Please consider supporting one of these organizations, or one of the many others doing vitally important work in Chicago. In sum, Tuesday's tragedy should have never happened. A dispute on social media should never escalate into violence and we as a city and community should support organizations working to reduce youth violence. My condolences to the family and friends of the woman and to all the lives impacted by Tuesday's events. Chicago Police were on the scene within minutes and many neighbors provided eyewitness accounts that were incredibly helpful in identifying this group of people. Thanks to the Chicago Police Department, and all of the neighbors who supported one another and the police during this investigation. Remember to always call 911 if you see any suspicious or criminal activity in the neighborhood. Be safe this holiday weekend. Sincerely,
|
