June 26, 2015

On this day in 1948, U.S. and British pilots begin delivering food and supplies by airplane to Berlin after the city is isolated by a Soviet Union blockade.

The 47th Ward Office will be CLOSED on Friday, July 3rd in observance of Independence Day

Dear Neighbor,

In March of 2015, Mayor Emanuel announced the creation of a Working Families Task Force (WFTF)-- the task force would be charged with developing a set of recommendations around paid sick leave, paid family leave, and scheduling protections for hourly/shift employees. And today, I am honored to inform you that I am co-chairing the task force with Anne Ladky, the CEO Of Women Employed! We convened the task force for the first time last Friday and we will be working this summer to develop a set of recommendations for Mayor Emanuel's review. The task force is made up of elected officials (state and city), businesses, labor, advocacy organizations, and academics. The goal is to work with all stakeholders to develop a set of balanced proposals for the Mayor Emanuel's review.

Mayor Emanuel has asked the task force to provide recommendations on the following:
  • Possible actions on paid sick leave
  • Possible actions to afford scheduling protections to shift and hourly employees
  • Possible actions to extend paid family leave to new parents
I am honored to co-chair this task force and build on the work of the Minimum Wage Working Group (MWWG). I was a proud member of the MWWG -- we spent the bulk of the summer of 2014 developing a recommendation to increase Chicago's minimum wage. The MWWG submitted their report to Mayor Emanuel in September of 2014.  The report called for a $13/hr Chicago minimum wage. That recommendation passed City Council in December of 2014. As a result, the minimum wage in Chicago is set to increase on July 1, 2015, from $8.25/hr to $10/hr. The minimum wage will increase to $13/hr by 2019 and then index to inflation starting in 2020. As you know, increasing the minimum wage was a critical step towards reducing social vulnerability in Chicago. Developing recommendations for a paid sick leave policy, creating protections for hourly/shift workers, and finding ways to extend paid family leave to new parents are critical next steps to support tens of thousands of working families across the city.

Over the next few months, I am going to work with Ms. Ladky and task force members to develop a set of recommendations to provide Mayor Emanuel. Some recommendations may call for legislative action in Sprinfield while others will be best handled by City Council. Along the way, we will hold public hearings and solicit input from the public to help guide and inform our final recommendations.

As always, I will keep you informed of our work. For more information about the effort and to see the composition of the group, please click here.

It is so ordered.
The Supreme Court of the United States was very busy this week. The court affirmed the Affordable Care Act and strengthened the Fair Housing Act. These decisions will have a cascade of positive impacts on millions of Americans. Today, I am thrilled that the Supreme Court ordered marriage equality the law of the land. There are many things I want to say, but no one put it better than Justice Kennedy in the last paragraph of the majority opinion (see below) of the Supreme Court. #micdrop

Have a great weekend!

Sincerely,
Ameya

Lawrence Avenue Streetscape

  • Landscaping work will be performed along the rest of the project and is scheduled to be completed by June 30th. Sod will be installed in late June since the supplier has been unable to cut it due to all of the recent rain. As always, please pay close attention to parking restrictions as crews will need to access these areas.
  • There have been some issues with sidewalks and curbs/gutters spalling and the contractor will be removing and replacing a number of sections along the corridor. We will provide additional information on replacement timelines when they become available. This additional concrete work will extend the final project completion timeline.
  • New stamped asphalt is expected to be installed to connect Claremont Plaza to Giddings Plaza during the week of July 6th. In Claremont Plaza, the brick pavers were adjusted and additional work will include a new fence to shield the dumpsters.
