May 15, 2015

On this day in 1800, President John Adams orders the federal government to pack up and leave Philadelphia and set up shop in the nation's new capital in Washington, D.C.

The 47th Ward Office will be CLOSED on Friday, May 22 and Monday, May 25.

Dear Neighbor,

On May 9, 2015, North Center, and the entire 47th Ward, lost a tremendous community leader. Garrett FitzGerald lost his battle with brain cancer after fighting bravely in the face of this terrible disease. Garrett served as the Executive Director of the Northcenter Chamber of Commerce and the Chief Executive Officer of the Northwest Community Corporation. Garrett was a champion for our local shopping districts and economic development, and his leadership will be sorely missed. Under his watch, Northcenter Chamber membership grew from 23 members to nearly 400. He was the driving force behind the growth of Ribfest, and worked tirelessly to market and highlight Northcenter as one of Chicago's premiere neighborhoods.

Garrett (second from the right) at the 2013 Ribfest.

Garrett was a fixture in the 47th Ward having worked for both Ald. Eugene Schulter and County Commissioner Forrest Claypool before beginning his work at the chamber. Garrett served on the Illinois Civil Service Commission since 2011. He is also a past Treasurer and Chairman of the Board of Directors at Neumann Family Services. As a champion for local education, Garrett served on the Bell Local School Council and on the St. Benedict School Board of Directors. He also gave his time to be the 4th Congressional District's Representative on the Citizens' Utility Board.

It was an honor to call Garrett my friend. He reached out to me shortly after my win in 2011. He provided insight and counsel and we became fast friends. Over the last two years, Garrett was an inspiration and I am going to miss him very much. Especially his gregarious spirit and passion for life. He is survived by his wife, Alicia, and daughter, Bridget. On behalf of the entire 47th Ward, I want to send heartfelt condolences to Garrett's family during this time.

The visitation for Garrett is open to the public and will be held today from 3-9 p.m. at Grein Funeral Directors, 2114 W. Irving Park Rd. A funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Benedict's Church, 2215 W. Irving Park Rd. In lieu of flowers or memorials, the family asks that you donate in Garrett's honor to: Voices Against Brain Cancer at voicesagainstbraincancer.org or Neumann Family Services at neumannfamilyservices.org.

I will be introducing a resolution to City Council, on behalf of the 47th Ward and in partnership with the Northcenter Chamber, honoring Garrett's exceptional accomplishments and renaming Belle Plaine from Damen to Lincoln in his honor.

Inaugural Day of Service
In honor of the new City Council being sworn in on Monday, May 18th. Mayor Emanuel is hosting days of service throughout every ward in Chicago tomorrow, May 16th. The 47th Ward volunteer event will be held at the Montrose Metra Community Garden from 7:30am to 11am. If you would like to help weed garden beds, clean up in the area, and work on plantings meet Dara between Montrose and Berteau on the west side of Ravenswood. More information, including info on other sites, can be found on  www.cic2015.org.

Sincerely,
Ameya

Don't Get Scammed. BEWARE of Utility Impersonators
Advisory Message from ComED

ComEd has seen an increase in reports of individuals calling ComEd customers and falsely claiming their electric service will be disconnected unless payment is made. These impersonators instruct customers to buy a prepaid credit card and call back to a different phone number with the personal identification number (PIN) or other personal information. They also use a tactic called "Caller ID spoofing" too manipulate the displayed phone number so that it appears as a ComEd number.

Remember: ComEd representatives will never call you to ask you for cash or request that you purchase a prepaid credit card to make a payment on your bill. If you have concerns about the status of your account, call ComEd's Customer Service line at 800-334-7661(800-EDISON1).

If you believe you have been the target of a phone scam, ComEd urges you to contact the Illinois Attorney General's office at 800-386-5438 (TTY 800-964-3013), or visit illinoisattorneygeneral.gov and click on the "Protecting Consumers" link. Click here to learn more.

There's a NEW Garden in Town - Montrose Metra Community Gardens

A new community garden space is taking shape along the Metra tracks on the west side of Ravenswood
Avenue, between Montrose and Berteau: the Montrose Metra Community Gardens!

The space has been prepared by a group of your neighbors and community groups with a desire to make
our area a little healthier and more beautiful through hands-on engagement and urban gardening. Our
mission is to create a vibrant green community space that connects neighbors and fosters a healthy and
sustainable environment in the local area. The beds are built, the trees are planted and fences installed.
Now we need donations and gardeners!

This new green space includes a community food garden with 46 plots, each measuring 4x8 ft:

  • (6) plots for volunteers that will benefit local pantries and charities
  • (10) plots available for local businesses and organizations (with a $150 donation for the year)
  • (30) plots available to individuals in the community (with a $75 donation for the year)

These plots will be assigned to the first 30 residents who donate $75 and to the first 10
businesses/organizations that donate $150 starting at 12 Noon on Monday, May 4. Eligible residents and
organizations must have an address in the official city boundaries of Ravenswood, North Center or
Lincoln Square.

To donate and earn the chance to rent a plot, follow these instructions:

  • Go to our donation page on NeighborSpace on or after May 4 at 12 Noon
  • Choose an individual or business/organization plot donation by clicking the associated button
  • Complete the donation with all required details
IMPORTANT NOTE: We strongly suggest you walk over to the garden to see the space before deciding to

try for a plot. There are steep slopes and unlevel ground that may be difficult for some individuals or
families.

If you don't want a plot but want to help this project, please consider a donation of $20, $50, $100 or
any other amount. We will be extremely thankful!

Thousands of community members from the 5 county area came together on Tuesday for the Chicago Community Trust's On the Table initiative. This is their 2nd year and Forward Chicago & 47th Ward Senior Council has hosted dinners both times. It is important the CCT hears directly from the community what folks think about their specific topic. This year the discussion was about Philanthropy. What is your definition of that word?

Do you practice your definition of philanthropy: if so, how, where, are you involved enough? How do you feel when you practice philanthropy? "I can give $25-$35 to a worthy cause that I believe in." But when I give my time - that's when I'm really committed." Karen Kolb co-founder, Forward Chicago.
