May 7, 2015

On this day in 1915, the British ocean liner Lusitania is torpedoed without warning by a German submarine off the south coast of Ireland.

Dear Neighbor,

I am happy to announce that the outbound Metra station on the west side of Ravenswood will open for its first rush hour on Monday morning. The opening of the new station is the final step in phase one of Union Pacific and Metra's, bridge and station upgrade project along the west side of Ravenswood Avenue. Congressman Quigley and the 47th Ward Team took a tour of the new station yesterday.

The next phase in this project will be the installation of new bridges, track and station on the east side of Ravenswood. This work will begin in 2016. I want to thank Congressman Quigley, Union Pacific, Metra, and Walsh Construction for their work to make these improvements a reality. A special thank you to all the businesses and residents who endured this needed work with great patience. This is a critical piece of infrastructure for our ward and a wonderful addition to #ANewLawrence.

Montrose Metra Community Gardens
As part of the Metra and Union Pacific improvement project, community gardens and vegetable plots were created along the embankment on the west side of Ravenswood between Montrose and Berteau. The  Montrose Metra Community Gardens are being organized by a committed group of volunteers. Just this week they planted 10 new fruit trees, donated by Openlands, in the garden.
We'll include another picture of the plots once they're planted and teeming with vegetables!

Plots are still available for anyone who would like some space to garden this year. Volunteers are still needed to tend vegetable plots that will benefit our local food pantries. For full information visit their facebook page or see the article in this week's newsletter.

New Divvy Stations
Divvy is adding 176 stations across Chicago, and a several more are coming to the 47th Ward. The locations are listed below. For more information on the Divvy program, please click here.
  • Rockwell & Eastwood (installed this week)
  • Addison & Rockwell (installed this week)

  • Campbell & Montrose (coming soon)

Sincerely,
Ameya

Don't Get Scammed. BEWARE of Utility Impersonators
Advisory Message from ComED

ComEd has seen an increase in reports of individuals calling ComEd customers and falsely claiming their electric service will be disconnected unless payment is made. These impersonators instruct customers to buy a prepaid credit card and call back to a different phone number with the personal identification number (PIN) or other personal information. They also use a tactic called "Caller ID spoofing" too manipulate the displayed phone number so that it appears as a ComEd number.

Remember: ComEd representatives will never call you to ask you for cash or request that you purchase a prepaid credit card to make a payment on your bill. If you have concerns about the status of your account, call ComEd's Customer Service line at 800-334-7661(800-EDISON1).

If you believe you have been the target of a phone scam, ComEd urges you to contact the Illinois Attorney General's office at 800-386-5438 (TTY 800-964-3013), or visit illinoisattorneygeneral.gov and click on the "Protecting Consumers" link. Click here to learn more.

Welcome New Business: Trugurt, 3308 N. Western Avenue

There's a NEW Garden in Town - Montrose Metra Community Gardens

A new community garden space is taking shape along the Metra tracks on the west side of Ravenswood
Avenue, between Montrose and Berteau: the Montrose Metra Community Gardens!

The space has been prepared by a group of your neighbors and community groups with a desire to make
our area a little healthier and more beautiful through hands-on engagement and urban gardening. Our
mission is to create a vibrant green community space that connects neighbors and fosters a healthy and
sustainable environment in the local area. The beds are built, the trees are planted and fences installed.
Now we need donations and gardeners!

This new green space includes a community food garden with 46 plots, each measuring 4x8 ft:

  • (6) plots for volunteers that will benefit local pantries and charities
  • (10) plots available for local businesses and organizations (with a $150 donation for the year)
  • (30) plots available to individuals in the community (with a $75 donation for the year)

These plots will be assigned to the first 30 residents who donate $75 and to the first 10
businesses/organizations that donate $150 starting at 12 Noon on Monday, May 4. Eligible residents and
organizations must have an address in the official city boundaries of Ravenswood, North Center or
Lincoln Square.

To donate and earn the chance to rent a plot, follow these instructions:

  • Go to our donation page on NeighborSpace on or after May 4 at 12 Noon
  • Choose an individual or business/organization plot donation by clicking the associated button
  • Complete the donation with all required details

A donation does not guarantee a plot in the garden as there is limited space. Notifications will be sent
on May 6 to update donors on if a plot was won or if they were added to the wait list. In either case, all
donations will be used to help beautify the space. We are not able to provide refunds.

IMPORTANT NOTE: We strongly suggest you walk over to the garden to see the space before deciding to
try for a plot. There are steep slopes and unlevel ground that may be difficult for some individuals or
families.

If you don't want a plot but want to help this project, please consider a donation of $20, $50, $100 or
any other amount. We will be extremely thankful!

Lakeview Housing & Transportation Trends Show Need for Transit-Oriented Development (TOD)

The Lakeview Chamber of Commerce and Center for Neighborhood Technology have released a white paper analyzing Lakeview housing and transportation data and demonstrating the need for additional transit-oriented development (TOD) in Lakeview: click here to view the white paper.

Of Lakeview's eight CTA stations, five now have fewer housing units within a half mile -- or 10-minute walk -- than they had in 2000. Several development projects currently in the works are leveraging Chicago's new TOD policy that could enable the neighborhood to add households that will help support local businesses.

Lake View High School

 From LVHS Partners:
A huge thanks for the recent support and to the army of volunteers that tackled a major prep and painting project at Lake View HS on April 24th and 25th.

First, many people braved the nasty weather on Friday night to help prep the areas for the painting crew. Then on Saturday, 175 people from Comcast, NBC, students, and LVHS Partners showed up ready to work. We were thrilled! We were able to paint the entire 2nd and 3rd floor hallways along with the basement. It looks fantastic.

Take a moment to check out the album on our LVHS Partners Facebook page - you might recognize a face or two!

As always, a big thanks to Principal Grens and his flock of students for helping make the school a better place for the entire community.

Together we are having such a positive impact on our neighborhood school, let's keep the momentum going. Thanks again, we couldn't do it without you.

------------------------------------------------------------------
On Thursday, May 14th at 6pm in the social room at LVHS, the Graceland West Community Association will host Principal Scott Grens who will discuss progress made at LVHS over the last year and next steps.
