April 17, 2015

On this day in 1975, the Cambodian Civil War  ended .

Dear Neighbor,

On Monday, I had the honor of celebrating the installation of a new mural on the outside east-facing wall of the Welles Park gymnasium (2333 W. Sunnyside Avenue). The mural was created by through a partnership between national cancer centers and advocacy groups, and Lilly Oncology's Hope Murals Project which strives to encourage people and communities to stand together, and make a tribute to those whose lives have been touched by cancer. To commemorate the 10th anniversary of Lily Oncology On Canvas, the Hope Mural Project is bringing 10 murals to 10 cities across the U.S. and Puerto Rico, including the one for Chicago just installed in the 47th Ward.

The mural is entitled "Creating a New Universe" and coincidently the mural designer lives right here in our neighborhood. Watch this video on the painting of the mural here.

It took a collaborative effort to make this inspirational work of art, The Chicago Mural, possible for placement in the ward and at Welles Park. The idea was proposed to Dara in our office by neighbor Liz Mouse. Becky Kliber, the Superintendent of Welles Park, and the Committee for Park Enhancement, shepherded the request for installation through the Chicago Park District. Others involved in the project were BigCar.org (for volunteer service), Lilly Oncology, Oncology Professionals, Gilda's Club and the American Cancer Society.

We are thankful to everyone involved in this program, especially for their commitment to supporting cancer survivors, their families and caretakers. So many lives have been touched by this terrible disease, and it is an honor for us to help find them a place in Welles Park. I hope when you see The Chicago Mural you will be as moved by it as I was.

Sincerely,
Ameya
