April 2, 2015

On this day in 1805, Hans Christian Andersen is born.

The 47th Ward Office will be CLOSED, Friday, April 3rd.

Dear Neighbor,

The Jumping Jack form for summer block parties is now available on the 47th Ward website. You can fax or email the form directly to the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events to get your block in the lottery for a jumping jack for your block party. The fax number and email address can be found on the form.

If you haven't submitted the application for your summer block party, I encourage you to do so. Applications are coming into the 47th Ward Office every day, and it won't be long before dates become unavailable. You can download the application packet from chicago47.org or simply come into the 47th Ward Office to fill out the paperwork. Please remember that there must be two contacts from two different addresses for your application.

If you are trying to organize your first block party, you will also need to submit a petition to our office. Block parties are a great way to get to know your neighbors. I hope that those of you who haven't organized a block party before will consider doing so this year.

If you have any questions about organizing a block party, please contact my office.

Street Sweeping

The schedule for 2015 street sweeping has been released by the Dept. of Streets and Sanitation through the middle of May. Through May 15th, sweeping will continue under the old ward boundary schedule. Once the new council takes office in May, the street sweeping sections and schedule will switch to the new boundaries. We have updated our interactive street sweeping map at chicago47.org through May 15th.  Sweeping begins April 1st so be on the lookout for 'no parking' signs.  Arterial sweeping also begins April 1st and that schedule can be found here.  We will update the dates and new ward map schedule once we receive them from the Department of Streets and Sanitation.

2015 Aldermanic Menu Vote

Voting for the 2015 aldermanic menu continues, and you can vote on projects by clicking here. To take a look at the projects before logging on to vote, please click here. Voting has been EXTENDED until 5pm on Friday, April 10th. While you and your neighbors are considering which projects to support, the 47th Ward Team is traveling throughout the ward to survey all of our alleys, streets, sidewalks and other public infrastructure. I will use all of this data to finalize the list of projects that will be submitted to the City for this year's menu.

Your input is vitally important as we determine which projects to fund with our limited budget. I hope that you will take the time to vote and please urge your neighbors to do so as well. If you have any questions, please contact my office.

Sincerely,
Ameya

St. Matthias School

You can help pave the way to outdoor learning at the school by purchasing an engraved paver brick for the new walkway

St. Matthias School's Garden Committee is pleased to announce that a new brick walkway has been installed on the Ainslie side of the building. Approximately 800 4" x 8" clay pavers comprise a safer, better-looking walkway that will serve as the centerpiece of the Sprouts Garden project.

Any resident or business owner in the ward can make a valuable and enduring contribution to the Sprouts Garden by purchasing an engraved paver during this season of giving. Your contribution is entirely tax-deductible. Pavers are available for $100 (4" x 8 ") or $225 (8" x 8"). A limited number of $500 legacy pavers (8" x 16") are available, as well. The online purchase process is simple:

  1. Open www.stmatthiasschool.org
  2. Click 'Parent Center'
  3. Click 'Sprouts Garden Brick Pavers' and select your preferred paver size.

The available characters for an engraved message varies by paver size: up to 39 characters (4" x 8 "), up to 78 characters (8" x 8") and up to 156 characters (8" x 16"). We invite you to order before year-end to help us pave the way to a new outdoor, experiential learning space for our students beginning in spring 2015!

The Sprouts Garden is a self-funded project collaboration between parent volunteers and teachers who aspire to build and cultivate an engaging outdoor learning & exploration space for the students of St. Matthias School. If you have an idea to share, a garden resource to donate or you wish to purchase an engraved paver for the new walkway, then please let us know:
