On this day in 1942, Lt. Edward O'Hare takes off from the aircraft carrier Lexington in a raid against the Japanese position at Rabaul - and minutes later becomes America's first flying ace in World War II.

This was a great week for the City of Chicago and for the entire Pullman community. After decades of advocacy and countless hours of work, President Obama designated the Pullman neighborhood a National Monument on February 19, 2015! I had the honor and privilege of attending yesterday's designation ceremony -- the designation marks the first National Park Service site located in Chicago!

I hope you will visit Pullman and consider donating to the park as the National Park Service and local foundations begin the process of restoring buildings and developing exhibits. Learn more about Pullman by clicking here.

I want to congratulate Mayor Rahm Emanuel, Congresswoman Robin Kelly, Ald. Anthony Beale, and the entire Pullman community. Great things happen when communities organize, rally, and partner with government. I also want to thank President Barack Obama for using his executive authority to expand the National Park Service to include the Pullman neighborhood.

My wife and I are huge National Park Service fans. We try at least one park each year and now we have a National Park Service monument in Chicago! The Pullman designation will have a catalytic effect on economic development on Chicago's South Side - and we can't wait to support local efforts to invest in the Pullman neighborhood.

2015 Election

The last day to vote early in the 2015 Municipal Election is tomorrow, Saturday, February 21st. You can vote early in the 47th Ward at Welles Park (2333 W. Sunnyside) from 9am to 5pm. Every ward in the City of Chicago has an early voting site - and during early voting, registered voters can vote at any site in the City of Chicago. The Cook County Assessor's Office has released property tax exemption applications for tax year 2014 (for tax bills payable for 2015). This month - the Assessor's Office has made available the homeowner, senior and senior freeze exemption applications. The Long-Time Occupant Exemption Application is to be released in February 2015 by the Assessor's Office. 2015 Block Party Applications

Did you know our community is home to approximately 200 block parties every year? Dates fill up fast so get your applications in ASAP! While summer may feel like a far off dream right now, I encourage you to fill out the 2015 Block Party Application. The Jumping Jack form for 2015 will be available later this spring. We will add the forms to the application packet and give notice of that in our newsletter when the form becomes available.

If your block hasn't held a block party before, 2015 is your year! To hold a block party for the first time all you need to do is circulate a petition amongst your neighbors acknowledging their support for the event; then submit the petition along with your application packet.

Openwall Reception, February 22, for New Exhibit

Our office's latest art exhibit, 1 + 1 = Community 2015, features the artwork of OpenWall committee members (the first 1) plus one artist of their choice (the second 1) who lives or works in the 47th Ward. The show is curated by Patricia Larkin Green and runs through March 15.

The exhibit features a stunning array of work, from oil paintings depicting dramatic urban scenes to abstract multimedia pieces. The collection is as striking as it is varied, and it testifies to the talent and diversity of the artists living and working in the neighborhood: Carolyn Bull, Laura Engel, Gary Gianni, Thomas Gianni, Melinda Gordon, Patricia Larkin Green, Bill Moran, Joyce Owens, Emily Rapport, Neil Shapiro, Karl Wirsum and Darcie Wadycki.

St. Matthias School's Garden Committee is pleased to announce that a new brick walkway has been installed on the Ainslie side of the building. Approximately 800 4" x 8" clay pavers comprise a safer, better-looking walkway that will serve as the centerpiece of the Sprouts Garden project.

Any resident or business owner in the ward can make a valuable and enduring contribution to the Sprouts Garden by purchasing an engraved paver during this season of giving. Your contribution is entirely tax-deductible. Pavers are available for $100 (4" x 8 ") or $225 (8" x 8"). A limited number of $500 legacy pavers (8" x 16") are available, as well. For the past several years our office has been collecting towels, sheets and blankets for area shelters. These are used for bedding to keep the cats and dogs warm and comfortable in their metal cages or concrete enclosures. We want to thank all of you who have cleaned out your donated your unwanted items. The little ones greatly appreciate your generosity. Susan Russell, a neighbor and volunteer at Animal Care & Control sent this photo after she delivered a car load of bedding there Saturday.

Congratulations to 47th Ward's Janice Thomson, a Chicago Conservation Corps (C3) volunteer, whose community outreach project "Electric Community" project won the 2014 C3 "Snowflake" award for innovation and originality. Janice worked with Alderman Pawar's office on a community wide workshop at Sulzer Library last summer.

The goal of Electric Community is to develop interactive, hands-on community events to educate residents about the sources of their electricity and actions they can take to make the electrical system greener. It does not promote any single solution but rather gives participants the information and resources they need to make their own decisions. Save the Date - Riverbank Fundraiser - Saturday, March 7 at 7pm

For everyone who enjoys birdwatching, feeding the ducks, watching an urban native prairie change through the seasons or just strolling along the path watching the river flow.

Riverbank Neighbors, led by Pete Leki, the Ecology Director at Waters School, have been stewards of the east side of the river from Montrose to Belle Plaine for over 20 yrs. They are the only neighborhood group to have this agreement with MWRD. MWRD has finished their "restoration" to keep the riverbank from deteriorating. Now the real work begins - to build more paths, erect fencing and signage and augment the plantings. Through a partnership with 501C3, non-profit, Friends of the River, funds donated are tax deductible.

Don't have a use for your old cell phones? Drop them off at the alderman's office. We collect year round for Cell Phones for Soldiers. There couldn't be an easier way to help our soldiers stay in touch with family & friends.

Lawrence Avenue Streetscape

Neighborhood identifiers are currently being installed and the contractor will fill the sidewalk vault at 1752 by mid-February.
The new traffic signal controller at Damen will be installed shortly and all traffic signals and pedestrian countdown clocks along the stretch will be re-timed to help improve traffic flow along the corridor.
This spring, all remaining plantings will be performed, fencing will be installed at Claremont Plaza, and the remaining punch list items will be addressed.

As always, pay close attention to parking restrictions.

Water Main Replacement for Western from Roscoe to Addison

Crews from the Dept. of Water Managment will begin replacing the water main from 1912 under Western from Roscoe to Addison. Parking restrictions and partial road closures will be necessary during working hours. Crews have made test holes on the east side of Western and plan to begin work next week.

Water Main Replacement for Rockwell from Irving Park to Berteau

Contractors working with the Dept. of Water Management are replacing the water main from 1909 under Rockwell from Irving Park to Berteau. Staged parking restrictions and partial road closures will be necessary during working hours. Crews plan to return next week to perform the service transfers. The project will continue being staged in one-block segments. For more information on this project, please click here.

Water Main Replacement for Berteau from Damen to Bell

Contractors working with the Dept. of Water Management have replaced the water main from 1894 under Berteau Avenue between Damen and Bell. Parking restrictions and road closures should no longer be needed. Crews have poured concrete in the trench pending full asphalt restoration in the spring as soon as weather allows. Water Main Replacement for Rockwell from Lawrence to Montrose & Eastwood from Virginia to Western

Contractors working with the Dept. of Water Management have replaced the water mains from 1906 under Rockwell from Lawrence to Montrose and Eastwood from Virginia to Western. Work is now complete with resurfacing and landscape restoration following in Spring 2015. For more information on this project, please click here.

Water Main Replacement for Seeley from Montrose to Wilson

Contractors working with the Dept. of Water Management have replaced the water main from 1890 under Seeley from Montrose to Wilson. The trenches are backfilled with concrete. Street resurfacing to be completed in Spring 2015. For more information on this project, please click here.

Water Main Replacement for Leavitt from Grace to Irving Park

Contractors working with the Dept. of Water Management are replacing the water main from 1896 under Leavitt between Grace and Irving Park. Final connections are complete and the trench is capped. METRA Traffic Closures and Detours Around Ravenswood Avenue

New Metra Station (west side): Union Pacific needs to finish up their track work before the new station on the west side (outbound) can open, which is projected to happen this spring.
METRA Phase II: Design and engineering work is currently being performed for improvements to the east side of the tracks and will be put out to bid once complete. Construction of the bridges and new station is expected to start in the fall and will last approximately 18 months. Work on the east side will move faster than on the west side since the track is currently in place there and extensive retaining wall work is not necessary.
