October 3, 2014

On this day in 1990, after 45 years of division, East and West Germany are reunited as one nation.

The 47th Ward Office will be CLOSED on Monday, October 13th.

Dear Neighbor,

This will be a fun-filled weekend in the 47th Ward. Below, you'll find a summary of the major events happening in the neighborhood.

Ravenswood ArtWalk

Ravenswood ArtWalk presents the 13th Annual Tour of Arts & Industry this weekend, Saturday from 11AM to 7PM and Sunday from 11AM to 6PM. Highlighting the Ravenswood Corridor's standing as a hub for creative innovation and industry, the event features a collection of talented artists whose work will be displayed throughout Ravenswood's galleries, studios, industrial buildings and streets. The ArtWalk's paths will converge on a central entertainment area, on the 4100 block of N. Ravenswood (between W. Belle Plaine and W. Berteau), featuring live music, food trucks, craft beer tents and, a new addition this year, a children's corner loaded with engaging performances and activities.  See the flyer below for more information.  You can also visit ravenswoodartwalk.org

St. Benedict's Oktoberfest

St. Ben's Oktoberfest kicked off today at 3pm and runs through Sunday. Enjoy the carnival rides, games and all the other fun.  See the flyer below for more information.  You can also visit stbensoktoberfest.com.

St. Matthias Friends of the Craft & Friends of the Grape

St. Matthias School will hosts their annual fundraisers this year.  Friends of the Craft and Friends of the Grape are used to fund programming and financial aid for St. Matthias School.  See the flyer below for more information.  You can also visit the St. Matthias website for more information.

Be sure to check out the all the event flyers at the end of this newsletter to learn about even more great things happening around the neighborhood (including Church garage/rummage sales) this weekend and in the coming weeks.

#11 Bus Survey

For the past few months, we have been collecting your feedback on the loss of the #11 bus from the Western Brown Line to Fullerton.  Over 2500 responses have been received. You can find our report on the survey by clicking here. Bottom line is the overwhelming majority of respondents have been adversely impacted by the loss of the bus and want to see it restored.  It's not just seniors, but families and young people trying to get around the city as well. In the coming weeks, I will be sharing these results with our community partners and we will launch a website and campaign to pressure the CTA to restore the #11 Lincoln Bus.  Keep an eye on our newsletter for more information.

I want to thank everyone who took the time to respond to this survey. This is a great step in the effort to restore the #11, and I hope you will continue to work with us as we continue engaging with the CTA on this important issue.

Have a great weekend!

Sincerely,
Ameya

Northcenter Special Service Area Reconstitution 2016

The Northcenter Chamber of Commerce is seeking signatures of support for Special Service Area (SSA) #38 Northcenter from property owners within the SSA boundaries. Since 2006, SSA #38 has been providing supplemental street services in Northcenter like sidewalk snow plowing, litter pickup, landscaping and streetscape maintenance. An SSA reconstitution process must be completed now in order for these services to continue. Without the SSA, no one, not even the City of Chicago, would step in to provide these valued services. Please keep in mind that all tax revenue collected through the SSA tax levy stays in the neighborhood in order to provide services to the neighborhood.

If you support the continuation of SSA 38, please fill out and sign the petition: http://tiny.cc/SSA38.

First and last name, address, city, state and zip as well as your signature are required. If there are any questions please call the Northcenter Chamber of Commerce at (773) 710-5866 or email info@northcenterchamber.com. You can find more information about SSA #38 services at www.northcenterchamber.com.

Report Graffiti

Be sure to report any graffiti to our office (info@chicago47.org, 773-868-4747), 311, or through the Chicago Works app.  You'll need to know the address, type of surface, and whether or not the tag is more than six feet from the ground.  Graffiti that contains profanity, hate language or is done on a church or school receives special attention.

The faster we remove graffiti the less likely vandals are to target that area again.  Thanks for your help!
Welcome Home: New Art Exhibit at the Ward Office

Alderman Ameya Pawar's vision of highlighting the works of local artists in his office has been realized through the OpenWall Chicago initiative directed by Patricia Larkin Green. Every quarter the OpenWall Chicago committee determines a theme, then displays artwork in this public space. The current exhibit, Welcome Home, features the artwork of eight veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces who live and work in the 47th Ward. Featured artists are Jasmine Clark, Stuart Hall, Mike Helbing, Jeanine Hill-Soldner, Patrick Kerrigan, Dennis Paterka, Patrick Gale Putze and Piotr Wolodkowicz. The show is curated by Thomas Gianni and Bill Moran and runs through November 30.

The public is invited to mingle with the alderman and his staff, the local community and the artists to discuss their works at the opening reception on Sunday, October 19, from 12:30 to 3:00. Kevin Barszcz, founder and marketing director of Chicago Vets, will give a talk at the reception. Chicago Vets is a non-profit organization that helps Chicago-area service members and their families' transition back to civilian life. To learn more about the artists and the event, please check out the OpenWall Chicago website at www.openwallchicago.org and leave your comments.

Dara Reports

Hundreds of folks, of all ages enjoyed a day of Health & Wellness last Saturday at Sulzer Library; thanks to the staff for making everyone feel right at home. As always the Chicago Department of Public Health workers did a splendid job giving everyone totally pain-free shots. Thanks to the vendors who gave so many various health screenings, it was like a free "mini-check-up". State officials from the Treasurer's Office and Secretary of State offered their many important services. Thanks to the volunteers from Forward Chicago and the 47th Ward Senior Council for greeting everyone and handing out information. If anyone missed getting a free flu shot, we have list of upcoming locations.

Three of the neighborhood pantries received a box and bag full of personal hygiene items thanks to those who attended Saturday's event bringing donations.

Thanks to everyone who has been donating blankets and towels for area pet shelters. Animal Care & Control got a car-full in August and PAWS received the same amount end of September. These used items are really appreciated both by those who work at the shelters and the dogs & cats who have clean bedding.

We ask if you would please take a survey which covers a topic that has been talked about increasingly in our neighborhoods.  How are you thinking about housing in your future? Although this is a very personal subject, we believe it is imperative to ask. We want to discover, assess and consider what the needs are in the future. We'd like to know what folks are thinking about or perhaps they aren't, yet.  In any case, we are all aging and we want folks to live where and as they want to. With your help, this survey will inform Forward Chicago on the best ways to help us age in place within our community.
