On this day in 1789, Thomas Jefferson was appointed America's first secretary of state and John Jay the first chief justice.

Dear Neighbor,

Tomorrow, Saturday, September 27th, my office is partnering with the Chicago Department of Public Health, the Chicago Public Library, Forward Chicago and local healthcare providers for the 47th Ward Health and Wellness Fair taking place at Sulzer Library from 9am to 2pm.  At this fair, you can receive free flu shots provided by the Chicago Dept. of Public Health, and health screenings from many local healthcare providers.  For more information on this event, see the flyer below.  I want to thank the 47th Ward Senior Council and Dara Salk for organizing this event.

Ashland Water Main Update

Water main replacement work continues on northbound Ashland.  Crews are pouring concrete in the trench from Berteau and Montrose, and that is the final step of the water main installation. The northbound lanes between Irving Park and Montrose will reopen TODAY once their work is complete.  There will be a parking restriction through early next week from Berteau to Montrose to allow the freshly poured concrete to cure where the new water main was installed.

Next week, crews will continue installing the new water main between Montrose and Lawrence in the northbound lanes.  Starting Monday, the northbound closure will only be between Montrose and Lawrence from 7am to 8pm. Wilson is open to through traffic from 7am to 9am and 4pm to 6pm to help alleviate congestion in the area around the project during rush hour.  Also expect lane shifts for Lawrence in the intersection with Ashland as the crews work on connecting the mains over the next week.

Thank you for your continued patience.  Please avoid travel in the area, when possible, and follow all detour signs.  We continue to be on schedule for resurfacing before winter.

Have a great weekend!

Sincerely,
Ameya

Northcenter Special Service Area Reconstitution 2016

The Northcenter Chamber of Commerce is seeking signatures of support for Special Service Area (SSA) #38 Northcenter from property owners within the SSA boundaries. Since 2006, SSA #38 has been providing supplemental street services in Northcenter like sidewalk snow plowing, litter pickup, landscaping and streetscape maintenance. An SSA reconstitution process must be completed now in order for these services to continue. Without the SSA, no one, not even the City of Chicago, would step in to provide these valued services. Please keep in mind that all tax revenue collected through the SSA tax levy stays in the neighborhood in order to provide services to the neighborhood.

If you support the continuation of SSA 38, please fill out and sign the petition: http://tiny.cc/SSA38.

First and last name, address, city, state and zip as well as your signature are required. If there are any questions please call the Northcenter Chamber of Commerce at (773) 710-5866 or email info@northcenterchamber.com. You can find more information about SSA #38 services at www.northcenterchamber.com.

Sunday Play Spot: A Pop-Up Plaza on Lincoln Avenue this September!

Every Sunday afternoon this September, the Sunday Play Spot will transform one block of Lincoln Avenue, from School to Roscoe, into Lakeview's pop-up plaza! From noon to 4pm, stop by the Sunday Play Spot to enjoy free playful activities for kids and adults alike, or relax outside and have a picnic. Stay tuned to http://www.sundayplayspot.com for more information about weekly programming. Sunday Play Spot is organized by the Lakeview Chamber of Commerce in partnership with SSA 27, 47th Ward Alderman Ameya Pawar, and local businesses and institutions.

Interactive public art installations, including the 50-foot "Orange You Glad to See Me?" by Latent Design, help to set the stage as much of the block becomes a playground with fun and healthy active play activities and games for all ages, from hula hoops and Zumba classes to cornhole tournaments and sidewalk chalking, all hosted by neighboring businesses. Take-out food specials on the block also provide a great opportunity to make a lunch picnic on the pop-up lawn in the middle of the street. Event participants can expect the same fun atmosphere every week, while some programming will vary from week to week. Programming details can be found at http://www.sundayplayspot.com.

Welcome Home: New Art Exhibit at the Ward Office

Alderman Ameya Pawar's vision of highlighting the works of local artists in his office has been realized through the OpenWall Chicago initiative directed by Patricia Larkin Green. Every quarter the OpenWall Chicago committee determines a theme, then displays artwork in this public space. The current exhibit, Welcome Home, features the artwork of eight veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces who live and work in the 47th Ward. Featured artists are Jasmine Clark, Stuart Hall, Mike Helbing, Jeanine Hill-Soldner, Patrick Kerrigan, Dennis Paterka, Patrick Gale Putze and Piotr Wolodkowicz. The show is curated by Thomas Gianni and Bill Moran and runs through November 30.

The public is invited to mingle with the alderman and his staff, the local community and the artists to discuss their works at the opening reception on Sunday, October 19, from 12:30 to 3:00. Kevin Barszcz, founder and marketing director of Chicago Vets, will give a talk at the reception. Chicago Vets is a non-profit organization that helps Chicago-area service members and their families' transition back to civilian life. To learn more about the artists and the event, please check out the OpenWall Chicago website at www.openwallchicago.org and leave your comments.

Report Graffiti

Be sure to report any graffiti to our office (info@chicago47.org, 773-868-4747), 311, or through the Chicago Works app.  You'll need to know the address, type of surface, and whether or not the tag is more than six feet from the ground.  Graffiti that contains profanity, hate language or is done on a church or school receives special attention.

The faster we remove graffiti the less likely vandals are to target that area again.  Thanks for your help!

Chicago Fire Department Accepting Applicants
The application period for the entry-level Firefighter/EMT exam is NOW OPEN and will run through September 16.  This is the period of time when applicants can sign up for the exam, which will be administered on December 13 and 14, 2014.  In 2006, the age to sit for the exam was 19 and the age to enter the academy was 20. It is their hope that younger individuals who get on the eligibility list will be motivated to attend college and stay out of trouble and will find a sense of opportunity about their futures.

Get Ready for Emergencies

From American Red Cross

Disasters can strike at any time, and the American Red Cross, Greater Chicago Region encourages people to be ready in case of emergency through simple planning steps like creating a supply kit and developing an evacuation plan for your household.

GET A KIT

Being prepared means being equipped with the proper supplies you may need in the event of an emergency or disaster. Keep your supplies in an easy-to-carry emergency preparedness kit, like a backpack, that you can use at home or take with you in case you must evacuate.

A kit should have the basic supplies such as:

  • Water-one gallon per person, per day (3-day supply for evacuation, 2-week supply for home)
  • Food-non-perishable, easy-to-prepare items (3-day supply for evacuation, 2-week supply for home)
  • Flashlight and batteries
  • Battery-powered or hand-crank radio (NOAA Weather Radio, if possible)
  • First aid kit
  • Medications (7-day supply) and medical items
  • Multi-purpose tool
  • Sanitation and personal hygiene items
  • Copies of personal documents (medication list and pertinent medical information, proof of address, deed/lease to home, passports, birth certificates, insurance policies)
  • Cell phone with chargers
  • Family and emergency contact information
  • Extra cash
  • Emergency blanket
  • Map(s) of the area
  • Infant supplies - diapers, formula
  • Pet supplies - food, water, leash, carrying cage for small pets

MAKE A PLAN

Everyone in the household should help put the emergency plan together so they know what they should do if something occurs. Because everyone  may not be together at home when a disaster happens,  the plan should include ways to contact one another and two places to meet - one near the home in case of a sudden emergency like a fire, and one outside the neighborhood in case circumstances prevent people from returning home. The plan should also identify an emergency contact person from outside the area in case local telephone lines are overloaded or out of service.

Any emergency plan should also include decisions about where to go if ordered to evacuate and what route to take to get there. It's a good idea to include alternate routes in case roads are closed. Don't forget family pets. Make sure to include plans for them such as pet-friendly hotels and animal shelters along the evacuation route.

RED CROSS APPS

The Red Cross has developed mobile apps that provide information on what to do before, during and after emergencies, including a "Make a Plan" feature on how to develop an emergency plan. The free apps can be downloaded from the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store for Android by searching for American Red Cross.

For more information on how to prepare for all types of emergencies, people can visit redcross.org .

About the American Red Cross:
The American Red Cross shelters, feeds and provides emotional support to victims of disasters; supplies about 40 percent of the nation's blood; teaches skills that save lives; provides international humanitarian aid; and supports military members and their families. The Red Cross is a not-for-profit organization that depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public to perform its mission. Isn't this weather spectacular! Good Morning America named Chicago one of its four pick cities to visit this weekend! Hope you get out to enjoy our neighborhood parks, shops and restaurants!

We ask if you would please take a survey which covers a topic that has been talked about increasingly in our neighborhoods.  How are you thinking about housing in your future? Although this is a very personal subject, we believe it is imperative to ask. We want to discover, assess and consider what the needs are in the future. We'd like to know what folks are thinking about or perhaps they aren't, yet.  In any case, we are all aging and we want folks to live where and as they want to. With your help, this survey will inform Forward Chicago on the best ways to help us age in place within our community.

We want to thank Bell School students Calliope & Dalia for donating some of their favorite books to our

Little Free Library. Their generosity will insure that many more children will enjoy these books.

September 21 was the Puppy Mill Awareness Day. We are so proud of Susana Mendoza and the aldermen who led the way - including Alderman Pawar - in making Chicago a ground-breaking major city in passing The Companion Animal and Consumer Protection Ordinance earlier this year. Then our Commissioner Fritchey did the same for Cook County. These brave men and women gave voices to those who have none.
