Dear Neighbor,

Autumn is finally here and there are three great ways to celebrate this weekend. I hope that you will get out to enjoy the neighborhood.

Queen of Angels Harvest Jam

Queen of Angels parish and school host their annual Harvest Jam tonight, September 19th from 5pm to 10pm and Saturday, September 20th from 1pm to 10pm.  The Harvest Jam takes place on the 2400 block of Sunnyside Avenue and in the Queen of Angels property at Western and Sunnyside.  They offer live music, food and drinks and activities for the whole family.  There is a $10 admission fee for adults.  Kids 12 and under are free.

Apple Fest

Lincoln Square Ravenswood Chamber of Commerce's annual Apple Fest is Saturday, September 20th from 9am to 5pm.  The event takes place along the 4700 block of Lincoln Avenue. Come out to celebrate Fall, and aside from the apples there are wonderful musical acts and kids activities.

Audubon Elementary Groundbreaking

Last Saturday morning, we broke ground on a new Audubon outdoor campus/playground. My office and #GROW47 has been working with the Friends of Audubon, the Audubon LSC, Chicago Public Schools, and Principal Ken Fitzner to identify and secure funds to convert Audubon's asphalt lot into a new play-space for students. My office allocated nearly $300k in aldermanic menu funds, secured $50k in private funds from Barrett and Porto (developers of the Ravenswood Station Mariano's/LA Fitness), and we have been working with the Audubon community to advance this project.

Coonley School Ribbon Cutting

Also last Saturday, we cut the ribbon on the new addition to Coonley School. This project was completed on-schedule for the start of this school year. The $16.5 million addition is 100% financed with Tax Increment Finance (TIF) funds from the Western Avenue South TIF District. Because Coonley was severely overcrowded and resides in a TIF district, I made it a priority to secure TIF funds to construct this addition. It's exciting to see this project completed and open for use! I want to thank Mayor Emanuel, Chicago Public School, The Friends of Coonley, the Coonley LSC, Principal Zurawski and #GROW47 for their partnership on the Coonley addition.

Ravenswood School Ribbon Cutting

And on Sunday, we cut the ribbon at the brand new $1.5 million outdoor campus/playground project to manage stormwater flooding in the school playlot and renovate the existing space. What does the renovation include? An outdoor amphitheater, a turf field, and many new play spaces!

While we partnered with the Friends of Ravenswood (FORS) to make this project happen, all the credit goes to this amazing group of parents and community members. They have spent countless hours writing grants and appeal letters, making phone calls, advocating for the project and going door-to-door to drum up support for Ravenswood School. I also want to congratulate FORS members Cornelia Grumman, Wendy Vasquez, Adam Walsh, Michael Waechter and everyone involved in this major effort.

Have a great weekend!

Sincerely,
Ameya

Property Tax Update from Cook County Commissioners Bridget Gainer & John Fritchey: Lake View Township Open for Appeals

Now until September 25, 2014 - homeowners who live Lake View Township (east of Western Avenue in the 47th

Ward) may appeal their property tax assessment to the Cook County Board of Review. Appealing your property tax assessment is an opportunity to ensure your property tax bills are fair and accurate. The most common reason to appeal is over-valuation. You may file your appeal online at CookCountyBoardOfReview.com.

Have questions about the appeal process or need assistance to file an appeal? Contact Commissioner Bridget Gainer's Office at 312-603-4210/info@bridgetgainer.com, Commissioner John Fritchey's Office at 773-871-4000/office@fritchey.com or Board of Review Commissioner Michael Cabonargi's (2nd District) Office at 312-603-5560.

Northcenter Special Service Area Reconstitution 2016

The Northcenter Chamber of Commerce is seeking signatures of support for Special Service Area (SSA) #38 Northcenter from property owners within the SSA boundaries. Since 2006, SSA #38 has been providing supplemental street services in Northcenter like sidewalk snow plowing, litter pickup, landscaping and streetscape maintenance. An SSA reconstitution process must be completed now in order for these services to continue. Without the SSA, no one, not even the City of Chicago, would step in to provide these valued services. Please keep in mind that all tax revenue collected through the SSA tax levy stays in the neighborhood in order to provide services to the neighborhood.

If you support the continuation of SSA 38, please fill out and sign the petition: http://tiny.cc/SSA38

First and last name, address, city, state and zip as well as your signature are required. If there are any questions please call the Northcenter Chamber of Commerce at (773) 710-5866 or email info@northcenterchamber.com. You can find more information about SSA #38 services at www.northcenterchamber.com.

Report Graffiti

Be sure to report any graffiti to our office (info@chicago47.org, 773-868-4747), 311, or through the Chicago Works app.  You'll need to know the address, type of surface, and whether or not the tag is more than six feet from the ground.  Graffiti that contains profanity, hate language or is done on a church or school receives special attention.

The faster we remove graffiti the less likely vandals are to target that area again.  Thanks for your help!
Sunday Play Spot: A Pop-Up Plaza on Lincoln Avenue this September!

Every Sunday afternoon this September, the Sunday Play Spot will transform one block of Lincoln Avenue, from School to Roscoe, into Lakeview's pop-up plaza! From noon to 4pm, stop by the Sunday Play Spot to enjoy free playful activities for kids and adults alike, or relax outside and have a picnic. Stay tuned to http://www.sundayplayspot.com for more information about weekly programming. Sunday Play Spot is organized by the Lakeview Chamber of Commerce in partnership with SSA 27, 47th Ward Alderman Ameya Pawar, and local businesses and institutions.

Interactive public art installations, including the 50-foot "Orange You Glad to See Me?" by Latent Design, help to set the stage as much of the block becomes a playground with fun and healthy active play activities and games for all ages, from hula hoops and Zumba classes to cornhole tournaments and sidewalk chalking, all hosted by neighboring businesses. Take-out food specials on the block also provide a great opportunity to make a lunch picnic on the pop-up lawn in the middle of the street. Event participants can expect the same fun atmosphere every week, while some programming will vary from week to week. Special programming this Sunday, Sept. 14, includes puppet making with Stage 773, kids eyewear show and music show outside Eye Spy Optical, and the Jeni's ice cream cart. Programming details can be found at http://www.sundayplayspot.com.

Pictures from last Sunday's event are here.
Chicago Fire Department Accepting Applicants
The application period for the entry-level Firefighter/EMT exam is NOW OPEN and will run through September 16.  This is the period of time when applicants can sign up for the exam, which will be administered on December 13 and 14, 2014.  In 2006, the age to sit for the exam was 19 and the age to enter the academy was 20. CFD has lowered the age to sit for the exam and enter the academy to 18. It is their hope that younger individuals who get on the eligibility list will be motivated to attend college and stay out of trouble and will find a sense of opportunity about their futures.

Get Ready for Emergencies

From American Red Cross

Disasters can strike at any time, and the American Red Cross, Greater Chicago Region encourages people to be ready in case of emergency through simple planning steps like creating a supply kit and developing an evacuation plan for your household.

GET A KIT

Being prepared means being equipped with the proper supplies you may need in the event of an emergency or disaster. Keep your supplies in an easy-to-carry emergency preparedness kit, like a backpack, that you can use at home or take with you in case you must evacuate.

A kit should have the basic supplies such as:

  • Water-one gallon per person, per day (3-day supply for evacuation, 2-week supply for home)
  • Food-non-perishable, easy-to-prepare items (3-day supply for evacuation, 2-week supply for home)
  • Flashlight and batteries
  • Battery-powered or hand-crank radio (NOAA Weather Radio, if possible)
  • First aid kit
  • Medications (7-day supply) and medical items
  • Multi-purpose tool
  • Sanitation and personal hygiene items
  • Copies of personal documents (medication list and pertinent medical information, proof of address, deed/lease to home, passports, birth certificates, insurance policies)
  • Cell phone with chargers
  • Family and emergency contact information
  • Extra cash
  • Emergency blanket
  • Map(s) of the area
  • Infant supplies - diapers, formula
  • Pet supplies - food, water, leash, carrying cage for small pets

MAKE A PLAN

Everyone in the household should help put the emergency plan together so they know what they should do if something occurs. Because everyone  may not be together at home when a disaster happens,  the plan should include ways to contact one another and two places to meet - one near the home in case of a sudden emergency like a fire, and one outside the neighborhood in case circumstances prevent people from returning home. The plan should also identify an emergency contact person from outside the area in case local telephone lines are overloaded or out of service.

Any emergency plan should also include decisions about where to go if ordered to evacuate and what route to take to get there. It's a good idea to include alternate routes in case roads are closed. Don't forget family pets. Make sure to include plans for them such as pet-friendly hotels and animal shelters along the evacuation route.

RED CROSS APPS

The Red Cross has developed mobile apps that provide information on what to do before, during and after emergencies, including a "Make a Plan" feature on how to develop an emergency plan. The free apps can be downloaded from the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store for Android by searching for American Red Cross.

For more information on how to prepare for all types of emergencies, people can visit redcross.org .

About the American Red Cross:
The American Red Cross shelters, feeds and provides emotional support to victims of disasters; supplies about 40 percent of the nation's blood; teaches skills that save lives; provides international humanitarian aid; and supports military members and their families. The Red Cross is a not-for-profit organization that depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public to perform its mission. For more information, please visit redcross.org or visit us on Twitter at @ChicagoRedCross.

We ask if you would please take a survey which covers a topic that has been talked about increasingly in our neighborhoods.  How are you thinking about housing in your future? Although this is a very personal subject, we believe it is imperative to ask. We want to discover, assess and consider what the needs are in the future. We'd like to know what folks are thinking about or perhaps they aren't, yet.  In any case, we are all aging and we want folks to live where and as they want to. With your help, this survey will inform Forward Chicago on the best ways to help us age in place within our community.
