Dear Neighbor,

School is back in session, and this week I want to let you know about some of the great things happening at our neighborhood schools.

Coonley School

The addition to Coonley School was completed on-schedule for the start of this school year. The $16.5 million addition is 100% financed with Tax Increment Finance (TIF) funds from the Western Avenue South TIF District. Because Coonley was severely overcrowded and resides in a TIF district, I made it a priority to secure TIF funds to construct this addition. It's exciting to see this project come online.

I want to thank Mayor Emanuel, Chicago Public School, The Friends of Coonley, the Coonley LSC, Principal Zurawski and #GROW47 for their partnership on the Coonley addition.  We will be cutting the ribbon on the new addition soon.

Ravenswood School

The new outdoor campus at Ravenswood School is nearing completion.  This project features more shade, two new play equipment structures, a custom climbing feature, an outdoor classroom, a sport court and a new turf field.  It also benefits the neighborhood using permeable surfaces and other features that reduce the amount of stormwater runoff into our sewer system, and helps prevent flooding.

There will be a grand opening event on Sunday, September 14th from noon to 2pm.

I want to thank Governor Quinn, Mayor Emanuel, Senate President John Cullerton, State Senator Heather Steans, State Rep. Greg Harris, and State Rep. Ann Williams, Friends of Ravenswood School, Principal Manaen and #GROW47 for their partnership on this project.

McPherson School

Phases 1 and 3 of the outdoor campus improvements, which includes a new playground, at McPherson School will be complete by October.   This project was made possible with Open Space Impact Fees, Aldermanic Menu, 47th Ward TIF Funds, State of Illinois Capital funds secured by Heather Steans, and a grant from Barrett & Porto, the developers of the Ravenswood Mariano's.

McPherson School is the starting point for all of the improvement on #ANewLawrence.  In fact, I am getting calls from real estate agents telling me that families are seeking out the McPherson attendance area as they are looking for homes in our community. This news confirms our vision to build community and tie all economic development to neighborhood schools.  Simply put, invest in neighborhood schools and everything else follows.

Audubon School
We are finalizing the details prior to breaking ground on a new outdoor campus at Audubon School.  The first phase of this project will be funded with a combination of Aldermanic Menu and grant funds from Barrett & Porto.  We will have a formal announcement, and more information on this project soon.

German-American Fest & Von Steuben Day Parade

The German-American Fest is this weekend under two big tents at Lincoln and Leland.  The fest is open Friday, September 5 from 5pm to 11pm, Saturday, September 6 from 12pm to 11pm and Sunday, September 7 from 12pm to 10pm.

The neighborhood will also host the 49th Annual Von Steuben Day Parade on Saturday, September 6th.  I am honored to be serving as this year's Grand Marshall.  The parade steps off from Lincoln & Warner at 2pm.  Please note that parking is restricted on the parade route that heads north on Lincoln to Eastwood then west on Eastwood before turning north on Western to Lawrence. Lincoln Ave. will be closed to traffic between Irving Park and Berteau during parade staging from 12pm to 2pm.  Traffic will not be permitted on or across the parade route while the parade is in progress. Traffic Management personnel will be present to direct traffic, and please remember to avoid driving in the area during the parade.

Have a great weekend!

Sincerely,
Ameya

Street Sweeping
From April 1 until December 1 the Department of Streets and Sanitation has sweepers working in the 47th Ward to clear debris and dust from residential and arterial streets.  The schedule for street cleaning on residential and arterial streets can be found on chicago47.org
2014-2015 Residential Pick-up/Van Permits Available

If you are the owner of a pickup truck or van, you need a special permit to park on the residential streets in the 47th Ward.

The permits for the 2014-2015 season are now available.  Please bring your registration and city sticker information into our office along with your truck to receive your permit.

Report Graffiti

Be sure to report any graffiti to our office (info@chicago47.org, 773-868-4747), 311, or through the Chicago Works app.  You'll need to know the address, type of surface, and whether or not the tag is more than six feet from the ground.  Graffiti that contains profanity, hate language or is done on a church or school receives special attention.

The faster we remove graffiti the less likely vandals are to target that area again.  Thanks for your help!

Property Tax Update from Cook County Commissioners Bridget Gainer & John Fritchey: Lake View Township Open for Appeals

Now until September 25, 2014 - homeowners who live Lake View Township (east of Western Avenue in the 47th

Ward) may appeal their property tax assessment to the Cook County Board of Review. Appealing your property tax assessment is an opportunity to ensure your property tax bills are fair and accurate. The most common reason to appeal is over-valuation. You may file your appeal online at CookCountyBoardOfReview.com.

Have questions about the appeal process or need assistance to file an appeal? Contact Commissioner Bridget Gainer's Office at 312-603-4210/info@bridgetgainer.com, Commissioner John Fritchey's Office at 773-871-4000/office@fritchey.com or Board of Review Commissioner Michael Cabonargi's (2nd District) Office at 312-603-5560.

Chicago Fire Department Accepting Applicants
The application period for the entry-level Firefighter/EMT exam is NOW OPEN and will run through September 16.  This is the period of time when applicants can sign up for the exam, which will be administered on December 13 and 14, 2014.  In 2006, the age to sit for the exam was 19 and the age to enter the academy was 20. CFD has lowered the age to sit for the exam and enter the academy to 18. It is their hope that younger individuals who get on the eligibility list will be motivated to attend college and stay out of trouble and will find a sense of opportunity about their futures.

Northcenter Special Service Area Reconstitution 2016

The Northcenter Chamber of Commerce is seeking signatures of support for Special Service Area (SSA) #38 Northcenter from property owners within the SSA boundaries. Since 2006, SSA #38 has been providing supplemental street services in Northcenter like sidewalk snow plowing, litter pickup, landscaping and streetscape maintenance. An SSA reconstitution process must be completed now in order for these services to continue. Without the SSA, no one, not even the City of Chicago, would step in to provide these valued services. Please keep in mind that all tax revenue collected through the SSA tax levy stays in the neighborhood in order to provide services to the neighborhood.

If you support the continuation of SSA 38, please fill out and sign the petition: http://tiny.cc/SSA38

First and last name, address, city, state and zip as well as your signature are required. If there are any questions please call the Northcenter Chamber of Commerce at (773) 710-5866 or email info@northcenterchamber.com. You can find more information about SSA #38 services at www.northcenterchamber.com.

Notes from a neighborhood Block Party - thanks to Tana D.

Saturday was a warm shower free time to gather on the 4400 block of Artesian. The bouncy house arrived at 1000 to the wonder of 40 small feet who attacked it with enough energy to make an adult smile. Chairs and tables appeared. Slowly people crossed the street, stood in the street and turned it into a playground. Bikes became a parade. Conversations became concerns about traffic, flooding, sick neighbors. Laughter and music unrestrained. An Irish piper stopped the activity as everyone listened. Grandma read a book to a small child who needed a quiet moment. Food and fun. Games and a big fire truck. Look what is that? -- a Peregrine Falcon viewed the event from the sidewalk. Where did it go? Lovely. So what did you like best I ask the 7 year old? EVERYTHING.

Thanks to Beth and Pat S., the piper, the bouncy house people, Alderman Pawar (who attended), the Alderman's staff, the fireman, and the falcon.
