Dear Neighbor,

Tomorrow, I will join Lake View High School Principal Scott Grens, Lake View Partners, GROW47, local elected officials, for a Lake View High School Beautification Day! We will be painting, cleaning, and building community around our neighborhood high school. Rep. Ann Williams and Friends of Ameya Pawar (my political action committee) are picking up the cost of paint--all you have to do is show up, roll up your sleeves, and help us build a neighborhood K-12 system in our community.

It's not too late to join in this effort.  Click here to register.

Lawrence Avenue Streetscape

The Lawrence Avenue Streetscape is proceeding on-schedule.  The roadway between Western and Ravenswood has been milled, and will be resurfaced curbline to curbline next week.  Street paving between Western and Ravenswood will be completed next week. Temporary striping will be added right after the new asphalt is laid down and permanent striping will occur soon after.  Crosswalks along this stretch are also expected to be completed next week. As always, pay close attention to parking restrictions. The remaining stretch from Ravenswood to Clark will be resurfaced in late October.

By the end of November, the bulk of the project will be completed including: final installation of new streetlights, new community identifiers, bike racks, garbage baskets, street markings, curb and gutter installation and sidewalk construction.  Next Spring, crews will finish landscaping and finalize any other small items that are not completed before winter.

We are nearing the completion of this project, and I thank you for your continued patience as we put the final touches on #ANewLawrence.

Report Graffiti

As the weather turns warmer, we are seeing more graffiti throughout Chicago.  Be sure to report any graffiti to our office (info@chicago47.org, 773-868-4747), 311, or through the Chicago Works app.  You'll need to know the address, type of surfac

ed, and whether or not the tag is more than six feet from the ground.  Graffiti that contains profanity, hate language or is done o n a church or school receives special attention. e tagg

The faster we remove graffiti the less likely vandals are to target that area again.  Thanks for your help!

Attorney General Madigan Warns Illinois Residents of "Microsoft" Tech Support Phone Scam

Attorney General Lisa Madigan today reported Illinois residents are being targeted by phone scammers who pose as representatives of Microsoft or related technology support service providers, claiming to have detected viruses or malware on targets' computers to trick them into providing remote computer access or convincing targets to pay for unnecessary software fixes. Madigan's office has received several complaints from Central Illinois residents who have received these calls.

As part of this scam, cybercriminals use publicly available phone directories to ascertain computer users' names and other personal information when they call, according to Microsoft. The scammers might even guess what operating system users have on their computers. Once the scammers gain the target's trust, they typically ask for a user name and password or ask the target to install software that will let them access the target computer to "fix" the supposed problem. But instead of providing any service, they trick the target into installing malware that could steal sensitive data.

"If you receive a call like this, hang up the phone immediately," Attorney General Madigan said. "Legitimate companies will not initiate a call to you and ask you for personal information. This is an outright scam."

Madigan also offered the following tips to avoid falling victim to this scam:

  • Never give your password out on the phone, and never provide your credit card or financial information to someone who calls and claims to be from a technical support service.
  • Do not expect caller ID will verify a legitimate caller. Scammers "spoof" phone numbers, meaning they use technology to appear to be calling from a legitimate source.
  • If a caller pressures you to buy software or requests any other upfront payment, immediately hang up. If you're worried about your computer's security, call your security software company directly for more information.
  • If you think you might have been a victim of this scam, Attorney General Madigan suggested Illinois residents:
  • Update or download legitimate security software applications to scan your computer. Delete anything identified as a problem.
  • Change your passwords.
  • If you paid for bogus services with a credit card, call your credit card provider using the toll-free number on the back of your card and report the unauthorized charges.
  • Review your banking statements for other unauthorized charges.
  • Call Attorney General Madigan's Identity Theft Hotline (1-866-999-5630), which is staffed by a team of experts who provide one-on-one assistance to help consumers report identity thefts to law enforcement and financial institutions, repair their credit, and prevent future problems.

Northcenter Special Service Area Reconstitution 2016

The Northcenter Chamber of Commerce is seeking signatures of support for Special Service Area (SSA) #38 Northcenter from property owners within the SSA boundaries. Since 2006, SSA #38 has been providing supplemental street services in Northcenter like sidewalk snow plowing, litter pickup, landscaping and streetscape maintenance. An SSA reconstitution process must be completed now in order for these services to continue. Without the SSA, no one, not even the City of Chicago, would step in to provide these valued services. Please keep in mind that all tax revenue collected through the SSA tax levy stays in the neighborhood in order to provide services to the neighborhood.

If you support the continuation of SSA 38, please fill out and sign the petition: http://tiny.cc/SSA38

First and last name, address, city, state and zip as well as your signature are required. If there are any questions please call the Northcenter Chamber of Commerce at (773) 710-5866 or email info@northcenterchamber.com. You can find more information about SSA #38 services at www.northcenterchamber.com.

Pet Summer Safety Tips
  • Water - Give your pets plenty of fresh, clean water.  Animals can get dehydrated very quickly especially in the heat.
  • Shade - Make sure your pet has a place to go to get out of the sun.  Try to keep them indoors during extreme heat.
  • Rest - Do not over-exercise your animal in the heat.  On a sweltering day, the best time to exercise your pet is in the early morning or late evening.
  • Watch - Never leave your animals alone in a parked vehicle.  In extreme heat, the temperature can rise in your vehicle very quickly.  This can leave your pet vulnerable to heat stroke, which can onset very quickly.

Dara Reports

Kyle, a summer intern and entering Senor at Whitney Young High School, interviewed one of our volunteers last week:

Every Thursday, John, a local realtor, spends his morning hours helping out.  A few days ago, I had the privilege to interview John for this spotlight, and I learned a bit about why he decides to take time out of his day to volunteer.  While John says his favorite part of the job is helping his community, he also enjoys the opportunity to meet and assist his neighbors in the ward.  If he had to stop, though, John says he'd miss the friends he's made in the volunteers and staff at the office the most.  On behalf of the Alderman and the 47th Ward, we would like to commend John for his dedicated service and generosity.  Thank you!

If you've passed by the American Indian Center on Wilson during the growing season you've seen their lovely native gardens. Our 47th Ward Garden Group has toured the gardens with Eli, their Ecology Teacher and mentor. The tireless work that is done there is no longer just appreciated by Chicagoans as you will read in this article in the San Francisco Chronicle
