Dear Neighbor,
Our third annual 47th Ward School Supply Drive, in partnership with Ravenswood Community Services and the Common Pantry, is currently underway. Since 2011, we've collected tons of school supplies including backpacks, notebooks, pens, pencils and calculators for students and families in our community. Last year we collected two full car-loads, our best year yet! This year, we want to collect even more. The supply drive runs till August 22 so there is still time for you to help out.
You can drop-off supplies at the 47th Ward Office, 4243 N. Lincoln Avenue. Let's start the school year off right!
#GROW47 Update
Since taking office in 2011, my all-in has been our neighborhood schools. And to that end, my office launched #GROW47. The goal: to build a complete neighborhood K-12 system in our community. Simply put, my goal is to provide families what they seek out in the suburbs - a community K-12 experience - one that removes the stress of navigating the selective enrollment system. And in three years, #GROW47 has allocated millions in TIF funds to neighborhood schools, raised over $400k in private funds, and funded projects at every school in the ward. These projects are now in progress or have been completed. They include:
- The addition to Bell Elementary School (complete and open for use)
 - The addition to Coonley Elementary School (nearing completion)
- Ravenswood Elementary School's Green Not Gray campus/playground (under construction)
- The Audubon Elementary School playground (breaking ground soon)
- The McPherson Elementary School campus/playground (under construction)
Neighborhood elementary schools and neighborhood high schools will always remain my 'all-in.' I believe that with capital investment and community involvement, we can complete the #GROW47 vision of a neighborhood K-12 system in our community.
Senator Durbin Visits the 47th Ward!
And finally, last Saturday, Senator Durbin accompanied me to a few block parties and Shakespeare in the Park (at Welles Park)! I have been a long-time fan of Senator Durbin and his statesman-like approach to governing and legislating. Here are some pictures from his visit.
Have a great weekend!
Sincerely,
|

Report Graffiti
As the weather turns warmer, we are seeing more graffiti throughout Chicago. Be sure to report any graffiti to our office (info@chicago47.org, 773-868-4747), 311, or through the Chicago Works app. You'll need to know the address, type of surfac ed, and whether or not the tag is more than six feet from the ground. Graffiti that contains profanity, hate language or is done o n a church or school receives special attention. e tagg
The faster we remove graffiti the less likely vandals are to target that area again. Thanks for your help! |

City of Chicago Municipal Aggregation Update
If you are part of the city's municipal aggregation program for electricity, you should have received notice in the mail regarding updated terms to the City's deal with Integrys Energy Services. There is now a new structure for a monthly customer charge that may cost you more money. It depends on your energy consumption and customer code. The Citizens Utility Board has a calculator on their website. Be sure to have your electric bill handy. Additionally, they have a listing of alternative providers and their prices. If you simply opt-out, you will be returned to the regular ComEd rate, which is slated to change to an unknown amount in September. Be sure to carefully examine all of your options before making a decision. You can opt-out of the municipal aggregation program at any time for any reason without penalty. |

Northcenter Special Service Area Reconstitution 2016
The Northcenter Chamber of Commerce is seeking signatures of support for Special Service Area (SSA) #38 Northcenter from property owners within the SSA boundaries. Since 2006, SSA #38 has been providing supplemental street services in Northcenter like sidewalk snow plowing, litter pickup, landscaping and streetscape maintenance. An SSA reconstitution process must be completed now in order for these services to continue. Without the SSA, no one, not even the City of Chicago, would step in to provide these valued services. Please keep in mind that all tax revenue collected through the SSA tax levy stays in the neighborhood in order to provide services to the neighborhood.
If you support the continuation of SSA 38, please fill out and sign the petition: http://tiny.cc/SSA38.
First and last name, address, city, state and zip as well as your signature are required. If there are any questions please call the Northcenter Chamber of Commerce at (773) 710-5866 or email info@northcenterchamber.com. You can find more information about SSA #38 services at www.northcenterchamber.com.

Pet Summer Safety Tips
- Water - Give your pets plenty of fresh, clean water. Animals can get dehydrated very quickly especially in the heat.
- Shade - Make sure your pet has a place to go to get out of the sun. Try to keep them indoors during extreme heat.
- Rest - Do not over-exercise your animal in the heat. On a sweltering day, the best time to exercise your pet is in the early morning or late evening.
- Watch - Never leave your animals alone in a parked vehicle. In extreme heat, the temperature can rise in your vehicle very quickly. This can leave your pet vulnerable to heat stroke, which can onset very quickly.

Summer Interns
We tremendously appreciated the TEN (a record!) smart, hard-working, creative summer interns who added to our regular cadre of volunteers in our office this summer. Two are entering seniors at Walter Payton & Whitney Young. Two will be college freshmen at University of Iowa and New York University. The four colleg e interns attend University of Illinois, University of Chicago & Earlham College. Our summer was filled with their ideas, humor and dedication to the many projects they diligently put their bright minds to. They worked the front desk, greeting folks both in person and on the phone, and helping with the myriad of issues that come to our service office daily. They created spreadsheets, met with businesses on Lincoln Avenue regarding the #11 bus, entered the #11 Bus Surveys, researched Senior Housing, assisted with C3 projects, designed & painted our Little Free Library, attended our Ward Nights and City Council sessions, learned tree trimming skills and much much more.
While the staff and volunteers benefitted from their many hours of work you might ask what the students received from working here. They experienced what working in a community looks and feels like. They honed their skills in patience, listening and empathy. They learned to find answers, to be proactive in seeking solutions before a problem arises and to trust both themselves and others. I believe their involvement in real world circumstances, working in a collaborative way on a team, was invaluable. Each of them gained self-esteem and strength in knowing they can handle whatever comes their way.

Shakespeare & Durbin came to Wells Park
Congratulations Welles Park for setting the record for largest audiences at a Shakespeare in the Parks event in Chicago, 1,750 last Friday and 2,600 last Saturday. And to surprise the theater goers, US Senator Durbin was among the crowd. The senator also surprised two of our neighborhood block party's over the weekend; Alderman Pawar accompanied Senator Dick Durbin as he stopped by to meet some neighbors and to see the fun everyone was having while building strong communities.
A Midsummer Night's Dream was a huge success, thanks in part to the perfect weather. We also want to thank Senator Durbin for joining Alderman Pawar at this highly anticipated yearly event. The singers from Old Town School of Folk Music were a charming extra entertainment. We want to thank everyone who works to bring these accomplished actors to our community every year: Mayor Rahm Emanuel, The Chicago Park District, The corporate sponsors, Welles Park Advisory Council and most of all the Chicago Shakespeare Theater - one of Chicago's Gems.
_____________________________________________________________________________________ Parkway Gardens are Good for our Community
Considering adding to your parkway or corner garden? Or starting a new one? Shade or sun; we have plants for you. Please contact Dara.
Take a look at this reclaimed piece of weedy, overgrown land turned into a lush garden at Campbell & Grace. Who has worked this miraculous transformation - twins Matthew & Andrew B. are entering 2nd grade at Bell School. They are true believers that the carrots & broccoli they grow are the tastiest they've ever had. Who can blame their dad Jim for being proud of his young gardeners? The entire neighborhood thanks them for beautifying this corner of the ward.
_____________________________________________________________________________________ Play Golf and Drive out Hunger! Join The Friendship Center for its first ever golf outing to benefit the continued operations and mission of feeding our neighbors in need. Over 400 households benefit from The Friendship Center's services every month. "Golf for Good" on Friday, September 12th at Deerpath Golf Course and help us drive hunger out of Chicago. Individual and groups welcome! Sponsor a hole or cart and show your company's support. Registration forms available by emailing lincolnsquarefc@gmail.com or visit npfriendshipcenter.org. Back to School Immunizations The Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH) launched its 'I AM ANOUTBREAK' campaign to remind parents to get all recommended vaccinations for their children before the start of the 2014-15 school year. CDPH also partnered with SmartChicago Collaborative to develop a 'Back to School' immunization app. The app helps parents find a convenient immunization event in their neighborhoods. Vaccines are provided to children ages six months to 18 years free of charge at the events. Among this year's new vaccine requirements for students in Illinois are two doses of the chickenpox (varicella) vaccine. Every year for the past five years, CDPH has received reports of between 40 and 70 people infected with chickenpox. Most of these people were school-aged children. Since two doses of the vaccine are needed to provide the best protection from chickenpox, the new requirement for kindergartners, 6th and 9th graders to show proof of having received two doses will ensure that fewer of our Chicago students will get chickenpox. The campaign runs through September 30th. To have your child vaccinated, talk to your doctor or call a pharmacy. If you do not have a doctor, call 311 to locate a FastTrack Immunization Clinics. 47th Ward Health & Wellness Event Save the Date: Saturday, September 27. Free! Flu Shots, Eye Sight Screening, BP, Blood Glucose, BMI, register to vote, get a State of Illinois ID and more! Halloween is only 11 weeks away! The dates for Block Parties are: Saturday, October 25th, 8am-dusk, or Friday, October 31st, 3pm-dusk. After summer we require street closures end at dusk for safety reasons. As always, we take requests in the order in which they are received; first applied for, first permitted. Preference will be given to those blocks that have not had a Block Party this summer. Please find the form on our website. _____________________________________________________________________________________ Please share these links with family and friends.
