Dear Neighbor,

This morning, I testified in front of the Zoning Board of Appeals (ZBA) to oppose the Chicago Cubs' special use permit application to operate a remote parking lot at 3900 N. Rockwell.  I testified alongside many members of our community who also oppose this lot.  The ZBA posed additional questions to the Chicago Cubs about the operation of the lot, and the Cubs have until the close of business to respond to the questions.  We anticipate that the ZBA will vote on this matter today.  We will notify you once a decision has been made.  For additional background on the Chicago Cubs' application for a special use permit, see last week's newsletter.

Hunger Walk

The Greater Chicago Food Depository (GCFD), will be hosting its 29th Annual Hunger Walk, tomorrow, June 21st.  The 3.1 mile Hunger Walk benefits pantries, soup kitchens, and shelters in Cook County.

There are four 47th Ward organizations who can benefit from your participation in the walk.  Register to walk by going to the Hunger Walk website.  The form will ask you to indicate which agency your walk will sponsor.  The codes identifying each 47th Ward agency can be found below.

More information on the event can be found by clicking here

NNA Garden Walk

On Sunday June 22, the Northcenter Neighborhood Association will be hosting their 8th Annual Garden Walk.

This event draws visitors from near and far because there's so much to enjoy: live music, lemonade stands, pedicab rides, and a plethora of delightful urban gardens.  The self-guided garden tour will begin at Alexander Graham Bell School at 3730 N. Oakley St. (at Grace St.), where maps can be picked up. A suggested donation of $5 will benefit the Common Pantry.  There is no suggested donation for seniors.

The Northcenter Garden Walk also will feature live rock, jazz and blues music from local bands and musicians including Nobody Nobody Sent, St. Jams Band, Jason Miller, Heather Riordan and the Quinn family.

For more information, visit the NNA website.

47th Ward Summer Bike Ride
Please join me at our 47th Ward Summer Bike Ride, TOMORROW, June 21st, 9:30am at Northcenter Town Square.  This leisurely ride is a great opportunity to get some exercise, meet you neighbors, and learn more about the great things happening in the ward.  More information can be found on the flyer below.  I want to thank the Chainlink, Green Machine Cycles, and CDOT for partnering with my office on this event.

Finally, I'd like to recognize Mayor Emanuel's outgoing Legislative Director and 47th Ward resident Matt Hynes. Matt has been relentless in his pursuit to pass legislation to stabilize Chicago's finances. On behalf of my office and the entire 47th Ward, I'd like to extend a big thank you to Matt for his service to our community and the City of Chicago.  I wish him the best in all his future endeavors.

Have a great weekend.

Sincerely,
Ameya

Thefts from cars have been occurring near schools while parents or caregivers are inside picking up children.  Please be on the lookout for any suspicious persons in the area during these times.  If picking up your child from school, do not leave any valuables in your vehicle.
Report Graffiti

As the weather turns warmer, we are seeing more graffiti throughout Chicago.  Be sure to report any graffiti to our office ([email protected], 773-868-4747), 311, or through the Chicago Works app.  You'll need to know the address, type of surface tagged, and whether or not the tag is more than six feet from the ground.  Graffiti that contains profanity, hate language or is done on a church or school receives special attention.

The faster we remove graffiti the less likely vandals are to target that area again.  Thanks for your help!

Pet Summer Safety Tips
  • Water - Give your pets plenty of fresh, clean water.  Animals can get dehydrated very quickly especially in the heat.
  • Shade - Make sure your pet has a place to go to get out of the sun.  Try to keep them indoors during extreme heat.
  • Rest - Do not over-exercise your animal in the heat.  On a sweltering day, the best time to exercise your pet is in the early morning or late evening.
  • Watch - Never leave your animals alone in a parked vehicle.  In extreme heat, the temperature can rise in your vehicle very quickly.  This can leave your pet vulnerable to heat stroke, which can onset very quickly.

Arts & Culture in the 47th Ward

by Office Intern Luis Lopez Reichling, St. Benedict Preparatory School

"Dance is a lifelong skill," according to Julee Mertz, director of Dance Center Chicago (DCC). Mertz believes that the skills one acquires through dance practice - coordination, timing and moving in sync with others - are also useful in life. Based at 3868 N. Lincoln Avenue, DCC teaches these skills to nonprofessionals of all ages and levels, while providing a space that is open to the public and to serious dance artists. Founded ten years ago by artists Ron and Mary Ford, the center offers instruction in a broad range of styles, from Ballroom to Tap to Latin, and represents an unusual mix of local amateurs and professionals.

Drop-in classes are offered every Wednesday at 8:00 PM. An upcoming four-week progressive class will start in July and a new set of salsa lessons will begin July 7th. See www.dancecenterchicago.com.

Another newcomer to our ward is The Sullivan Chicago Studio of Performing Arts (SCSPA) at 4139 N. Western Avenue. Founded by actors and musical performers Sean and Megan Sullivan, this company teaches a variety of performing arts instead of focusing on one particular craft. The reason for the wide range of artistic focuses, the Sullivans say, is because music, theater, and dance all require a similar set of skills that can be applied off and on the stage. SCSPA tailors to any kind of performing interest and experience level, and is open to newcomers. Even if you are not experienced in acting or the performing arts, you can be assured this company will help you find your "inner performer."

Summer classes and workshops are forming now, with an open house scheduled for August 24th from 2:30 to 4:00 PM. See www.thescspa.com.

Chicago River Work (east side) Berteau to Montrose (from Riverbank Neighbors)

Please check out this updated landscaping plan for the bank.

New to the plan:

  • removal of all Ailanthus, honeysuckle and buckthorn (all invasives);
  • add soil to the rip rap on the upper sections of the project area to make planting easier and recovery quicker;
  • substitute for the elderberry, since we said we have a thriving e-berry community already;
  • substituted a cover seed mix instead of the IDOT mix we objected to;
  • four species of gray dogwood (stakes) that a vigorous colonizers for the new territories.

These will be substantial new lands, with the bank secured, and planting begun. Riverbank Neighbors will be able to enrich species diversity over time and introduce many new forbs. Habitat for birds and reptiles and amphibians and mammals will be greatly improved.

Horner Park Riverbank Project (from US Army Corps)

Tree cutting is complete. Erosion Control consisting of silt fence, silt curtain, inlet protection is installed. Excavation of topsoil, stripping, fill disposal and topsoil placement is underway.   Excavation to install Limestone/Flagstone is underway. Root Wads will also be installed along the river bank in the coming weeks.

  • Ravenswood (west side) between Lawrence and Grace landscaping projects are underway along the base of the walls along the Metra tracks.  Short closures will be necessary to install the new plants, so pay attention to parking restriction signs.
