Dear Neighbor,

This weekend the Northcenter Chamber of Commerce is hosting their annual Ribfest. The 47th Ward office is proud to be a sponsor. Ribfest dates back to 1999, and was recently voted the best food festival by the Chicago Reader for 2012 and 2013. The proceeds from Ribfest have supported a number of community initiatives including: summer concerts, greening, beautification efforts and direct grants to community non-profits and schools. Because of Ribfest, the Northcenter Chamber has been able to invest over $250,000 into our community. I want to thank Executive Director Garrett Fitzgerald, Board President Michael Kane and the entire Northcenter Chamber Board and member-businesses for making Northcenter one of the best neighborhoods in Chicago, and for making Ribfest the one of the best festivals of the summer.

Ribfest kicks-off tonight. The festival takes place along Lincoln Avenue from Irving Park to Berteau. This section of Lincoln Avenue will be closed until early Monday morning. Please be aware of this closure, and plan your travel accordingly. The fest is open from 5pm to 10pm tonight and from 12pm to 10pm on Saturday and Sunday. For full details on Ribfest check their website.

I hope you will join me this weekend for another great Ribfest.

Chicago Minimum Wage

In May, Mayor Emanuel asked me to serve on the Minimum Wage Working Group. This group was tasked with developing a recommendation on raising Chicago's minimum wage. I'll be working with the group over the next month to develop recommendations to submit to the Mayor in July. Mayor Emanuel asked the Working Group to hold a series of public meetings to gather input and to inform the group's recommendation. The first public hearing will be on Monday, June 9th from 7pm to 9pm at Kennedy-King College (6301 S. Halsted St). Additional meetings will be held throughout Chicago during June. You can also submit your input, comments or concerns directly to the working group by clicking here. This site will also be updated with the dates and times of future meetings. I look forward to hearing from you.

Have a safe and happy Ribfest weekend!

Sincerely,
Ameya

2014-2015 Residential Pick-up/Van Permits Available

If you are the owner of a pickup truck or van, you need a special permit to park on the residential streets in the 47th Ward.

The permits for the 2014-2015 season are now available.  Please bring your registration and city sticker information into our office along with your truck to receive your permit.

Report Graffiti

As the weather turns warmer, we are seeing more graffiti throughout Chicago.  Be sure to report any graffiti to our office (info@chicago47.org, 773-868-4747), 311, or through the Chicago Works app.  You'll need to know the address, type of surface tagged, and whether or not the tag is more than six feet from the ground.  Graffiti that contains profanity, hate language or is done on a church or school receives special attention.

The faster we remove graffiti the less likely vandals are to target that area again.  Thanks for your help!

Consumer Alert from IL Attorney General Lisa Madigan

EMAIL SCAMMERS POSING AS ATTORNEY GENERAL'S OFFICE TO COLLECT PHONY DEBT

Attorney General Lisa Madigan alerted Illinois residents about an email scam that uses her office's name and falsely threatens prosecution to collect on supposed debts.

Madigan's office is investigating the scam after Illinois residents reported receiving emails from accounts that fraudulently appear to be sent by a representative of the Attorney General's office. The emails include an attached "final warning" letter stamped with an official-looking seal that alleges the recipient owes money on an outstanding loan and must pay off the balance or face prosecution by the office.

"This email is an outright scam," Madigan said. "Do not respond to anyone claiming to represent my office with demands for money or threatening prosecution. Instead, call our Consumer Fraud Bureau immediately at 1-800-243-0618."

Madigan's office said people who have applied for loans online may be at particular risk for the scam because they have provided their personal and financial information to companies that in turn sell the information to either lenders or, in some cases, illegal fraudsters seeking to use the personal information for profit.

Chicago River Work (east side) Berteau to Montrose (from Riverbank Neighbors)

Please check out this updated landscaping plan for the bank.

New to the plan:

  • removal of all Ailanthus, honeysuckle and buckthorn (all invasives);
  • add soil to the rip rap on the upper sections of the project area to make planting easier and recovery quicker;
  • substitute for the elderberry, since we said we have a thriving e-berry community already;
  • substituted a cover seed mix instead of the IDOT mix we objected to;
  • four species of gray dogwood (stakes) that a vigorous colonizers for the new territories.

These will be substantial new lands, with the bank secured, and planting begun. Riverbank Neighbors will be able to enrich species diversity over time and introduce many new forbs. Habitat for birds and reptiles and amphibians and mammals will be greatly improved.

Tree cutting is complete. Erosion Control consisting of silt fence, silt curtain, inlet protection is installed.
