Dear Neighbor,

The 47th Ward Green Council is now Green47.  Since I took office in 2011, this group has lead environmental initiatives in the 47th Ward.  This committed group of neighbors are working to raise our awareness of environmental issues and leading grassroots sustainability efforts.

Some examples of their work include:

  • The Monthly Repair Cafe, where you can bring broken items to be repaired.
  • Twice yearly Clean & Greens, recycle and bring reusable items which are donated to charities.
  • Quarterly Information Sessions, on topics like home energy efficiency, composting and weatherization.
  • Monthly Gardening Workshops, which teach about chemical-free techniques and use of native plants.
  • Parkway and Corner Gardening support, resources and education.
  • Development of Community Gardens and Gathering Places.

If you are interested in joining this group or participating in the events they organize, please contact Dara Salk, in my office, at dara@chicago47.org or 773-868-4747.  I want to thank everyone who has been a part of this fantastic work.

City Sticker Sales

Chicago City Vehicle Sticker season is quickly approaching.

This year, we say goodbye to long lines and sticker season headaches. The biggest change in the more than 100-year-old program is coming as the Office of the City Clerk moves from the horse & buggy era to the 21st Century.

This means that while this year's sales season will look much like the way the Office of the City Clerk has always sold Vehicle Stickers, there are major changes taking place as we move to the new Year-Round Chicago City Vehicle Sticker Sales Program.

The goal is simple: Ending the long lines and processing times and improving customer service to you.

When motorists come in this summer to purchase a Chicago City Vehicle Sticker, they will be assigned a new renewal month. With the assignment of that new renewal date, the Year-Round Sales Program will work much like how we renew our plate registration with the Illinois Secretary of State's Office. Seniors will continue to renew on a June-to-June schedule and are exempt from Year-Round Sales.

The new renewal date is set using the expiration of each motorist's State License Plate Registration. The new Chicago City Vehicle Sticker renewal date will be offset six months from the expiration of a motorist's State License Plate Registration.

For example, if your State License Plate Registration expires in April 2014, then your new renewal month will now be October, or six months AFTER your state license plate renewal month

Motorists will be given two options to transition to their new renewal date. The first option is the Prorated Chicago City Vehicle Sticker, a short-term sticker. If we are using the October example, this sticker will be valid from July 2014 to October 2014, or four months. That means in October, the motorist would have to return and purchase a 12-month sticker.

The Extended Chicago City Vehicle Sticker is a long-term option that offers greater convenience, but it will cost more because it will be valid for four months PLUS a year. In other words, using this example, the motorist would be purchasing a sticker that is good for 16 months.

Please keep in mind the following:

  • Motorists will not be required to pay for a sticker that costs more than the 12-month sticker. The Extended Sticker option is for the convenience of the motorist.
  • Customer service will improve after this season as the Office of the Clerk moves from a six-week vehicle sticker sales program to a 52-week program. It will be a more sensible way to sell 1.3 million vehicle stickers.
  • You can still buy online at ChiCityClerk.com. Online purchasing is the easiest and fastest way to receive your sticker.
  • The grace period is still in effect: Motorists have until July 15, 2014 to comply with the Wheel Tax and purchase their Chicago City Vehicle Sticker.
  • The 2014 Chicago City Vehicle Sticker Renewal forms sent to 1.5 million Chicago motorists outline the purchase options and include the total costs for purchases.

If you have any questions on city stickers, please call City Clerk Mendoza's office at 312-742-5375 or my office.  We will be hosting our 47th Ward Sale at Sulzer Library, 4455 N. Lincoln, on May 31st.  More information can be found on the flyer below.

Fanta Sea Lounge

For several months, a disruptive business has been operating at 2122 W. Lawrence.  My office worked closely with neighbors, the Chicago Police Department and the Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection to bring an end to this public nuisance.  This week, the owners of Fanta Sea surrendered their license.  This is a huge victory for the community, and I want to thank everyone who gave their time and effort to make this happen.  We are making huge investments toward #ANewLawrence, and the closure of this problem establishment is another positive step in realizing the vision for a pedestrian, retail and family-friendly Lawrence Avenue.

Sincerely,
Ameya

Department of Water Management is Hiring

This year, the Chicago Department of Water Management plans to replace 85 miles of water mains, 21 miles of sewer mains and complete 55 miles of sewer lining. They are currently hiring for the following positions:

60 Laborer Apprentices

18 Hoisting Engineers

24 Seasonal Plumbers

8 Operating Engineers A

28 Operating Engineers B

If you are interested in applying for one of these positions, please call the Department of Human Resources at 312-744-4976 or check their website.

Report Graffiti

As the weather turns warmer, we are seeing more graffiti throughout Chicago.  Be sure to report any graffiti to our office (info@chicago47.org, 773-868-4747), 311, or through the Chicago Works app.  You'll need to know the address, type of surface tagged, and whether or not the tag is more than six feet from the ground.  Graffiti that contains profanity, hate language or is done on a church or school receives special attention.

The faster we remove graffiti the less likely vandals are to target that area again.  Thanks for your help!

Arts & Culture in the 47th Ward: Manifold Design & Lillstreet
Weekly Articles by Office Intern Luis Lopez Reichling, Senior at St. Benedict Preparatory School

Manifold Design is a small metal design company that one should note in our community. Founders Ross and Elizabeth Fiersten freshly arrived in our ward in 2012 seeking a more open and "neighborhood friendly" area for their company which has been in existence since 1999. Originally from the Pilsen neighborhood, both Ross and Elizabeth majored in fine arts and wanted to find a different type of designing, one that was more intuitive and not simply focused on manufacturing. The group now does many things besides designing, hosting exhibitions of various artists around the community with one coming up this fall. They have also exhibited some work of The League of Women Designers and are associated with the Object Society, an organization of local designers.

Feel free to drop by and take a look at some of their current exhibitions at 4426 N. Ravenswood Avenue. They have a variety of classes that they instruct every Saturday open to the public. The sessions are four hours long and focus on the art of welding, highlighting the detail and unique finishings of piece made. Newcomers are well so check out their website for more info!

Lillstreet is an art facility that has been a pillar of the local art community since 1973. The company has an interesting history, initially being sold for $1 to founder Bruce Robbins from a clay supplier in Lake Forest. The idea of classes did not come until later and since has become a huge success. They now have classes offering every art form from beginner drawing to advanced metalsmithing. Looking through the catalogue the variety of courses can be a bit astounding with classes such as glass fusing and "dye tea owls workshop." One can be well assured that every interest in any unusual art form can be fulfilled here.

Although Lillstreet's main concern is on the ability of an individual "to invest in themselves, their talent, and explore their creative thinking," they collaborate with various schools and organizations around Chicago, such as Chicago School of Shoemaking and Chicago Hot Glass. The kid's classes are legendary and extensive, with a detailed catalogue available of the numerous classes. These classes are highly flexible with kids being able to take classes for nearly every week in the summer. This arts creation and learning center offers so much to the neighborhood and allows people to explore a wide range of artistic interests. If you have a budding interest in the arts, a great place to start would be here.

Hopefully the Polar Vortex has led to depletion in the rat population in the neighborhood. However, if you want a permanent, non-poisonous solution to rodents in your part of the block - look no further than Tree House Humane Societies Cats at Work Program!   • removal of all Ailanthus, honeysuckle and buckthorn (all invasives);
  • add soil to the rip rap on the upper sections of the project area to make planting easier and recovery quicker;
  • substitute for the elderberry, since we said we have a thriving e-berry community already;
  • substituted a cover seed mix instead of the IDOT mix we objected to;
  • four species of gray dogwood (stakes) that a vigorous colonizers for the new territories.

These will be substantial new lands, with the bank secured, and planting begun. Riverbank Neighbors will be able to enrich species diversity over time and introduce many new forbs. Habitat for birds and reptiles and amphibians and mammals will be greatly improved.
