March 28, 2014
 On this day in 1924, WGN-AM in Chicago begins radio transmissions.

Dear Neighbor,

Today, my office met with the Chicago Department of Transportation and the Department of Water Management (DWM) to discuss 2014 capital improvement projects in the 47th Ward. This  annual meeting is a critical step of the aldermanic menu program. My office works with departments to coordinate street resurfacing, alley resurfacing, and water and sewer main replacements with utility projects, streetscape projects, and other major infrastructure projects that require cutting open a street. We've been meeting annually to better coordinate projects to minimize disruptions and save tax dollars. During this meeting, we use 311 service requests related to potholes, street light outages, clogged sewers, etc. to develop a capital plan for the coming year. We use this plan and your vote to make the final decisions about which projects we green-light through the Aldermanic Menu Program.

In April, and after all your votes are counted and our own analysis is completed, my office will release a full listing of the green-lighted projects in the 2014 Aldermanic Menu Program.

One exciting capital project on the horizon is the resurfacing of Ashland Avenue between Irving Park Road and Lawrence Avenue.  The Department of Water Management will be replacing the water mains under Ashland beginning in May and the County will follow thereafter to resurface the street.  This partnership between the City of Chicago and Cook County would not be possible without the work of our County Commissioners John Fritchey and Bridget Gainer.  I also want to thank Commissioner Powers at DWM for his partnership on this effort.  And finally, I want to thank 47th Ward Chief of Staff Jim Poole for working to make this project happen.

More on the Ashland Avenue project soon. Keep an eye on the newsletter for updates.

There is still time to vote on the projects you would like to see completed as part of the 2014 Aldermanic Menu.  Voting has been extended through April 5th.   To see a list of the projects under consideration, please click here.  To cast your vote, please click here

Street Sweeping

The schedule for 2014 street sweeping has been released by the Dept. of Streets and Sanitation.   It is available at chicago47.org.  Sweeping begins April 1st so be on the lookout for the signs.  Arterial sweeping also begins April 1st and that schedule can be found here.  Street sweeping is still being executed along the 2011 ward boundaries.

Have a great weekend!

Sincerely,
Ameya

Arts & Culture in the 47th Ward: The New Colony
A Series of Weekly Articles by Office Intern Luis Reichling, Senior at St. Benedict Preparatory School

What role does theater play in today's world? How can contemporary ensembles engage young urban audiences who are estranged from live performance?  The New Colony, a fresh, dynamic storefront theater group based in Lincoln Square, explores these issues and challenges audiences with intense, intimate performances presented at various Chicago venues. Their current play reWILDing Genius, hosted at the Steppenwolf Garage (theater) on Halsted and North Avenue, is an exceptionally intelligent, relevant, and pioneering work about a group of millennial "hacktivists" who decide to change the world by fighting government and corporate corruption. The original drama is complemented by rich, nuanced character interpretations performed by a cast of bright young Chicago actors.

Now in the midst of its sixth season, The New Colony presented its first play Amelia Earhart Jungle Princess in 2008. Over the years, they have showcased new playwrights and vastly diverse works that explore everything from light comedies about frivolous Hollywood obsessions to high school shootings and the dark side of college fraternities. Their award-winning absurdist comedy Five Lesbians and a Quiche was acclaimed at the New York International Fringe Festival and will be revived this year at the Chopin Theater from May 1st to June 8th. Likewise, this season's productions of Kate and Sam are Not Breaking Up and reWILDing Genius have been warmly received by critics and public.

While the company has offices and rehearsal space in the DANK Haus building, the edgy acting troupe is committed to storefront theater. This is intimate, intense performances in small venues where audiences members are seated steps away from the actors. The safe boundary between audience and stage is markedly absent at a The New Colony performance which can stun those accustomed to the classic theater experience. Another concept fundamental to the company's mission is collaboration. In an ensemble numbering 43 people who premiere mostly original works, actors have full license to develop their characters. The playwright and director function to facilitate stories, while characters and even plot are developed organically as part of a group collaborative process; no single individual owns the outcome. The result is a very alive, nearly improvisational type of theater that is quirky, refreshing, often absurd, and demanding that the audience is present and invested.

The New Colony represents the kind of avant-garde performance that is nearly extinct in most major cities, making Chicago one of the last bastions of innovative theater. Against the odds, their risky endeavor has been largely successful. In addition to performance, they have recently launched an education program for local youth. As only 30% of their revenues come from ticket sales, The New Colony relies on donations to cover most of their operating expenses. They deserve our applause and support. ReWILDing Genius runs through April 20th and their next production Orville and Wilbur Did it! opens June 13th. I implore you to go experience this dynamic local theater ensemble!

Congratulations Timeless Toys

Martha and Harry Burrows have lived in Lincoln Square for over 20yrs. So of course when they decided to become shopkeepers they couldn't think of a better place than in the neighborhood they already called home. Home comes to mind whenever we enter Timeless Toys. At Timeless Toys we find the same wonderful toys, games and puzzles that we had in our home for our children that we now buy for the youngsters in all our lives. None of us can count the hours our children played with wooden animals, puppets and cardboard blocks that are always available at Timeless Toys.

We are officially members of a worldwide movement! Please check out www.repaircafe.org . We'll soon be listed on their website.  So far we will offer the skills of: 2 generally handy-people, 2 sewers (with sewing machines) and a knitter/jewelry repair person. Do you have a skill you'd like to share?

This is a win-win-win-win: people with skills help others, others learn, an item is kept out of the landfill and we all build a greater sense of community in our neighborhood!

Do you know a teen who loves animals and conservation?

The Chicago Zoological Society's is launching its Conservation Scholars Program for the summer! The Scholars Program is an engaging way for teens to learn more about animals and conservation, network with others and make a difference in their communities while preparing for college and future careers.
Students fulfill the program's 120 volunteer hours annually by choosing workshops and other opportunities that fit their schedules and interests, located both in Chicago and at Brookfield Zoo.

After at least one year of successful participation, Scholars are invited to apply for college scholarships and paid positions at Brookfield Zoo, which will be available only to program participants. All these experiences culminate to prepare students for college, to apply for jobs, develop their own action projects, and to become leaders in their communities.

Applications for the Scholars Program are now available here.

A competition to create an APP from Congressman Mike Quigley designed to promote innovation and interest in science, technology, engineering and math fields - invites students to create their own software application for computer, tablet or mobile devices, using whatever platform they choose. The deadline for submissions is April 30. Winners from each participating congressional district will be announced May 15.

Information on how to enter the competition, as well as application development resources can be found here.

Forward Chicago Bridge & Chess Club meets at Sulzer Library on the first and third Fridays of the month from 10:30am to 12pm.  All are welcome.

Thoughts on the Forward Chicago Open Bridge Group at Sulzer from Tana Durnbaugh - When you move to a big city you often expect to find what you had in a smaller town. Surprise! In Lincoln Square I could not find Open Play Bridge. When I talked to Dara she said, "Start one". So we put a note in the Alderman's newsletter. The first time we had no one but me. The second time we had 3 anxious people; one hadn't played in 50 years. The next 3 times we had 5-7people. Fun play! This is real progress. We can keep this up until we get 3 tables then we can become a Club. An Open Bridge Club in Lincoln Square! Maybe we could have tables at Sulzer's Game Night. Maybe we could have a younger table - even a teenage table. Let's keep this great game alive. Come! Play a game that never gets old and is always a challenge. See you the 1st and 3rd Friday at 10am at Sulzer Library. Forward Chicago -Together.

Sulzer needs your old games.  Thanks to our neighbors who have donated games for the Sulzer's Game Night!  If you have games that your family no longer uses, please bring them to the 47th Ward Office or to Sulzer Library. Their ever-popular "Game Night" could use a few more board games like Sorry, Chess, Life, Uno, Jenga, Rummy Cube, etc.

Chicago River Work (east side) Berteau to Montrose (from Riverbank Neighbors)

Please check out this updated landscaping plan for the bank.

New to the plan:

  • removal of all Ailanthus, honeysuckle and buckthorn (all invasives);
  • add soil to the rip rap on the upper sections of the project area to make planting easier and recovery quicker;
  • substitute for the elderberry, since we said we have a thriving e-berry community already;
  • substituted a cover seed mix instead of the IDOT mix we objected to;
  • four species of gray dogwood (stakes) that a vigorous colonizers for the new territories.

These will be substantial new lands, with the bank secured, and planting begun. Riverbank Neighbors will be able to enrich species diversity over time and introduce many new forbs. Habitat for birds and reptiles and amphibians and mammals will be greatly improved.

Horner Park Riverbank Project (from US Army Corps)

Winter conditions are still delaying contractor progress. The exact start date is still pending construction plan approval.
