On this day in 1879, Albert Einstein was born in Ulm, Germany.  Happy Pi Day!

Dear Neighbor,

In May of 2012, my office announced that the 47th Ward's Clark Park would be home to Chicago's first Illinois High School Association (IHSA) playoff regulation baseball stadium! Developing this project and getting it through City Council was a major priority of my first year in office. After a series of meetings with Chicago Public Schools, Chicago Cubs, Kerry and Sarah Wood Foundation, DeVry University, Chicago Park District and the Clark Park Advisory Council, and a year of work and negotiations, we moved legislation in May of 2012 to start construction on the project. Shortly after we broke ground, construction crews discovered environmental contaminants in the soil. The discovery of these contaminants halted construction as we developed a site remediation plan and identified funding to move forward with the remediation plan. Today, I am pleased to announce that Governor Quinn is directing up to $2 million in state funds to remediate the environmental issues at the construction site. What does this mean? Stadium construction will begin soon!  Additionally, we are working with the Mayor's Office to identify additional TIF funds to complete the whole vision for Clark Park.  This follows my commitment to allocating these funds to support public projects in the 47th Ward.

I want to thank Governor Quinn for his steadfast commitment to our ward. In just under three years, Governor Quinn's directed $12 million in state capital funds to parks and schools in the 47th Ward. I also want to thank Senate President John Cullerton, Representative Ann Williams, Congressman Quigley, and Mayor Emanuel for working tirelessly to identify funding for the environmental remediation. I also want to recognize the contributions and leadership of the Clark Park Advisory Council (CPAC). CPAC has been a steward of this park for many years and worked diligently to find a suitable location for the stadium in Clark Park. Thank you!

Here are some FAQ's about this project.

What does IHSA regulation field mean? Today, when our high school baseball teams make the playoffs, these teams' home games are often played away. IHSA regulation fields require stands, a dugout and a mound. Chicago's new stadium will meet all of those requirements. After completion, teams from all over the City will be able to use the stadium.

What about little league programs? Will my kids be able to use the field? Yes. Approximately 75% of the time the park will be used by the public and the Chicago Park District. Twenty-five percent of the time will be for the use of Chicago Public Schools. Youth baseball programs will have access to the field.

Who is supporting this project? Several major institutions helped make this project possible.

Chicago Cubs Charities                                   $1 million

Kerry and Sarah Wood Foundation               $1 million

Turner Construction                                       $700,000

Chicago Public Schools                                   $750,000

Chicago Park District                                      $500,000

City of Chicago/47th Ward TIF                      $1.25 million

2014 Aldermanic Menu Vote

It is time to consider projects for the 2014 Aldermanic Menu.  For those who do not know, each ward receives $1.3 million dollars each year to put toward infrastructure projects.  Back in November we asked you to complete block audits to assess needs in your area.   We received more than 100 block audits this year.

From this year's block audits, we compiled a  list of possible menu projects for 2014.  The items on the list include projects not submitted last year and those identified in this year's audit process.  You have the opportunity to vote on which projects you believe are most needed.  Click here to cast your vote.  You can support as many or as few projects as you would like.  Please share this opportunity with any of your neighbors who may be interested as well.  Voting will be open until March 28th.

While votes are being cast, 47th Ward staff will be assessing each and every area of the ward to identify issues and assess which projects are most needed.  They will look at more than just the projects listed on the vote.  I will use your votes, information collected by my team, 311 data and information from city departments to make the final decision on our projects for 2014.

Thanks for participating in this process.  If you have any questions, please contact Jim Poole at [email protected].

Intern News

Welcome New Intern

We are happy to introduce our newest office intern, Luis from St. Benedict College Prep's Protg Program. An ambitious high school senior with an interest in writing and the arts, Luis will be researching and authoring weekly articles on the culture scene in the 47th Ward. He will be reaching out to the many local theatres and art centers in the North Center, Lincoln Square and Andersonville communities which he feels would benefit from more publicity. Luis hopes you will enjoy reading these articles.

In his first week at the alderman's office, Luis has already updated the 47th Ward Arts, Culture & Recreation Guide (see a list of all our guides here). Let him know how you like it! A unique feature of his internship is that Luis will be splitting his time with Raven Theatre in Edgewater, helping with the technical and educational aspects of Raven's play productions.

Aldermanic Summer Internship

We are accepting letters of interest and resumes from college and graduate students seeking a paid summer internship in our aldermanic office. Applicants must have completed at least one semester/quarter of college during the spring of 2014 in an accredited program and must have proof of residency in Chicago, preferably the 47th Ward, at time of hire. The ten week program runs from June 9 to August 15. We will be making our decision in late April/early May. Email [email protected].

Act Now to Cover Yourself and Your Family

Did you know that there's a new way for you to find the health insurance you need?

Individuals and families in Illinois can now sign up for quality health coverage through Get Covered Illinois by visiting www.GetCoveredIllinois.gov. Through the Marketplace, you can make side-by-side comparisons of health coverage options and find the plan that works best for you, your family and your budget.

All of the plans you'll find through Get Covered Illinois cover important things like doctor visits, hospital stays, prescriptions and more. And you won't be denied coverage if you are sick or already have a condition like asthma, diabetes or even cancer.

You may even be able to get help paying for your plan. For example, if you are an individual who earns less than $45,960 a year, or a member of a family of four that makes less than $94,200 a year, you may be able to get a tax credit to help pay for your health insurance coverage. You may even qualify for a free or low-cost plan.

Sometimes finding the right health plan can be confusing. The good news is that you don't have to figure it out alone. There are specially trained counselors, called Navigators, who are available to help you learn about your choices and enroll for free - online, by phone or in-person. To enroll online or find a Navigator near you, visit www.GetCoveredIllinois.gov.

It's an exciting new state of health care in Illinois. Having health insurance means being there for your family when they need you. With a plan from Get Covered Illinois, you'll know you can get the care you need, when you need it, including free preventive care to help you stay healthy. No one plans to get sick or injured, but if the unexpected happens, you'll now be able to see a doctor or go to the hospital without racking up huge medical bills.

So why wait? Enrollment is open through March 31, 2014. Take the first step to getting covered. To enroll online or find a Navigator near you, visit www.GetCoveredIllinois.gov or call the toll-free Help Desk at (866) 311-1119, open seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

March is Red Cross Month

March is Red Cross Month and the American Red Cross is recognizing everyday heroes who reach out to help their neighbors.These everyday heroes lend a hand to those in need in communities across the country by:

  • Helping people affected by disasters get on the road to recovery.
  • Giving blood to help a hospital patient.
  • Brightening the day of an injured service member who is hospitalized far from home.
  • Stepping forward to assist someone having a heart attack or to save a drowning child.
  • Reuniting families torn apart by war or conflict in other parts of the world.

This March, during Red Cross Month, they're encouraging everyone to discover their inner hero by giving time to help a neighbor, make a financial or blood donation or take a Red Cross class in First Aid and CPR. Here's 4 ways you can join in this effort:

  1. Give blood. Many blood drives were cancelled the first 6 weeks of winter because of the weather. All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. Call 1-800-RED-CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or visit www.redcrossblood.org to make an appointment.
  2. Take a First Aid and CPR class and learn lifesaving skills at www.redcross.org.
  3. Become a Red Cross volunteer. More than 90% of our workforce is volunteers. Since Jan.1 our volunteers helped more than 1,000 people in our 13-county region after home fires. They also taught First Aid classes, hosted blood drives, visit with military member and veterans and much more. Get started here: www.redcross.org/support/volunteer.

  4. Be prepared for and respond to disasters and other life-threatening emergencies. Download the Red Cross apps for First Aid, tornadoes and more at  www.redcross.org/prepare/mobile-apps.

For full information on where this service will be provided, please click here.  The closest site to the 47th Ward is Truman College at 1145 W. Wilson.

We're all Irish this weekend! Celebrate in the Neighborhood.

We are officially members of a worldwide movement! Please check out www.repaircafe.org . We'll soon be listed on their website.  So far we will offer the skills of: 2 generally handy-people, 2 sewers (with sewing machines) and a knitter/jewelry repair person. Do you have a skill you'd like to share?

This is a win-win-win-win: people with skills help others, others learn, an item is kept out of the landfill and we all build a greater sense of community in our neighborhood!

Forestry crews have been hard at work removing dead and dying trees. The Ash trees will receive a systemic treatment by this fall. The red metal disc that you will see on Ash trees indicates that it has been treated. Multiple trees were taken down on some blocks in our neighborhood, like 2500 block of Hutchinson. We are working to identify funds to be used to bolster tree replacement in areas of the ward that have been hit particularly hard.

Chicago River Work (east side) Berteau to Montrose (from Riverbank Neighbors)

Please check out this updated landscaping plan for the bank.

New to the plan:

  • removal of all Ailanthus, honeysuckle and buckthorn (all invasives);
  • add soil to the rip rap on the upper sections of the project area to make planting easier and recovery quicker;
  • substitute for the elderberry, since we said we have a thriving e-berry community already;
  • substituted a cover seed mix instead of the IDOT mix we objected to;
  • four species of gray dogwood (stakes) that a vigorous colonizers for the new territories.

These will be substantial new lands, with the bank secured, and planting begun. Riverbank Neighbors will be able to enrich species diversity over time and introduce many new forbs. Habitat for birds and reptiles and amphibians and mammals will be greatly improved.

Horner Park Riverbank Project (from US Army Corps)

Winter conditions are still delaying contractor progress. On 17 March the contractor will start installing vision screening on the fence around the site and begin marking of trees which will be removed, and those removed and reused elsewhere on site. The exact start date is still pending construction plan approval.
