Dear Neighbor,

I am pleased to announce that my office, Mariano's Fresh Market, the Taxman Corporation and Barrett & Porto Real Estate are launching a FREE senior bus service starting November 6, 2013. The bus will take residents of Martha Washington, Belle Plaine Commons and Mary Hartwell Catherwood apartments, and seniors from the Senior Satellite Center located at the Saint Vincent DePaul Senior Residences to Mariano's Fresh Markets. Previously, the City of Chicago funded a grocery bus service but the service was cut as part of the 2010 budget. Since taking office, I have regularly scheduled town hall meetings at our senior residential facilities. One issue that remained consistent among all residents was the loss of the bus service in 2010.  Since taking office, my office has been working creatively to restore this service.

The Ravenswood Station retail center project will bring a new Mariano's Fresh Market and LA Fitness to Lawrence & Ravenswood. The team at Mariano's Fresh Market and Barrett & Porto Real Estate and the Taxman Corporation (the development team) were interested in reaching out and establishing themselves as great neighbors in our community. And, since we knew a grocery bus service was a need for seniors in our community, we were able to make this great connection and re-instate a wonderful community service. The FREE bus service will pick up seniors every two weeks and take them to the Mariano's Fresh Market on Western & Roscoe and drop them back off once their shopping is complete. After the Ravenswood Station retail development is completed, bus riders will have two Mariano's Fresh Markets to choose from.

I want to thank Mariano's Fresh Markets, Bob Mariano, Tim Barrett, Gene Porto (Barrett & Porto), and Sy Taxman for their commitment to our community.

For over two years, the Senior Council of the 47th Ward Office has been working to identify ways to restore this grocery bus service and I want to thank them for their hard work. They take on other critically important issues as well, like working to save the #11 Lincoln bus and creating programs that allow our residents to age-in-place. Each year the Senior Council hosts multiple holiday and community luncheons which serve over 500 people at each event, organize and promote a health and wellness fair with free immunizations, and outreach regularly to seniors in our community. If you would like to get involved in the Senior Council please contact Dara Salk at the 47th Ward Office. Finally, I want to thank Dara Salk and Jim Poole for putting this bus service together. It would not be possible without their hard work.

On a final note, Happy Halloween everyone! Families and children will be out and about trick-or-treating tonight. Drivers and cyclists: please take extra precautions while riding and driving. STOP at every stop sign and DO NOT COME TO A ROLLING STOP.  For more safety tips, please click here.

Sincerely,
Ameya

2013 Street Sweeping
The 2013 Street Sweeping Schedule is now available on our website.

Welcome New Business: Zan Atelier, 1625 W. Montrose Avenue

A custom clothing and alterations retailer Zan Atelier has come to the neighborhood. Owner Nazia Zamani is a couturier and fashion designer with over 20 years of experience in high-end custom garment design, construction and alteration. Able to handle even the most delicate materials and complicated alterations, Zan Atelier can design and create clothing for any occasion.

Nazia's passion for fashion and textiles started from early childhood as she loved watched her mother make all the children's clothing. Her first sewing endeavor was no small feat. She created a winter coat from scratch under the guidance and supervision of her mother. Just after high school she started her own custom-made clothing and alterations business. While earning her degree in the Restoration of Antique and Historic Textiles, she designed and altered bridal and evening gowns. In 2003 she left her native Iran to pursue her dream of establishing herself as a fashion designer. In Chicago she completed a B.A. in Fashion Design from Columbia College. After graduation she moved to New York City and worked under well-known designers like Carolina Herrera and Dennis Basso. In 2010, she returned to Chicago to start her own business and had been working from her home studio until last August when she was able to expand into her present storefront space.

Zan Atelier is open every day Monday through Saturday and is closed on Sundays. Store hours are from 10am to 7pm Tuesday through Friday and Saturday and from 2 to 7pm on Mondays. Please call 773-879-6881 or 773-348-8666 to make an appointment.

Coyotes in Chicago

Coyotes are being sighted in the neighborhood.  They have been sighted at multiple locations including along the river, Grace and Lincoln, and Wrigley Field.  For more information on Coyotes, please see our website.  Please know that there has not been a documented attack by a coyote on a human in more than 30 years in Illinois.  If you see an aggressive coyote or one that returns regularly to the same location please report that to our office or 311.

Dara Reports

We are having a spooktacular Halloween here in the 47th Ward!  When driving around the neighborhood please be aware of the many Block Parties. If you and your neighbors are hosting a party please close your street to traffic with very reflective materials. Block Parties TONIGHT are closed to cars, but are still open to trick or treaters. Be Safe and Have Fun!

Little Free Library Coming to Lincoln Avenue I learned about this international movement from neighbor Nate Hutcheson. Take a look at http://littlefreelibrary.org/ . What an irresistible idea! The good folks at the Sun-Times donated an out-of-commission newspaper box to us and now we need to get it ready for its new incarnation as a Little Free Library. Would you help me sand and paint it? "Adopt" your sewers and catch basins.  Keep the tops clear of leaves and litter.

This will cut down on flooding. If the drain appears to be clogged after removing leaves from the surface, and water does not drain within 12 hours of rainfall please call our office so we can get the sewer on the schedule for cleaning.  To learn more about what you can do for storm water management please click here.

As temperature drops the need for coats, jackets, hats, gloves and mufflers become even more crucial for our neighborhood families in need. Remember the wind on those cold morning walks to school?  Please consider donating any of these items for clients of our local pantries. You may drop them off to our office and we will distribute them.

Kidical Mass - Roscoe Village.  Upcoming rides on 11/4 and 12/1.  Meet at Audubon School (3500 N. Hoyne) at 10am for 10:30am departure.  Click here for more information.

47th Ward Infrastructure Update

Check out the infrastructure map on our webpage!

Lawrence Avenue Streetscape

The Lawrence Avenue Streetscape is underway.  We have posted a draft of the streetscape design on our website if you would like to review the details.

Brick paver installation is underway.  Some work on the Claremont Plaza and adjacent alley was delayed to confirm an engineering issue which has been resolved.

Work on the sidewalks continues on the south side of Lawrence, on schedule to be completed to Damen by the end of November.  Next year the project will be completed from Damen to Clark St.  Landscaping features will be installed on the whole stretch in 2014.

Irving Park Streetscape

The last phase of the Irving Park Streetscape is coming to a close. All that remains is some follow-up repairs we have been waiting on. Now that the new lights are on, we are being assured that these last repairs will be made by the end of November. Some remaining planting may take place in the spring.

Water Main for 3800 - 3900 N. Seeley (Grace to Irving Park)

City Crews from the Dept. of Water Management have completed work replacing the 1895 water main under Seeley Ave. from Grace to Irving Park.  Restoration should be completed in the next two weeks.  Parking restrictions will be posted and are enforced during designated times M-F.  To see the residents' notice, please click here .

Western Avenue Roadway Repairs

Western Avenue from George Street to School Street will be reciving spot repairs over the next few weeks. This is part of the Chicago Department of Transportation's Arterial Street Resurfacing - Term North Area Project, in the 47th Ward.

Construction has begun.  The work will include ADA sidewalk, curb and gutter removal and replacement, milling the existing asphalt pavement, asphalt paving, bus pad concrete pavement construction, and pavement markings.

During construction, temporary "No Parking" signs will be periodically installed as required for each activity listed above.  These temporary signs will restrict parking during working hours, while adhering to rush hour restrictions, for the completion of the work.  All work on this corridor is scheduled to be completed by  December 16, 2013.

NOTE: NO DEMOLITION OR REPAIRS WILL BE DONE TO THE OVERPASS AT THIS TIME.  Demolition of the Belmont overpass and reconfiguration of the streetscape has been planned and is awaiting funding approvals.  This is not expected to begin until 2015.
