Dear Neighbor,

Last April, I voted NO on the Chicago Speed Camera proposal. That measure passed City Council 38-11. As a result of the vote authorizing the installation of cameras city-wide, the Chicago Department of Transportation has entered into a contract with American Traffic Solutions.

Over the next few months, speed cameras will be installed in our community. The first two locations are:

  • Welles Park at 2333 W. Sunnyside Avenue
  • Lane Tech High School at 2501 W. Addison Street

Here are some answers to the frequently asked questions on the speed camera program:

Ok, to start two cameras are being installed in our community. Where else around the city are they being installed?

Click here to view a map produced by ABC7-Chicago.

What days and times are the speed cameras in effect?

For cameras near schools, the cameras are enforcing speeds during school hours and on school days. School days are Monday through Friday and the hours are from 7 am to 4pm.

What is the speed limit during school hours?

The speed limit during school hours on school days is 20 MPH.

What is the speed limit on school days after school hours?

After 4pm on school days, the speed limit is 30 MPH.

What about parks? What are the enforcement hours?

The cameras near Welles Park will be operational seven days a week from 6am to 11pm. The speed limit near parks is 30 MPH.

How much are the fines?

Once the cameras are installed, and for the first 30 days, motorists will receive warnings for speeding. The first violation a motorist receives will also be a warning. Second and subsequent violations result in the following:

  • $35 for vehicles traveling 6 to 10 miles per hour over the posted speed limit while in a safety zone
  • $100 for vehicles traveling 11 or more miles over the posted speed limit

I hope these FAQ's answered some of your questions. Please feel free to contact us if you have anymore at info@chicago47.org. For more information on the speed camera program, please click here

Finally, I want to invite you to German-American Fest this weekend.  The fest kicks-off tomorrow, September 6 from 5pm to 11pm continues Saturday, September 7 from 12pm to 11pm and wraps up on Sunday, September 8 from 12pm to 10pm.  Also, remember that the 48th Annual Von Steuben Day Parade will step off from Lincoln and Berteau at 2pm on Saturday.  Be mindful of parking restrictions and street closures on Lincoln, Leland, Eastwood, Western and Lawrence in relation to this event.  Hope to see you there!

Sincerely,
Ameya

Seen Rats?  Take Action TODAY!

Rat Logo The battle against rats continues in Chicago, and the Bureau of Rodent Control is on the front-line.  Thanks to modern sanitation these critters no longer pose the health threat they did in days gone by, but we all still need to do our part to limit their population.  Limiting food sources is crucial so cleaning up after that backyard barbeque, keeping pet food inside, closing your garbage cart/dumpster, and picking up after pets are the easy ways we can do our part to limit the rodent population.

Don't wait for the problem to be severe before making a baiting request.  Call 311, the 47th Ward Office, or use the city's website to make a request to have your area baited and/or to replace a damaged blue or black cart.  Baiting is done based on calls for service, and the problem will not go away on its own.  If you're getting rats inside your home, please consider hiring a private exterminator so they can determine the point of entry and help you address the issue.  In addition to city services, Treehouse runs the 'Cats at Work' program that is a proven way to control the rodent population.  Please click here for more information.

If you have any questions, please contact Jim Poole in the 47th Ward Office at jim@chicago47.org

Friends of the Chicago River's Canoe Trips

Have you always wanted to canoe along the Chicago River - the western boundary of the ward!?

Saturday September 7th -11AM - 3PM - Downtown Canyons - If you missed the 6/29 trip definitely sign up for this one; it's a spectacular trip.

Saturday September 28th - 6PM - 10PM - Moonlight Paddle - The premier trip we offer. Paddle out into the Skokie Lagoons as the sun sets. See lots of wildlife; including all three species of heron and possibly even cormorant, all native to our area. After a stop on land to hear the story of how the Lagoons were made and a snack, you'll get back in your canoe and paddle back to the launch site under the moonlight. It's a truly magical night. Friends Canoe Program is unique in that each trip is led by trained canoe guides. Before getting in the boat you'll receive safety & paddling instructions. Then when you're on the water, the guides will offer you paddling advice, assistance, answer questions about the ecology or history of the area, and ensure your safety.

By taking these tours, you're supporting the ONLY non-profit that is working to make the Chicago River one of the world's greatest metropolitan rivers. 47th Ward Infrastructure Update

Check out the infrastructure map on our webpage!

Lawrence Avenue Streetscape

The Lawrence Avenue Streetscape is underway.  We have posted a draft of the streetscape design on our website if you would like to review the details.

Work on the sidewalks has begun on the north side of Lawrence at Damen working to Western Ave. and back to Damen by November.  Most of the walkway section of the sidewalk from Damen to Leavitt is completed and curb and gutter is being installed along with the ADA ramps.  In the next week they will be moving west of Leavitt on to Western Avenue before crossing to the south side and making their way back east to Damen. Next year the project will be completed from Damen to Clark St.

Irving Park Streetscape

The last phase of the Irving Park Streetscape, removing the old streetlights and quality control repairs to pavers and final curb repairs will begin over the next few weeks.  This was delayed due to an electrical issue that has since been resolved. The project should be fully complete before November 1st.

Berteau Neighborhood Greenway

City Crews from the Dept. of Transportation are working on completing sidewalk repairs and traffic calming installation along Berteau between Lincoln and Clark.  The resurfacing of Berteau between Ravenswood and Ashland will take place beginning next week.  The final phase of the Greenway will be installing the contraflow bike-traffic light eastbound at Damen and adding street markings and reduced speed and wayfinding signage. We expect all work to be complete by October.

Water Main for 2000-2220 W. Berteau (Bell to Damen)

City Crews from the Dept. of Water Management will begin work replacing the 1894 water main under Berteau Ave. from Bell to Damen.  Parking restrictions will be posted and are enforced during designated times M-F.  To see the residents' notice, please click here.

Water Main for 2000-2100 W. Hutchinson (Damen to Lincoln)

City Crews from the Dept. of Water Management will begin work soon replacing the 1897 water main under Hutchinson St. between Damen and Lincoln.  Parking restrictions will be posted and are enforced during designated times M-F.  To see the residents' notice, please click here.

METRA Traffic Closures and Detours Around Ravenswood Avenue

  • Leland Ave Full Closure will be up until April, 2014.
  • Ravenswood from Lawrence to Leland Ave Full Closure will be up until April, 2014 on the west side of Ravenswood.
  • Ravenswood (east side) Ave from Ainslie to Winnemac Full Closure through September 28, 2013
  • Ravenswood (west side) from Irving Park to Grace Full Closure while wall panels are installed until October 11, 2013

Parking restrictions and detours may be re-opened, when possible, and re-closed once work is ready to resume. Walsh Construction is continuing to work with our office to minimize closures and parking restrictions, and reduce their construction footprint as much as possible while getting their work done.
