Dear Neighbor,
Did you know the 47th Ward Office also doubles as a community art gallery? For two years, OpenWall has been curating the walls, windows and sometimes even the ceiling of the 47th Ward Office. Every three months OpenWall works with a different group of artists on a new show to spotlight local art. Following each installation, OpenWall hosts an art opening at the ward office. So what is OpenWall?
I will let OpenWall's amazing curator Patricia Larkin-Green answer the question:
"OpenWall gives me an opportunity to create something meaningful for our community. I had been trying to figure out a way to make art more accessible, and this just landed in my lap. I am a firm believer that artists need a supportive community because as artists we are most vulnerable when we are taking risks. Artists need to create, to exhibit and see each other's work. Just imagine the possibilities! When talking with Ameya about what he had in mind, he said: 'this is how transparency looks to me, I want the office to be a place where people feel they can come inside and interact. The walls are for the Artists."
This month we have an amazing collection featuring art created from recycled materials. I encourage you to stop by and take a look. Most of the art is for sale - if you like a piece, you can contact the artist and purchase directly from them. I've purchased something from every show -- my place is finally starting to look nice! Stop by and check out the latest show. To learn more about OpenWall, please click here. I also want to thank Patricia, the entire OpenWall committee, all the artists, and Ernie Constantino for dedicating hundreds of hours of their time to make OpenWall a reality.
SAVE THE DATE - I am pleased to announce that on Friday, October 4, 2013, our community's very own Black Ensemble Theater is partnering with my office to host a 47th Ward Night to present, "The Curtis Mayfield Story." All 47th Ward residents will receive discounted $40 tickets to the show. Join me at 7pm for a cocktail hour and an informal meet and greet. The show begins at 8pm. We will have more information in the coming weeks. I hope to see you there!
Have a safe and happy Labor Day weekend!
Sincerely,

Seen Rats? Take Action TODAY!
The battle against rats continues in Chicago, and the Bureau of Rodent Control is on the front-line. Thanks to modern sanitation these critters no longer pose the health threat they did in days gone by, but we all still need to do our part to limit their population. Limiting food sources is crucial so cleaning up after that backyard barbeque, keeping pet food inside, closing your garbage cart/dumpster, and picking up after pets are the easy ways we can do our part to limit the rodent population.
Don't wait for the problem to be severe before making a baiting request. Call 311, the 47th Ward Office, or use the city's website to make a request to have your area baited and/or to replace a damaged blue or black cart. Baiting is done based on calls for service, and the problem will not go away on its own. If you're getting rats inside your home, please consider hiring a private exterminator so they can determine the point of entry and help you address the issue. In addition to city services, Treehouse runs the 'Cats at Work' program that is a proven way to control the rodent population. Please click here for more information.
If you have any questions, please contact Jim Poole in the 47th Ward Office at jim@chicago47.org.
