August 22, 2013
The 47th Ward Office will be CLOSED on Friday,  August 30 and Monday, September 2

On this day in 1942 Ray Bradbury, author of Farenheit 451, was born in Waukegan.

Dear Neighbor,

I'm happy to announce that we have had our most successful 47th Ward School Supplies Drive yet! On Tuesday, we delivered two full car loads of backpacks, notebooks, binders, paper, pens, pencils, calculators and other essential supplies to Ravenswood Community Services and Common Pantry. The supplies will be distributed to local families in need. Thank you so much for all the very generous donations!! Special thanks to the generous and creative folks who gathered with neighbors, co-workers, parent groups, and fellow parishioners to collect our largest donations of school supplies yet. Children at 1920 Warner set up a lemonade stand to benefit the School Supply Drive.  Also, I want to say a very big thank you to James C. from the 47th Ward (St. Ben's 4th Grader) who volunteered for the difficult job of sorting the supplies and dividing them up for distribution.

School Supply Pictures

Every year more and more of our residents and businesses have been planting native plants in their parkways and yards. Native plants (for a description see our webpage) or plants that have evolved in our region are best able to survive drought, disease, pests and climatic conditions. Because are also best at keeping the ground permeable with their deeper root structures and absorbing water, they are nicknamed "rain gardens;" indeed they will be used as part of the Lawrence Streetscape to reduce stormwater flooding at the corners.

NNA Native Corner Garden

I am also happy to announce that the Department of Streets and Sanitation (DSS) is taking steps to ensure that property owners who have native gardens on the public way or on their property will not be ticketed for weed violations in the City code. While tickets have never been given to native plantings in the 47th Ward, there are some areas of the city where tickets have been issued erroneously and resulted in major fines to owners of native gardens. Please be aware that DSS will continue to ticket abandoned and uncared for properties, but native gardens that often look very different from traditional lawns and gardens are protected. Also, DSS will now require inspectors to attempt to make contact with property owners before issuing a ticket, and have given them training to identify these gardens. The City's Law Department will be flagging weed cutting tickets for a second look to ensure no homeowners are ticketed incorrectly for their gardens.

A big thank you to Streets and Sanitation Commissioner, Charles Williams, and his team for taking these steps to help ensure that native gardens continue to thrive in our beautiful city. And, as always, thank you to Erick Norton, the 47th Ward Superintendent, and his team, for keeping our neighborhoods so beautiful.

Sincerely,
Ameya

Welcome New Business: Everlasting Fire Studio

Everlasting Fire Studio

Everlasting Fire Studio at 5036 N. Lincoln Avenue is having a grand opening on August 24, Saturday from 5 to 9PM. They offer a variety of art classes with their main and primary focus in Lampwork glass. This method involves melting rods of glass at table mounted torches to create beads, and small sculpture work. Their space is for current Lampworkers to come in and explore, as well as those unfamiliar to come and learn. They want to bring Lampworking to the public in a way that creates a true community here in Chicago. Their passion is lampwork, but they have their own other interests that they bring to the space as well. Along with classes in Lampwork, they offer some in other select art forms. They also provide a small gallery section of their space where they sell work from artists both from their studio, and locally. They hope to provide a little something for everyone.  For more info, check out their website or call 773-728-2071.

Mosaics on Montrose: The Unveiling

Ravenswood Mosaics Since last April and throughout the summer, about 30 Ravenswood students - mostly third through fifth graders in an afterschool class and a summer camp activity - have been working with mosaic artist Rochelle Borrett  to create a public art installation on the large planters along the north edge of the school grounds on Montrose Avenue. The project was coordinated through ArtReach, the non-profit arm of Lillstreet Art Center and funded in part by Friends of Ravenswood School , in an effort to express the strength of Ravenswood's art programs to the surrounding community. Themes for each of the two planters are "The Arts" and "The Elements," in student designs inspired by the collages of Henri Matisse. A public unveiling of the planters will coincide with Ravenswood's annual Back-to-School Barbecue on Thursday, August 29, at 5:45 p.m. More information about the project can be found here .

Chicago Treekeepers "Trim Up" Lincoln Avenue

Lawrence Avenue Streetscape

The Lawrence Avenue Streetscape is underway.  We have posted a draft of the streetscape design on our website if you would like to review the details.

Work on the sidewalks has begun on the north side of Lawrence at Damen working to Western Ave. and back to Damen by November.  Most of the walkway section of the sidewalk from Damen to Leavitt is completed and curb and gutter is being installed along with the ADA ramps.  In the next week they will be moving west of Leavitt on to Western Avenue before crossing to the south side and making their way back east to Damen. Next year the project will be completed from Damen to Clark St.

Divvy Bike Kiosk Installations

The first 5 of about 20 locations in the 47th Ward will have Divvy Bike kiosks installed and operational by Monday (some are already in place). These include:

  • Damen Brown Line (north of Leavitt)
  • Montrose Brown Line (on Ravenswood)
  • Irving Park Brown Line (on Ravenswood)
  • Lincoln and Leavitt (at Sulzer Library)
  • Western Brown Line (in Plaza)

Irving Park Streetscape

The last phase of the Irving Park Streetscape, removing the old streetlights and quality control repairs to pavers and final curb repairs will begin over the next few weeks.  This was delayed due to an electrical issue that has since been resolved. The project should be fully complete before November 1st.

Berteau Neighborhood Greenway

City Crews from the Dept. of Transportation have marked out sidewalk repairs and traffic calming installation along Berteau between Lincoln and Clark.  Construction on these has begun and will be completed by September 1st after which the resurfacing of Berteau between Ravenswood and Ashland will take place.  The final phase of the Greenway will be installing the contraflow bike-traffic light eastbound at Damen and adding street markings and reduced speed and wayfinding signage. We expect all work to be complete by October.

Water Main for 2000-2220 W. Berteau (Bell to Damen)

City Crews from the Dept. of Water Management will begin work replacing the 1894 water main under Berteau Ave. from Bell to Damen.  Parking restrictions will be posted and are enforced during designated times M-F.  To see the residents' notice, please click here.
