Dear Neighbor,
My office is working with the 47th Ward's Common Pantry and Ravenswood Community Services to collect school supplies for students in our community. The school supply drive runs from July 29 to August 19. You can drop off supplies at the 47th Ward Public Service Office at 4243 N Lincoln Avenue during business hours. The supplies we collect will be distributed by the Common Pantry and Ravenswood Community Services. I hope you will join me in supporting this effort.
I am also pleased to announce that the Banfield Charitable Trust and Royal Canin are donating 25,000 pounds of pet food to the Friendship Pet Food Pantry which will open soon in the new Lincoln Square Friendship Center (a new food pantry supported by local churches). The donated pet food will be distributed to the clients of the three food pantries in the ward: Lincoln Square Friendship Center, Common Pantry and Ravenswood Community Services. A portion of this pet food will also be given to Care for Real, the Bark Bark Club, Found Chicago and foster homes for rescued animals who are awaiting their forever homes. Nationwide food pantry usage has surged 25% since 2008, and while many food producers, grocery stores and individuals have increased giving, there are very few pet food pantries. We are very grateful for this generous amount of donated pet food as it will keep hundreds of families from having to surrender their beloved pets or having to choose who in the family goes hungry. Many thanks to Banfield Charitable Trust, Royal Canin, and the Friendship Pet Food Pantry.
Have a great weekend!
Sincerely,
|

Welcome New Business! Cookie Bar, 1746 W. Wilson
We are proud to announce the arrival of Chicago's first gluten-free bakery in Ravenswood! Joe Bova and Jeff Steinberg co-owned and operated the popular bakery in a previous location in Lincoln Park. After selling out of the few gluten free treats they were making for requesting customers, they were inspired to go with an entire gluten-free menu. Wanting to be closer to home they have now made Ravenswood their mainstay, and Cookie Bar is now a 100% gluten-free establishment. Since opening on July 18th, these two have been concocting everything from rich coconut layer cakes and fresh made cinnamon spiced donuts, to delicious cranberry macadamia nut cookies, all gluten-free!
The owners enthusiastically explained the benefits of gluten-free foods compared to alternative wheat containing foods. "Recently more people are adopting gluten-free diets, the benefits are infinite, so it just made sense!" Recent concern about genetically modified wheat products entering US food supply has caused a spike in gluten-free diets. Countries such as Japan, and Korea have gone as far as banning US wheat imports altogether. Another concern is celiac disease, which is an autoimmune disorder caused by gliadin, found in wheat and wheat products. It currently affects 1 in 10 Americans and is only remedied by a lifelong gluten-free diet. "We not only sleep better at night, but have also lost weight from adopting a gluten-free diet."
Joe and Jeff mentioned that most other bakeries producing goods with no gluten typically use tasteless ingredients such as nut flower or soybean. They were also proud to mention that Cookie Bar uses more flavorful, even healthier, ingredients such as amaranth and quinoa!
Cookie Bar is located at 1746 W. Wilson between Ashland and Ravenswood Ave., next to Fin sushi restaurant. Their hours are limited, only open Thursday, Friday, and Saturday 12-5pm, but said they will hopefully be extending them at a later date. Cookie Bar also distributes their unique treats on a wholesale level to popular chains like Whole Foods. They will do "reasonable" requests for special occasions or corporate events, so don't hesitate to ask or email them at www.cookiebaronline.com. The shop is small but just enough space for one to pop in and grab a delectable yet "healthy" treat on the go!

The Tree House Working Cats Project is a "green" program that relocates sterilized, vaccinated feral cats-that would otherwise have been euthanized-to locales that have problems with rats and mice. Rodents are repelled by the cats' scent, and leave areas with cats. Most cats will hunt and catch rodents on occasion, but if they are fed regularly, cats usually won't eat them. Traditional methods commonly used to control rats tend to be short-term and not permanent solutions. Many involve poison, which is dangerous to pets and the environment.
To see a fact sheet on the program, please click here. If you are interested in learning more about how you can adopt some working cats, please contact Treehouse's TNR Hotline at: 773-784-5488 ext. 234 or kari@treehouseanimals.org.

- Know your neighbors: party together, garden together, share tools, and offer to help.
- Have a Block Party in the summer, for Halloween and a Christmas Potluck at a Park Fieldhouse.
- Form a Block Club or a Neighborhood Group - we can help.
- Join the "Friends of your local school" - even if you don't have children there.
- Kids can earn money babysitting, shoveling, taking in mail for neighbors on vacation, walking a dog after school. A 10 yr. old can be a "mother's helper" for a younger child on the block after school while the parent is home.
- Create an email list and phone tree (for those without email), to stay in touch with neighbors.
- Email & phone folks as a reminder about street cleaning. Knock on doors if cars are on the street close to 9am.

- Talk to each other about situations & solutions for your area. Let us know about them.
- Don't leave toys, bikes and strollers outside. Lock doors and windows when you're out.
- Install motion detector lights in your gangway or yard and backs of garages.
- Walk around the neighborhood more. Consider positive loitering. Hang out on your front porch.
- Suspicious people hanging around or knocking on doors, especially after dark? Call 911. Email & activate the phone tree
- Clear leaves & debris from the curb line and tops of sewers routinely.
- If there is standing water in your gutter for more than 24 hours, call us to report it or 311
- Low branches hanging over the sidewalk or stop sign? Clip them; Forestry is working on 2011 requests.
- Tell everyone to sign-up for the 47th Ward Newsletter - it's a great way to stay informed!
- Please help us add to this list - call or send in suggestions.
Bring in Your Old Linens. When you clean out your linen closet please think of the abandoned pets who are awaiting their forever homes at local shelters and foster homes. Bring us your old towels, blankets and sheets and we will deliver them.
Sulzer needs your old games. Thanks to our neighbors who have donated games for the Sulzer's Game Night! If you have games that your family no longer uses, please bring them to the 47th Ward Office or to Sulzer Library. Saturday August 17th - 10AM - 4 PM - North Branch - Paddle the Ralph Freese Trail starting at Willow Road and paddling through the prettiest sections of the Forest Preserves down to Linne Woods just north of Dempster St. (This route was by far, my favorite trip!)
Saturday September 7th -11AM - 3PM - Downtown Canyons - If you missed the 6/29 trip definitely sign up for this one; it's a spectacular trip.
Saturday September 28th - 6PM - 10PM - Moonlight Paddle - The premier trip we offer. Paddle out into the Skokie Lagoons as the sun sets. See lots of wildlife; including all three species of heron and possibly even cormorant, all native to our area. After a stop on land to hear the story of how the Lagoons were made and a snack, you'll get back in your canoe and paddle back to the launch site under the moonlight. It's a truly magical night. Friends Canoe Program is unique in that each trip is led by trained canoe guides. Before getting in the boat you'll receive safety & paddling instructions. Then when you're on the water, the guides will offer you paddling advice, assistance, answer questions about the ecology or history of the area, and ensure your safety.
By taking these tours, you're supporting the ONLY non-profit that is working to make the Chicago River one of the world's greatest metropolitan rivers. To register on line go to www.chicagoriver.org or call Friends of the Chicago River at 312-939-0490, X10. For more information contact Claire Snyder at 312-939-0490, Ex 14. csnyder@chicagoriver.org.

47th Ward Infrastructure Update
Check out the infrastructure map on our webpage!
Lawrence Avenue Streetscape
The Lawrence Ave. Streetscape will be starting construction in the coming weeks. Currently surveying and preparatory work is being done on the electrical system and removal of buried, outdated street car tracks. Once the roadway is restriped and traffic light timing is complete work on the sidewalks will begin on the northwest corner of Damen and Lawrence and head west on the North side of the street to Western Ave.
Note: there will be NO MEDIAN PLANTERS. While some work is being done in the middle of the street, there is a rumor that has come up that there would be median planters such as on Irving Park or Ashland. We have posted a draft of the streetscape design on our website if you would like to review the details. There may be slight variations but the project will include:
- 3 traffic lanes (east, west, and center bi-directional turn lane)
- improved stop light timing
- marked bike lanes
- widened sidewalks with landscaping and permeable pavers
- bump-outs narrowing pedestrian crossing distance
- intersections without turn lane requirements there may be pedestrian islands
- improved crosswalk timing
- over 200 trees along the sidewalks
- improvements to Claremont Plaza
- pedestrian friendly alley connection to Giddings Plaza
Work on the sidewalks will be begin on the north side of Lawrence at Damen working to Western Ave. and back to Damen by November. Next year the project will be completed from Damen to Clark St.
