Dear Neighbor,

Happy summer!

Thank you for all the invitations to block parties and events. I look forward to attending as many as I can! This weekend is a busy one and I hope you will be able to join me at one of the following:

Neighborhood Boys & Girls Club Carnival

The 65th Annual Neighborhood Boys and Girls Club (NGBC) Family Festival starts tonight. The carnival supports NGBC programs and activities. I've had the pleasure of working with the NGBC to start a bike safety camp and neighborhood cleanups. In addition to partnering with my office, the NGBC offers a diversified athletic, social, recreational, cultural, computer, tutoring, leadership and scholarship program for boys and girls 6 to 18 years old. Simply put, the NGBC is part of the bedrock of our community that keeps kids safe and active. So join me this weekend and play some games, ride the rides and enjoy the live music. I will be serving beers on Saturday night. For more information on the carnival please click here. See you there!

Chicago Hunger Walk

The Greater Chicago Food Depository (GCFD) is hosting the 28th Annual Hunger Walk this Saturday, June 29, at Soldier Field. I will be walking and I hope you will join me! This is an opportunity to walk with your neighbors, family and folks from all around Chicagoland to help support organizations in our ward working to eliminate hunger. I hope that you will join me on Saturday.

Chicago Pride Parade

This Sunday, June 30, I will be walking in 44th Annual Chicago Pride Parade with many of my friends and colleagues. Legislators from all levels of government are marching in solidarity to support everyone's right to marry who they love. It is time for Illinois to pass Marriage Equality.  See you Sunday!

Sincerely,
Ameya

CTA Bus Re-Routes for Blackhawks' Celebration

About 30 bus routes will be affected at various times this Friday beginning early morning through midday. The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) will offer additional train service in conjunction with the City of Chicago's celebration of the Blackhawks' 2013 Stanley Cup victory in Grant Park beginning Friday morning, June 28. Customers traveling into the Loop on Friday are advised to allow plenty of travel time due to street closures, traffic congestion and reroutes. CTA's Red and Blue subway lines and Brown, Green, Pink and Orange elevated lines are the best option for Blackhawks fans heading downtown for the parade and rally.  For more information on specific routes that are affected please click here.

Have you always wanted to canoe along the Chicago River - the western boundary of the ward!?

Friends of the Chicago River's Canoe Trips
  •
  • Saturday June 29th - 11 AM - 3 PM - Downtown Canyons - Paddle up the South Branch for one of the most spectacular views of the skyline and into the downtown canyons.
  • Saturday August 17th - 10AM - 4 PM - North Branch - Paddle the Ralph Freese Trail starting at Willow Road and paddling through the prettiest sections of the Forest Preserves down to Linne Woods just north of Dempster St. (This route was by far, my favorite trip!)
  • Saturday September 7th -11AM - 3PM - Downtown Canyons - If you missed the 6/29 trip definitely sign up for this one; it's a spectacular trip.
  • Saturday September 28th - 6PM - 10PM - Moonlight Paddle - The premier trip we offer.  Paddle out into the Skokie Lagoons as the sun sets.  See lots of wildlife; including all three species of heron and possibly even cormorant, all native to our area.  After a stop on land to hear the story of how the Lagoons were made and a snack, you'll get back in your canoe and paddle back to the launch site under the moonlight. It's a truly magical night. Friends Canoe Program is unique in that each trip is led by trained canoe guides.  Before getting in the boat you'll receive safety & paddling instructions.  Then when you're on the water, the guides will offer you paddling advice, assistance, answer questions about the ecology or history of the area, and ensure your safety.
