Happy Summer Solstice!

Dear Neighbor,

I am excited to announce that this Sunday, June 23rd, we will be unveiling an honorary street sign at the northwest corner of Lawrence and Ashland (4800 north). The purpose of this sign is to honor an enormously respected and admired  former resident of this block, Sergeant Saul Joseph.

  Sgt. Joseph

Sgt. Saul Joseph was born to Assyrian immigrants fleeing persecution in Iran who made Chicago their home. He grew up during the Great Depression dealing with the many struggles of the era. As Joseph grew into adulthood, he joined the National Guard. By the time the United States became involved in the Second World War, he was a member of the 131st Infantry Regiment which later formed the 320th Infantry Regiment. Joseph's most recognized achievement in his military career was his service in the Battle of the Bulge; this was after recovering from an injury for which he received a Purple Heart. Sgt. Saul Joseph was also later awarded the Silver Star and the Bronze Star before being honorably discharged in May of 1945.

After his military career, Sgt. Joseph returned home to the 47th Ward with a strong desire to serve his community. He donated his time and worked with many community organizations that worked with veterans. In addition to his community work, Sgt. Joseph spent 25 years working for the Chicago Park District at the Lincoln Park Zoo's Reptile House as a senior zoo keeper. He also was the longest serving member of The Assyrian American Association of Chicago and was an active member of his church.  A modest man, he never wanted recognition and always cared for the well-being of his fellow veterans and the people in his community.

Sgt. Joseph left behind a tremendous legacy of duty to country and neighborhood. This Sunday would have been Sgt. Joseph's birthday. In order to honor Sgt. Joseph's service,  we are installing an honorary street sign bearing his name. The sign will be unveiled this Sunday, June 23, 2013,  at 1:00 PM at the northwest corner of Ashland and Lawrence Avenue. Please join us along with Sgt. Joseph's friends and family (who still live in the same home)!

Finally, I want to thank Sgt. Joseph's grandson, Saul J. Joseph, for working so hard with our office to make this honorary street sign possible.

Sincerely,
Ameya

New in our office!  Our Summer Intern!

Our aldermanic summer intern is Ian Reeves, a freshman at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Ian has lived in the 47th Ward his entire life by the Chicago River. In fact, he and his family helped maintain and beautify the river as part of the Friends of the River advocacy organization. After graduating from Northside College Prep High School in 2012, Ian entered UIUC and is now a rising sophomore majoring in political science with minors in business and Spanish.

Ian's resume includes some interactive experiences. During the summers in high school, he volunteered with the Chicago Park District at Independence Park serving as a counselor's assistant in the special recreation campers program and later was hired as special recreation leader. Another summer he worked for After School Matters at the Warren Park soccer program, coaching mainly Hispanic 6 to 9-year-olds in the fundamentals of soccer.

We're excited to have Ian working in our office learning "the ropes" of a full-service local government facility. He will be working with the staff on reaching out to our over 1,500 businesses and non-profits in the 47th Ward. This will include a survey of business needs that will be conducted both electronically and via paper-and-pencil. Alderman Pawar has asked Ian to attend a number of our community meetings to understand how we work with residents on achieving consensus on potentially controversial issues. And we have invited Ian to write a column for our newsletters, beginning next week, about his projects in the office. Welcome to the office Ian!

Dara Reports
Please be conscious of your neighbors this weekend and on all hot days this summer. If you see a house where all of the windows are closed and you don't hear an air conditioner, call or knock on the door - just to check to see that all is well.

Big Thanks to City Clerk Susanna Mendoza & her hard working team for selling city stickers for 5 hours non-stop last Saturday. Hundreds of vehicle owners were helped right here in our neighborhood.  Thanks also, to Barbara Chalko of the State Treasurer's I-Cash Services. While folks were getting their city stickers, Barbara did 91 searches through personal savings and other accounts and recovered money for 34 people!

Planning to have a Block Party this Summer? Consider holding it on one of the following Sundays if you would like a chance of getting the Jumping Jack!

Friends of the Chicago River's Canoe Trips
  •
  • Saturday June 29th - 11 AM - 3 PM - Downtown Canyons - Paddle up the South Branch for one of the most spectacular views of the skyline and into the downtown canyons.
  • Saturday August 17th - 10AM - 4 PM - North Branch - Paddle the Ralph Freese Trail starting at Willow Road and paddling through the prettiest sections of the Forest Preserves down to Linne Woods just north of Dempster St. (This route was by far, my favorite trip!)
  • Saturday September 7th -11AM - 3PM - Downtown Canyons - If you missed the 6/29 trip definitely sign up for this one; it's a spectacular trip.
  • Saturday September 28th - 6PM - 10PM - Moonlight Paddle - The premier trip we offer.  Paddle out into the Skokie Lagoons as the sun sets.  See lots of wildlife; including all three species of heron and possibly even cormorant, all native to our area.  After a stop on land to hear the story of how the Lagoons were made and a snack, you'll get back in your canoe and paddle back to the launch site under the moonlight. It's a truly magical night. Friends Canoe Program is unique in that each trip is led by trained canoe guides.  Before getting in the boat you'll receive safety & paddling instructions.  Then when you're on the water, the guides will offer you paddling advice, assistance, answer questions about the ecology or history of the area, and ensure your safety.
