HAPPY FLAG DAY!

Dear Neighbor,

In partnership with City Clerk Susana Mendoza, we will have a city sticker sale SATURDAY, June 15th from 9:30am to 2:00pm at the Sulzer Library, 4455 N. Lincoln Ave.  Please be sure to bring your renewal notice, state vehicle registration, or other official document that lists your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN).  This is a new requirement for 2013 as the city transitions to year-round sticker sales.  Residential permit parking daily passes will also be sold during this event.

Hunger Walk

The Greater Chicago Food Depository (GCFD) is hosting the 28th Annual Hunger Walk on June 29 at Soldier Field. I will be walking and I hope you will join me! This is an opportunity to walk with your neighbors, family and folks from all around Chicagoland to help support organizations in our ward working to eliminate hunger.

Here is how the walk works. Every person who walks on June 29 will raise $12 for a pantry. For every $12 raised, GCFD is able to provide the pantry of your choice with $20 worth of food. Think about it; you can get some exercise, spend time with family and friends, and help one of three amazing organizations in our community!

You can register by clicking here. When you register, please make sure to include the agency registration code so that organization receives your support. The agency codes are listed below.

  • Common Pantry (#A00003)
  • Ravenswood Community Services (#A00462)
  • North Park/Lincoln Square Friendship Centers (#A00055)

I hope that you will join me on June 29th. See you there!

School Visits

Audubon Banner Last week I had the opportunity to visit with third graders at Audubon Elementary. Students worked together to develop slideshows, short films and skits to lobby me to vote for Alderman Joe Moreno's Plastic Bag Reduction Ordinance. Audubon students put together wonderful presentations on the environmental impact of plastic bags. Here are some key facts from the students' research:

  • Nearly every plastic bag that has ever been manufactured still exists today.
  • There is a large floating garbage patch in the Pacific Ocean that some estimate to be twice the size of the continental United States and much of the garbage floating in this patch is plastic.
  • Plastic bags are ingested by marine life which contributes to thousands of deaths annually.

Audubon Kids and AP Audubon students did a great job convincing me to vote to ban plastic bags. The result is that I will be voting YES to ban plastic bags in Chicago.

Because of their excellent advocacy skills, Audubon students will be present at the June 18th City Council Committee on Health and Environmental Protection Committee hearing on the Plastic Bag Ban Ordinance! Their presence at the hearing will go a long way to ensure we have enough votes to pass this ordinance.

This week I visited Ravenswood Elementary with Senate President John Cullerton to help kick off their annual World's Fair Festival. In the weeks and months leading up to the World's Fair, each grade is assigned a country. The students study the culture, music, government and food. Next, they work collaboratively to produce presentations, arts & crafts, and tasty food! Each classroom was transformed into a different country and they did an incredible job! I learned a lot from my visit. It is amazing to see students from pre-K all the way to the eight grade working together to study different countries and cultures. You can learn more about the Ravenswood Elementary World's Fair by clicking here.

Sincerely,
Ameya

WorldChicago Needs Host Families

This summer, WorldChicago is receiving three groups of international students who are in Chicago to participate in a youth leadership program, practice their English, and live with an American family to learn more about the culture. They are coming from Mexico, the United Kingdom, and Iraq, on an international exchange sponsored by the U.S. Department of State. They are currently looking for host families to receive these youth for periods of 10 days to 2 weeks in July 2013. Host families are generous volunteers who welcome our international youth into their family life. WorldChicago provides
participants with daily activities on weekdays (approximately 9AM-5PM), lunches, phones, and public transportation passes. On weekends you are encouraged to show your host student around our beautiful city of Chicago! Hosts provide a bed and most breakfasts and dinners for their guest(s).

If you're interested or want to know more, please email Shanti Freitas, Program Manager of WorldChicago, at sfreitas@worldchicago.org or visit their website.

Waters School is one of 10 finalists for a $75,000 green school makeover.  Our school was selected out of hundreds of applicants nationwide  by Global Green USA, and now they are looking for pubic input to help them narrow it down.  This link allows you to cast your vote.  Please click and show your support for Waters!

Congratulations to Waters Mathletes! They ranked 2nd in our Region of Illinois. We are so proud of the Waters students and Mr. Gil for taking on this awesome educational program.

Volunteers have been hard at work painting and cleaning the new space that will be Lincoln Square Friendship Center and Friendship Pet Food Pantry.  Thanks to all of you who have generously donated many items that are necessary to open the doors of the Center; hopefully by September!

Still needed: coffee mugs for volunteers and visitors, clothing racks and bins for the clothing & housewares sections. Coffee, tea, office supplies and cleaning supplies will always be needed and are much appreciated donations.

Would you like to get involved in the new Center? There are many ways to do that: volunteer for a weekly shift, if you know of a teenager who needs community service hours this is a good way to earn them, have a food or pet food drive at work or your children's school or scout troop, take on a specific volunteer position, or collect pet food monthly from donation sites. There are many ways to support the Center, our neighbors and pets.  For more info: lincolnsquarefc@gmail.com.

Our 47th Ward Gardening Workshop was doubly informative. We heard from dedicated tree-lover John Friedmann about the Emerald Ash Borer. Most important: Are there white or green ash trees on private property on your block? If so, please alert your neighbors to the impending loss of their tree unless it is treated. There are reputable companies who will give a group discounts. Have questions? www.saveyourash.org  has answers.

We learned about invasive beetles from Bob & Scott experts who work for APHIS. If you see an unusual looking beetle, please let them know.  (847) 699-2450

Essanay Internship. The Essanay Centers for Early Film at St. Augustine College, 1345 W. Argyle Street, a historic restoration and reuse initiative at the Essanay Studios is seeking student interns to support the Center's development. For more info, please click here.

Volunteer Service in 47th Ward. Are you looking for a rewarding and enjoyable way to be involved and serve your community? Do you like talking to people and helping them find solutions to problems? If you have a morning or afternoon a week, please volunteer and join us in the 47th Ward Service Office.

Bring in Your Old Linens.  When you clean out your linen closet please think of the abandoned pets who are awaiting their forever homes at local shelters and foster homes. Bring us your old towels, blankets and sheets and we will deliver them.

Sulzer needs your old games.  Thanks to our neighbors who have donated games for the Sulzer's Game Night!  If you have games that your family no longer uses, please bring them to the 47th Ward Office or to Sulzer Library. Their ever-popular "Game Night" could use a few more board games like Sorry, Chess, Life, Uno, Jenga, Rummy Cube, etc.
