Dear Neighbor,

The weather is finally warming up and major projects around the 47th Ward are moving forward. This week I want to announce a few new projects. All of these projects required zoning changes and I want to thank the 47th Ward Zoning Advisory Committee, block clubs, and neighborhood organizations for working with me and my office to help inform my decisions.

Band of Bohemia 4710 N. Ravenswood Avenue - My office has been working on this project with the prospective owners for over a year and I can't wait for them to open! This new brewpub will feature craft beers, wine and offer a great menu. The facility will also brew beer on-site. I am very excited about this new concept as we continue to revitalize the Lawrence Avenue corridor. With the construction of the Mariano's/L.A. Fitness, the new Metra station and the Lawrence Avenue streetscape, I expect a full transformation of Lawrence Avenue over the next couple years. My vision is to connect Lincoln Square to Andersonville via Lawrence Avenue and with the addition of Band of Bohemia we are one step closer!

BOB Picture

Chicago Soccer Center - 3700 N. Talman Avenue- This new soccer facility will be home to youth and adult soccer leagues and from time-to-time serve as a practice facility for the Chicago Fire. I've heard from many parents about a lack of indoor sports facilities in Chicago and I believe this project will help fill this gap. The Chicago Soccer Center will include eight indoor and outdoor soccer fields as well as an inflatable dome for winter weather play. This project when combined with the Goldfish Swim School, Chicago Youth Lacrosse and Lil Kickers Chicago will add to the recreational facilities already available in our community.

Exciting new developments on Ashland Avenue - Along with the developments on Lawrence Avenue, my office has been working to bring new business and development to the Ashland Avenue corridor. A new Italian restaurant from the owners of Zia's will be opening at 3819 N. Ashland Avenue. Additionally, the folks from Tango Sur will be opening a new concept at 3938 N. Ashland Avenue. And today, I am pleased to inform you that a new mixed-use (ground floor retail with residential) project was approved for zoning by my office at 3956 N. Ashland Avenue. The project is located at the south-west corner of Irving Park and Ashland. I am excited about this project because the site has been uninhabited for years and we've been rejecting fast food/drive-thru concepts at that location for months. Near this intersection, I also approved the concept for a new and improved Piggery that will include a rooftop patio and expanded space.

As always, you can review all pending zoning cases on the 47th ward website. Click here to see all pending zoning cases.

Also, please remember that the Ravenswood Run 5k is this Sunday at 8am! There will be parking restrictions along the route for the duration of the race (until 10am Sunday) so please be aware of all the NO PARKING signs throughout the Ravenswood and Lincoln Square neighborhoods. Additionally, due to construction along Hermitage and Ravenswood, the course will take a different direction this year, so please take a moment to check out the new course in the article below. Thank you to all the runners for supporting our community and Ravenswood Community Services!

Have a great race and a great weekend!

Sincerely,
Ameya

Emerald Ash Borer Update

In coordination with three nearby wards and the City's Bureau of Forestry, a meeting was held this week at Lane Tech High School to discuss to impacts of the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB). For those who remember the Dutch Elm disease and Asian Long-Horned Beatle infestations of years past, losing a large number of trees changes the character of entire neighborhoods. Seeing the recent devastation caused by the EAB in Michigan, Indiana and already some of the Chicago Suburbs, we need to work fast. Chicago has already lost about 10,000 ash trees to this pest and there are many more trees in jeopardy. There are approximately 85,000 ash trees in the City's public area that are in danger from EAB. This summer the Bureau of Forestry will be inoculating 35,000 of them and the rest will be inoculated next year. The bad news is that many are already infected and will have to be removed and dealt with in a way that won't spread EAB further.

Aside from trees on City of Chicago property, there are over 400,000 ash trees in parks and school properties, in peoples yards and on private property that are potential in need of inoculations. The inoculation costs the City approximately $40 per tree, but for private residents it may cost quite a bit more. One thing you can do as a neighborhood or block club is to identify ash trees on your private properties and ask about a bulk-rate from an arborist or landscaping company that can administer the inoculation. Similarly for schools and park lands, And the community is also looking to adopt the ash trees in schools and park lands in order to fund their inoculation. We will post more information as we receive it in our newsletter, but you can also find out more at http://saveyourash.org/  - under their FAQs they have guidelines on identifying trees that are affected.

Bike Share Job Positions

Chicago's new bike share system, Divvy (www.divvybikes.com), is scheduled to launch this summer (see Jon Hilkevitch article). With roughly 100 jobs to be created, Divvy is looking over the next few months for assemblers, stagers, inventory specialists, placement team members and bike techs. Click here for more information.

Welcome New Business: Child's Play Touring Theater

Child's Play Logo Child's Play Touring Theatre has joined Chicago's North Center neighborhood with their new space at 4161 N. Damen and is holding an Open House on Saturday, May 4, welcoming people to stop by and learn more about the organization. The troupe's actors will be on hand to lead acting and improvisational games for young ones, and to perform. Doors are open from 2:00 to 5:00 pm.

Child's Play is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization theater arts-in-education organization dedicated to inspiring and encouraging children's creativity. Through writing workshops, school residencies, afterschool programs, performances and camps, the company guides children through the process of writing original stories and poems, and then performing those stories on stage in productions complete with music, scenery, costumes and props.  "Our goal at Child's Play is to help children understand the value and significance that writing and reading has on their lives. Our performances and workshops offer a powerful teaching tool that strengthens and enhances the teaching and learning process, while exciting young minds, building new skills and creating confidence, while still having fun," says June Podagrosi, Executive Director.

A goal of Child's Play this year is to promote their peace initiative through workshops and performances. Workshops will focus on having children write about how kids can make a difference in the world by helping others, creating feelings of peace, and fostering support within their communities. Words such as trust, care, respect, fairness, responsibility and citizenship will be examined. This workshop is called, "Be a Peace of the Puzzle."  Performances will follow a storyline built from the resulting mix of children's stories and poems and set to music, billed as "Piece by Peace", which will reflect the children's thoughts and ideas.

A benefit to raise funds for the peace initiative will be held on Thursday, June 13, at the law offices of Holland & Knight, 131 S. Dearborn St., Chicago. Cook County State's Attorney, Anita Alvarez, will be honored at the event for her work on anti-violence and safety initiatives. Also, honored is long-time Child's Play supporter, George Howe, a composer, lyricist and cabaret performer. This event also includes a Child's Play performance. Tickets and more information can be found at cptt.org.

Child's Play has a long history in Chicago, moving  here in 1982 after being founded in 1978 in Champaign, IL. The staff is comprised of professionally trained actors who tour throughout the United States and includes notable alumni such as Andrew McKay, Jeff Richmond, and Tina Fey. The troupe has performed in prestigious venues such as The Goodman Theatre, Ravinia, Brooklyn Academy of Music, Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, Smithsonian Institute, and Navy Pier. To date, they have reached an audience of over 4 million children, educators and adults and performed the works of over 16,000 young authors.

Property Tax Assistance
From Cmsr. Fritchey: Property Tax Relief

Governor Pat Quinn signed legislation Tuesday that will reduce property tax bills for seniors across Illinois and raise the general homestead exemption for Cook County starting next year. This new legislation is designed to soften the blow caused by the sunset of the 7% Expanded Homeowner Exemption, which was originally designed to provide relief from rising home values before the economic downturn.

Although homeowners will continue to automatically receive the benefits of the standard Homeowner Exemption when the 7% provision expires, they will see increases in their bills when it is gone. This legislation will offset this loss by increasing the savings currently received from the Homeowner and Senior Exemptions.  Senior homestead exemption. The legislation raises the senior homestead exemption from $4,000 to $5,000 - potentially saving seniors up to more than $200 annually. I am happy to report that seniors in my district will have the increase applied to their second-installment tax bill for 2012, scheduled to be sent out this summer. Counties outside of Cook will benefit from the increase beginning next year.

General Homestead Exemption. This new legislation is designed to soften the blow caused by the sunset of the 7% Expanded Homeowner Exemption.  Cook County currently has a seven percent exemption cap, while the rest of the state maintains a flat exemption rate of $6,000. The new law moves Cook County to a flat exemption rate of $7,000 beginning taxable year 2012.

Oak Trees available for planting.  It is time again to plant trees, and if you have a space for a new tree on your property, Waters Elementary School is offering some saplings for free.  The ancient burr oak trees that grace the property produce a bounty of acorns every fall, and the squirrels kindly plant them for us.  They intend to return to these acorns for food in the winter, but they lose some of them-and those acorns sprout!  That means that Waters has an abundance of small bur oak trees to offer for you to plant in your yard or parkway this spring.  If you would like one, contact Pete Leki at petelekisan@gmail.com or Mark Dawson at msjddawson@sbcglobal.net.  You can also contact our office.

Bring in Your Old Linens.
When you clean out your linen closet please think of the abandoned pets who are awaiting their forever homes at local shelters and foster homes. Bring us your old towels, blankets and sheets and we will deliver them.

Sulzer needs your old games.  Thanks to our neighbors who have donated games for the Sulzer's Game Night!  If you have games that your family no longer uses, please bring them to the 47th Ward Office or to Sulzer Library. Their ever-popular "Game Night" could use a few more board games like Sorry, Chess, Life, Uno, Jenga, Rummy Cube, etc.
