The 47th Ward Office will be OPEN Tomorrow, April 6 1pm-4pm

Dear Neighbor,

Happy Cubs season! The home opener is this coming Monday and the first night game is Tuesday. Note parking restrictions will be in effect. If you live or have a business in the LV-2 area and have not yet obtained your LV-2 pass please visit our office during the week or this Saturday, April 6th, from 1 to 4pm. Information on the LV-2 area and requirements for an LV-2 pass can be found on our website.

We invite you to help us celebrate Earth Day by participating in Chicago's citywide "Clean & Green" on Saturday, April 20th. This volunteer clean-up effort has been taking place throughout Chicago for over two decades and is great way for us to have immediate impacts on the health and beauty of our neighborhoods. Various projects will be taking place in the 47th Ward, such as the riverbank clean-up, and the electronic, metal and paper recycling collection at the 47th Ward Streets & Sanitation yard. For information on these and additional projects in the 47th Ward OR to organize your own initiative please contact Dara in our office by April 12th. If you would like to host your own initiative (like readying corners for spring plantings) we will help you obtain the necessary tools. Please see the flyer below for more information.

Please note that our next 47th Ward Council meeting will be held Wednesday, April 17th, at 6:30pm at Bethany Retirement Home, 4950 N Ashland Avenue. During the first part of our meeting Cook County Commissioner Bridget Gainer will be in attendance to discuss issues facing the county, and answer any questions regarding taxes, pensions or any other topics of interest. During the second part of our meeting we will be going over all the 2013 Aldermanic Menu items. We will show you how the voting was tallied and which infrastructure projects we have chosen to complete throughout the ward with the $1.3 million in aldermanic menu money. We hope to see you there!

Finally, as a member of Governor Quinn's Illinois Innovation Council, I am pleased to announce that the IIC released a report with exciting news for the first quarter of 2013. Some highlights include:

  • The Chicago metro area is among the top ten metropolitan areas in the nation for research and development expenditures at educational institutions.
  • The Chicago area received over $2.3 billion in research and development funding.
  • In 2011, nearly $730 million were loaned to small businesses via the Small Business Administration.
  • Illinois' broadband related workforce is ranked fifth in the nation

Have a great weekend.

"Potholepalooza" Hits Chicago This Weekend

Tired of Drivin 'N Cryin' in Traffic over the Minor Threat of potholes in the Pavement?  Ready to see nothing but The White Stripes on the roadway and not worry about The Cars swerving to avoid potholes?

This weekend, if you are motorist or a Motörhead, participate in the first-ever "Potholepalooza,"  the Chicago Department of Transportation's (CDOT) call to Chicagoans to report as many street potholes as possible.  Then watch the show next week as CDOT has The Cure for your Moody Blues and fills all of the potholes reported from Friday, April 5 through Sunday April 6 so that your car doesn't do the Harlem Shake and give you Divine Fits.

Thus far in 2013, CDOT crews have filled nearly 250,000 potholes with asphalt, Rolling Stones and Tar, with as many as 27 crews out on the street each day.  In March, Men at Work gave Blood, Sweat and Tears to fill more than 116,000 holes with more than 1,200 tons of patching material, creating Nirvana for many drivers, and in the first week of April have addressed nearly 20,000 more, making roadways fit for the Queen.

This show won't sell out, and even Wallflowers can have fun. and report potholes to CDOT through not just one Tool, but a number of venues, including:

"We are making great progress in filling potholes this spring, but we need Chicagoans to help us identify all of the locations where work needs to be done," said CDOT Commissioner Gabe Klein. "This weekend surge in reporting will allow us to address as many potholes as possible until we switch many of the pothole crews to street resurfacing in a couple of weeks."
Jumping Jack Form Now Available

If you haven't applied for your block party yet, we've included it in the application packet.
April Adoptables
Chicago Plays! Program

Of 523 playgrounds located within the Chicago Park District, 300 have been identified as more than 15 years old and in need of replacement.  In a partnership with the Chicago Park District and Friends of the Parks is launching a community application to select 35 parks in 2013 to be replaced with brand new equipment! For more information please visit the Friends of the Parks website or CLICK HERE to download the application.

CTA's Ventra Fare Card System

Our office has been working with the CTA on finding out what the new Ventra fare card system is about. There will be no difference in terms of transit use however paying in cash for a single-use card will have an added cost of 50˘, bringing the fare with transfer to $3.00. Single payment on a reusable Ventra card or direct debit will remain $2.25 + 25˘ transfer and single-use day passes will not have the additional fee. If you receive a discounted fare now, you can continue to receive this same discount.

From what we understand, the fees that have come into question are only associated with the use of a Ventra cards as a pre-paid debit card, just as you would have with any debit card. Some of the initially proposed fees were adjusted or removed. Remember that using the Ventra Card as a debit card is an option and is not mandatory. In fact, many customers will be able to sign up to use their own debit cards issued by their banks if it has the right technology built in and will not use the Ventra card itself. There are some good FAQs on the CTA Ventra website. We are keeping a close eye on all of this and we will work to make sure 47th Ward residents are informed with accurate information.

Good Deeds Appreciated

  • A kind man on the 4400 block of Marshfield has been seen sweeping up cigarette butts and other trash in the alley that didn't make it into the black cart. Clean alleys are important to us and keep rats at bay.
  • A woman from the 2000 block of Cullom currently in the hospital is being visited by her neighbors. They are already creating a plan for her meals when she gets home. As a member of the first graduating class of Amundsen High School, everyone loves to hear what life was like in the neighborhood "back in the day." I'm told it's the annual block party that has created this level of caring on their block. This is just one example of how thoughtful neighbors are in this ward.
  • Thanks to the Michigan State University Alumni in Chicago who are partnering with Ravenswood Elementary School to participate in a spring clean-up on April 13 as part of their National Service Day.
  • Thanks for all the donations! Sulzer Library patrons are having more fun now with a new supply of games and Famous Fido's rescue dogs are enjoying the 5 bags of bedding we delivered there this week. Please keep the donations coming.

Block Parties this Summer. The socially active neighbors on the 2400 block of Hutchinson have some easy tips for creating a block party that isn't a ton of work. A simple plan where everyone on the block can get involved is a perfect way to build a strong community on your block. If you are looking for ways to start, organize or add to a block party, or if you would like to share what you do, please get in touch.

Northcenter in Chicago Magazine. Check out the April Chicago Magazine Insider's Guide. Northcenter is featured as "bursting with homey eats and cozy cultural attractions!" Thanks Chicago Mag for recognizing one of the premier neighborhoods in the city!

Spring Clean & Green. Please take a look around your neighborhood. Do you see any projects that a willing group of volunteers could start or even complete during our ward clean & green? Or if you would like help with spring clean-up in your garden or if you would like to adopt-a-corner, April 20th is the time to do it. There are neighbors who are available to help that day. Please let me know!

Bring in Your Old Linens.
When you clean out your linen closet please think of the abandoned pets who are awaiting their forever homes at local shelters and foster homes. Bring us your old towels, blankets and sheets and we will deliver them.

Sulzer needs your old games.  Thanks to our neighbors who have donated games for the Sulzer's Game Night!  If you have games that your family no longer uses, please bring them to the 47th Ward Office or to Sulzer Library. Their ever-popular "Game Night" could use a few more board games like Sorry, Chess, Life, Uno, Jenga, Rummy Cube, etc.
