The 47th Ward Office will be closed Friday, March 29th

Dear Neighbor,

Spring is here! I am looking forward to warmer temperatures and spending more time outside. This week I want to provide information regarding a threat to many of our trees. The Emerald Ash Borer insect is predicted to infest and kill many ash trees this year. There are tens of thousands of ash trees located in our parkways and in your yards. Inoculation is the only way to protect our ash trees. Here are some answers to frequently asked questions:

What is the Emerald Ash Borer and what does it look like? The emerald ash borer (EAB) is an exotic beetle from Asia that was discovered feeding on ash (Fraxinus sp.) trees in southeastern Michigan in 2002. EAB is responsible for killing over 20 million trees in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Maryland and Canada. Beetle larvae feed under the bark and outer sapwood of the ash tree, producing galleries that eventually kill branches and entire trees.

Emerald Ash Borer

How many ash trees are there in Chicago and what do they look like? In Chicago, ash makes up around 19% of the City's street tree population or about 97,000 trees. When adding an estimated 500,000 ash trees from private property to the total, ash trees are one of the most common trees in the City.

Ash Tree

If the EAB is killing so many trees then why are we still planting new ash trees? The City of Chicago prohibits the planting of new ash trees. The Bureau of Forestry prohibited ash tree planting starting in 2003.

Can I call the Bureau of Forestry about ash tree questions? Yes. The Bureau of Forestry is currently surveying ash trees in search for the EAB. If you suspect you have emerald ash borer please call 311 or the beetle hotline, 312-74BEETL (312-742-3385).

How can I identify an ash tree? My office will be hosting a community seminar with Ald. Mell. At this seminar, we will bring forestry experts in to provide you with information on how to identify ash trees, discuss inoculation, etc.

Is the City of Chicago going to inoculate all ash trees? The City is going to attempt to inoculate half of the ash trees located in the parkways this year and half next year. This does not include ash trees on private property.

What about ash trees located on my property? Property owners can inoculate their trees. The City of Chicago will only inoculate trees located in the parkways.

Who should I hire to inoculate my tree? The City has identified certified arborists with the Illinois Arborist Association. Click here to find a certified arborist near you.

How much does it cost? It varies but on average it costs about $200 to $500 to inoculate a tree. We are hoping to bring the cost down by inoculating a large number of trees at once.

I want to learn more about EAB and steps I can take to protect trees in our community. How can I get involved?  Please join us at the community seminar on the EAB. We are planning this meeting with Ald. Mell and we hope you can attend. Our hope is to organize a community-wide effort to combat the EAB. The larger meeting will be on April 24th at Lane Tech High School and we will provide info in the newsletter in the next couple of weeks.  In the meantime, we are hosting a meeting on identifying Ash trees.  See the flyer below for more information.

Sincerely,

Ameya

CTA's Ventra Fare Card System

Our office has been working with the CTA on finding out what the new Ventra fare card system is about. There will be no difference in terms of transit use however paying in cash for a single-use card will have an added cost of 50¢, bringing the fare with transfer to $3.00. Single payment on a reusable Ventra card or direct debit will remain $2.25 + 25¢ transfer and single-use day passes will not have the additional fee. If you receive a discounted fare now, you can continue to receive this same discount.

From what we understand, the fees that have come into question are only associated with the use of a Ventra cards as a pre-paid debit card, just as you would have with any debit card. Some of the initially proposed fees were adjusted or removed. Remember that using the Ventra Card as a debit card is an option and is not mandatory. In fact, many customers will be able to sign up to use their own debit cards issued by their banks if it has the right technology built in and will not use the Ventra card itself. There are some good FAQs on the CTA Ventra website. We are keeping a close eye on all of this and we will work to make sure 47th Ward residents are informed with accurate information.

Chase Park Community Garden Applications Now Open

Applications for plots in the Chase Park Community Garden are now open, and more information can be found here. The deadline is April 5th, applicants will be notified by April 11th whether they have been awarded a plot. In an effort to avoid people paying for a plot before they are actually approved for one this year, the process has been separated. Anyone interested in applying can enroll in the "Community Garden Plot Application," and approved applicants will be emailed so that they can continue on with the "Plot Reservation". At that point they will sign a liability waiver and submit a $25 plot fee. Beginning this year, garden participants will be allowed to return for two years and then will be returned to the lotterly system to allow new people to have the opportunity to garden. Chase Park has one of the most popular community gardens within the park district, and the wait list each year is very long. Contact Kristin LeBourveau with questions or to request a paper application.
