Dear Neighbor,

Since taking office, I have been working with community organizations and concerned residents to develop programs and initiatives for 47th Ward seniors. After a series of meetings, Dara Salk and our many amazing volunteers created the 47th Ward Senior Council. This council organized senior luncheons, art openings and holiday sing-alongs. As these great events took place, we also started thinking about developing an effort to keep older residents active and socially-involved year-round, an effort that would help us to build a more resilient community. And so the Senior Council spent months developing a community-based approach to engage and support older residents.

Our 47th Ward Senior Council members began documenting the needs of seniors, researching existing services and putting together a plan for our ward. The Senior Council took a for-profit "village" model and flipped it on its head. The result is Forward Chicago, the first free online community for seniors. Seniors in our community can visit the Forward Chicago site to find out about special events, news, neighborhood happenings, etc. and how to connect to one another.

Last weekend, the Chicago Sun-Times had a great write-up on Forward Chicago. To read the article, please click here. The work of the 47th Ward Senior Council and Forward Chicago has attracted local and national attention. In fact, this afternoon, I participated on a panel at the American Society on Aging national conference. I was joined by Forward Chicago and national experts on aging. I want to congratulate and thank Karen Kolb, Helene Wineberg, Dara Salk and the entire Forward Chicago team for working so hard to develop this program.

Happy St. Patrick's Day and have a great weekend!

Sincerely,

Ameya

Are You Interested in Hosting an Exchange Student?
This summer, WorldChicago is receiving three groups of international students who are in Chicago to participate in a youth leadership program, practice their English, and live with an American family to learn more about the culture. They are coming from Mexico, the United Kingdom, and Iraq, on a international exchange sponsored by the U.S. Department of State. They are currently looking for host families to receive these youth for periods of 10 days to 2 weeks. Host families are generous volunteers who welcome international youth into their family life.  WorldChicago provides participants with daily activities on weekdays (approximately 9AM-5PM), lunches, phones, and public transportation passes. On weekends you are encouraged to show your host student around our beautiful city of Chicago! Hosts provide a bed and most breakfasts and dinners for their guest(s).

If interested or want to know more, please email Shanti, Program Manager of WorldChicago, at sfreitas@worldchicago.org or visit their website.

Chase Park Community Garden Applications Now Open

Applications for plots in the Chase Park Community Garden are now open, and more information can be found here. The deadline is April 5th, applicants will be notified by April 11th whether they have been awarded a plot. In an effort to avoid people paying for a plot before they are actually approved for one this year, the process has been separated. Anyone interested in applying can enroll in the "Community Garden Plot Application," and approved applicants will be emailed so that they can continue on with the "Plot Reservation". At that point they will sign a liability waiver and submit a $25 plot fee. Beginning this year, garden participants will be allowed to return for two years and then will be returned to the lotterly system to allow new people to have the opportunity to garden. Chase Park has one of the most popular community gardens within the park district, and the wait list each year is very long. Contact Kristin LeBourveau with questions or to request a paper application.

Theatre Night at Lake View High School

ECHOES IN THE HALLS is an ensemble- and student-created production that addresses the daily experiences of high school students in today's society.

The play is an emotional lens through which we view the students' observations on school, teachers, love, sexuality, urban violence and family. All of these experiences are presented in dramatic as well as comedic scenarios with dialogue, music, song and multi-media presentations.  Please note that sensitive and mature material will be discussed.

A neighborhood performance will be on March 21 from 5:30-7pm.  Admission is free to those students in good standing who hold a current Lake View H.S. ID. $2.00 for adults.  Enter on Irving Park.  Administration reserves the right to refuse admission.

P&B with Shovels Thanks to Paige & Ben! They helped a neighbor shovel snow during the recent snow fall.  Their willingness to pitch-in is one example of what makes our community such a wonderful place to live.

Lincoln Square Friendship Center.
The Lincoln Square Friendship Center is a new initiative led by many clergy members in the 47th Ward.  During monthly 47th Ward Clergy Meetings several members discussed the need for another pantry to serve the hungry in our area.  Those discussions led them to research and investigate opening a new pantry.

After their initial exploration and research, the group decided to team up with the North Park Friendship Center.  They were 100% ready for a 2nd location and were happy to help the new venture in every way through their relationship with Greater Chicago Food Depository.  There are 5 neighborhood churches that are committed to the new pantry.  Please consider supporting this new initiative aimed at fighting hunger in our community.  Information on the fundraiser can be found below.
