Don't forget to set your clocks ahead one hour THIS Sunday at 2am!

Dear Neighbor,

Even though it's winter, a lot of great development has been taking place in the 47th Ward. My office has been very aggressive in initiating and developing these projects to strengthen our community. Here is an update on a few:

  • We are excited to announce that the Mariano's & LA Fitness project at Lawrence and Ravenswood has broken ground! The project is moving along at a great speed and is on schedule to open February 2014. In this same neighborhood, the first phase of the Lawrence Avenue streetscape is set to begin this June. Please check out our website to view the plans for each project.
  • The Kerry Woods Cubs Field at Clark Park broke ground but the construction was temporarily halted due to some contaminants found in the soil. My office is working with CPS, CPD, the Chicago Cubs and the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency to develop a plan to remediate the soil so that construction can resume as soon as possible.
  • The Clark Park Boathouse construction is progressing well and we will have a better idea of an opening date this spring.
  • The demolition of the old Ravenswood Hospital for the new Lycée Français School is almost complete. The site will be at grade by this summer. Construction on the school is slated to begin in 2014 and be completed by spring 2015 so that students can occupy the building in fall 2015.

As always, thank you for your patience with the various projects in our neighborhoods. It will be very exciting to have all these new additions to our community.  Click here to see all the major projects coming to our community.

Please remember to check the Infrastructure Update section of the newsletter for the latest information on projects happening throughout the ward.  For example, this weekend the westbound lanes of Irving Park will be closed at Ravenswood as part of the ongoing Metra construction.

Have a great weekend!

Sincerely,

Ameya

Notice: Brown Line Service Disruptions

As part of the Chicago Department of Transportation's (CDOT) ongoing reconstruction of the 90-year-old Wells Street Bridge over the Chicago River, the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) will temporarily cease train service on the bridge for two 9-day periods in early March and late April.

  • March 1, beginning at 10 p.m. and resume in time for the morning rush on Monday, March 11;
  • Friday, April 26, beginning at 10 p.m. and resuming in time for the morning rush period on Monday, May 6.

Upgrades to additional track and structures in the area will increase safety and reliability for customers and is part of the CTA's $33.8 million Loop Track Renewal project launched in March 2012. By performing the work while CDOT completes the Wells bridge repairs, CTA will reduce the duration of the work by eight days.  Additionally, combining the work will save CDOT and CTA $500,000 in construction coordination costs.

The CTA has developed a comprehensive alternative service plan incorporating additional bus service, shuttle buses, some rerouted trains, and a Loop shuttle train to alleviate some of the temporary inconveniences for both weekday and weekend riders.

Mayor Emanuel Declares City Hall Open for Small Business

Announces Opening of City Hall Small Business Center as a "One-Stop Shop" For Licenses and Permits; Creates New Chief Small Business Officer Role To Advocate for Small Businesses

Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced this week an overhaul of the way City Hall works with small businesses in order to cut red tape and more effectively support economic development across Chicago's neighborhoods. By opening a new City Hall Small Business Center and streamlining permit and licensing reviews, small business owners and entrepreneurs across the city will have a "one-stop-shop" and dedicated staff working with them every step of the way to support their success. And under the leadership of a new Chief Small Business Officer, Roxanne Nava, City Hall will be equipped to advocate for small business owners and entrepreneurs and ensure policies and procedures are implemented in a way that works for small business.

Theatre Night at Lake View High School

ECHOES IN THE HALLS is an ensemble- and student-created production that addresses the daily experiences of high school students in today's society.

The play is an emotional lens through which we view the students' observations on school, teachers, love, sexuality, urban violence and family. All of these experiences are presented in dramatic as well as comedic scenarios with dialogue, music, song and multi-media presentations.  Please note that sensitive and mature material will be discussed.

A neighborhood performance will be on March 21 from 5:30-7pm.  Admission is free to those students in good standing who hold a current Lake View H.S. ID. $2.00 for adults.  Enter on Irving Park.  Administration reserves the right to refuse admission.

BACP Questions Sessions
Are You Interested in Hosting an Exchange Student?
This summer, WorldChicago is receiving three groups of international students who are in Chicago to participate in a youth leadership program, practice their English, and live with an American family to learn more about the culture. They are coming from Mexico, the United Kingdom, and Iraq, on a international exchange sponsored by the U.S. Department of State. They are currently looking for host families to receive these youth for periods of 10 days to 2 weeks. Host families are generous volunteers who welcome international youth into their family life.  WorldChicago provides participants with daily activities on weekdays (approximately 9AM-5PM), lunches, phones, and public transportation passes. On weekends you are encouraged to show your host student around our beautiful city of Chicago! Hosts provide a bed and most breakfasts and dinners for their guest(s).

If interested or want to know more, please email Shanti, Program Manager of WorldChicago, at sfreitas@worldchicago.org or visit their website.

Dara Reports
Lincoln Square Friendship Center.  The Lincoln Square Friendship Center is a new initiative led by many clergy members in the 47th Ward.  During monthly 47th Ward Clergy Meetings several members discussed the need for another pantry to serve the hungry in our area.  Those discussions led them to research and investigate opening a new pantry.

After their initial exploration and research, the group decided to team up with the North Park Friendship Center.  They were 100% ready for a 2nd location and were happy to help the new venture in every way through their relationship with Greater Chicago Food Depository.  There are 5 neighborhood churches that are committed to the new pantry.  Please consider supporting this new initiative aimed at fighting hunger in our community.  Information on the fundraiser can be found below.

Jam For Bread Fundraiser

Bring in Your Old Linens.
We got a large number of towels and donations this week and they're all headed to a local shelter.  Thanks to everyone who donated.

When you clean out your linen closet please think of the abandoned pets who are awaiting their forever homes at local shelters and foster homes. Bring us your old towels, blankets and sheets and we will deliver them.

Sulzer needs your old games.  Thanks to our neighbors who have donated games for the Sulzer's Game Night!  If you have games that your family no longer uses, please bring them to the 47th Ward Office or to Sulzer Library. Their ever-popular "Game Night" could use a few more board games like Sorry, Chess, Life, Uno, Jenga, Rummy Cube, etc.

Please join us as we continue to plant the seeds for the future of Community Gardening in the 47th Ward.  There is nothing that's more fun than being in the company of kindred spirits who love to garden. We will learn so much, from each other, in our workshops and during our outings. In the past 12 months we visited the American Indian Center's native gardens, Water's Community Garden and Gethsemane Garden Center's greenhouse. We held workshops on corner gardening, seed gathering, caring for city trees, planting with native plants, houseplants and other timely topics.

Whether you are currently gardening, need help or not, or perhaps you have never gardened and would like to but don't have space, or if you are just interested in all that is green, wherever you're at, we want YOU! We will continue our search throughout the ward for additional space for community gardens. At our meetings, we will have forms for rebates on trees, rain barrels, native plants and compost bins, all of which are important to the well-being of the neighborhood. Please bring your thoughts, suggestions and friends to our next Community Gardening Meeting on Thursday March 14 at 6:30pm at Sulzer Library, 4455 N. Lincoln Avenue.

Animal Lovers Wanted. As part of the new Lincoln Square Friendship Center Food Pantry, we are extending our friendship to our neighbors' pets. We are creating a Pet Food Pantry and need your help. If we can help keep one neighbor from having to surrender their pet because they can't afford to feed them, then we will have been successful.

Lawrence Avenue Streetscape Update

The Chicago Department of Procurement Services will soon post bid request for the Lawrence Ave Streetscape project. Their process generally takes 2-3 months so the start date will be delayed until May or June.  We expect the project to stay on schedule, completing construction between Western and Damen by the end of the 2013 construction season, however tree planting and other landscaping will probably be put off until 2014, when they will be starting construction from Damen to Clark.  This will not impact the progress of the Ravenswood Station commercial development or the Metra station project.

Metra Traffic Closures and Detours

  • Leland detours and bridge closure will be up until June 28, 2013.
  • Ravenswood from Lawrence to Leland will have parking restrictions until June 28, 2013.  There is also an ongoing FULL CLOSURE for this duration on the west side of Ravenswood.  Sidewalks will remain open.
  • Foster
    • FULL CLOSURE March 12 - 14 & March 19, 2013.
    • Lane restrictions at Foster March 15 - April 12, 2013.
  • Irving Park
    • Westbound lane restrictions through March 8, 2013.
    • Westbound CLOSURE for demolition TOMORROW March 9 - 12, 2013 & April 1 - 6, 2013
    • Eastbound lane restrictions March 13 - 22, 2013
    • Eastbound CLOSURE March 23, 25 - 30, 2013
Parking restrictions and detours may be opened, when possible, and re-closed once work is ready to resume.   Walsh construction is continuing to work with our office to minimize closures and parking restrictions and reduce their construction footprint as much as possible while getting their work done.
