The 47th Ward Office will be closed on the following City Holidays:
Monday, March 4 (Pulaski Day)

Dear Neighbor,

Please be sure to check the "Infrastructure Update" section of our newsletter.  We have upcoming partial and full closures related to the ongoing work on the Metra tracks along Ravenswood.  I appreciate your continued patience during this project.  Please contact Bill Higgins in my office at bill@chicago47.org or 773-549-2745 if you have any questions or concerns.

2013 Preliminary Menu Vote

Thanks to everyone who helped build this year's list of preliminary menu projects.   We have received many emails over the past week and our list has grown to 100 projects.  With only $1.3 million in funding available, we won't be able to complete all of the projects listed.  However, we will assess each one and give you the opportunity to vote on which project is most important for you. If you still haven't gotten your submission into my office yet, be sure to send it to Jim at jim@chicago47.org by tomorrow at 5pm.

Voting will open on Tuesday, March 5th, at 9am and continue until Tuesday, March 19th, at 11:59pm.  You will receive an email from me on Tuesday that will contain the link you can follow to cast your vote.  We will also post the link for the vote on chicago47.org, facebook and twitter.  If someone you know doesn't have access to a computer, please tell them to come in or call my office and we will provide them with a paper version of the ballot.  Voting is open to all 47th Ward residents.

While votes are being cast, the 47th Ward Team will be surveying each project on the preliminary list.  I will use the information from those site visits, your votes and data from the city to make the final menu list for 2013.  We will host a meeting in April to roll out the 2013 Menu and answer any questions you may have.  Thanks in advance for your participation in this process.

Have a great weekend!

Sincerely,

Ameya

Notice: Brown Line Service Disruptions

As part of the Chicago Department of Transportation's (CDOT) ongoing reconstruction of the 90-year-old Wells Street Bridge over the Chicago River, the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) will temporarily cease train service on the bridge for two 9-day periods in early March and late April.

  • March 1, beginning at 10 p.m. and resume in time for the morning rush on Monday, March 11;
  • Friday, April 26, beginning at 10 p.m. and resuming in time for the morning rush period on Monday, May 6.

Upgrades to additional track and structures in the area will increase safety and reliability for customers and is part of the CTA's $33.8 million Loop Track Renewal project launched in March 2012. By performing the work while CDOT completes the Wells bridge repairs, CTA will reduce the duration of the work by eight days.  Additionally, combining the work will save CDOT and CTA $500,000 in construction coordination costs.

The CTA has developed a comprehensive alternative service plan incorporating additional bus service, shuttle buses, some rerouted trains, and a Loop shuttle train to alleviate some of the temporary inconveniences for both weekday and weekend riders.

Lincoln Square Friendship Center.
The Lincoln Square Friendship Center is a new initiative led by many clergy members in the 47th Ward.  During monthly 47th Ward Clergy Meetings several members discussed the need for another pantry to serve the hungry in our area.  Those discussions led them to research and investigate opening a new pantry.

After their initial exploration and research, the group decided to team up with the North Park Friendship Center.  They were 100% ready for a 2nd location and were happy to help the new venture in every way through their relationship with Greater Chicago Food Depository.  There are 5 neighborhood churches that are committed to the new pantry.  Please consider supporting this new initiative aimed at fighting hunger in our community.  Information on the fundraiser can be found below.

Jam For Bread Fundraiser

Bring in Your Old Linens.  We got a large number of towels and donations this week and they're all headed to a local shelter.  Thanks to everyone who donated.

When you clean out your linen closet please think of the abandoned pets who are awaiting their forever homes at local shelters and foster homes. Bring us your old towels, blankets and sheets and we will deliver them.

Sulzer needs your old games.  Thanks to our neighbors who have donated games for the Sulzer's Game Night!  If you have games that your family no longer uses, please bring them to the 47th Ward Office or to Sulzer Library. Their ever-popular "Game Night" could use a few more board games like Sorry, Chess, Life, Uno, Jenga, Rummy Cube, etc.

Water Main for Leavitt

City contractor has replaced the 1895 water main under Leavitt St. from Irving Park to Montrose.  Crews have restored the concrete base course.  Asphalt resurfacing will come in the spring.  To see the residents' notice, please click here

Sewer Mains for Wolcott and Ravenswood

City crews have finished installing sewer pipes on Wolcott (Addison to Bradley) and Ravenswood (Belmont to Roscoe). Curbline to curbline asphalt resurfacing will take place in the Spring once temperatures allow.  To see the residents' notice, please click here.

Lawrence Avenue Streetscape Update

The Chicago Department of Procurement Services will soon post bid request for the Lawrence Ave Streetscape project. Their process generally takes 2-3 months so the start date will be delayed until May or June.  We expect the project to stay on schedule, completing construction between Western and Damen by the end of the 2013 construction season, however tree planting and other landscaping will probably be put off until 2014, when they will be starting construction from Damen to Clark.  This will not impact the progress of the Ravenswood Station commercial development or the Metra station project.

Metra Traffic Closures and Detours

  • Leland detours and bridge closure will be up until June 28, 2013.
  • Ravenswood from Lawrence to Leland will have parking restrictions until June 28, 2013.
  • Lawrence: Eastbound lane restriction for demolition March 2-5, 2013
  • Foster
    • Full CLOSURE March 12 - 14 & March 19, 2013.
    • Lane restrictions at Foster March 15 - April 12, 2013.
  • Irving Park
    • Westbound lane restrictions February 27 - March 8, 2013.
    • Westbound CLOSURE for demolition March 9 - 12, 2013 & April 1 - 6, 2013
    • Eastbound lane restrictions March 13 - 22, 2013
    • Eastbound CLOSURE March 23, 25 - 30, 2013

Parking restrictions and detours may be opened, when possible, and re-closed once work is ready to resume.
