The 47th Ward Office will be closed on the following City Holidays:
Monday, March 4 (Pulaski Day)

Dear Neighbor,

I want to thank everyone who came out to last night's Ward Council meeting to learn about the Aldermanic Menu Program for 2013.  For those who don't know, each year every ward in Chicago is allotted $1.3 million dollars for infrastructure improvement.  This money can be spent on items listed on a menu of projects provided by the city.

The presentation from last night's meeting can be found here.  After reviewing block audits, 311 data and concerns brought to our office throughout the last year, we have compiled a preliminary list of menu projects.  This list does not represent all possible projects and completion of everything listed would cost far more than the $1.3 million budgeted for improvements in the 47th Ward.  Additionally, we are still waiting on information about this year's menu program from the city.  We are not sure which types of projects will be included in this year's menu, or which streets will be selected for new water and sewer mains.

That being said, I want your feedback to help determine which projects are most needed.  On Tuesday, March 5th, my office will launch an online survey to get your views on the preliminary list.  All you'll have to do is enter your name and address along with your telephone or email and vote on which projects that interest you.  You will be able to vote for as many or few of the projects as you like.  If you do not have access to a computer, you can call my office or come in and we will provide you with a paper version of the survey.  The survey will be open through Tuesday, March 19th.

For the next week, you can submit projects you don't see on the preliminary list that you would like to be considered as part of this process.  Typical menu projects are street resurfacing, alley resurfacing, curb & gutter replacement, pedestrian crossing signs and other hard infrastructure repairs.  Keep in mind that items already budgeted for in previous years will be completed this season and do not appear on the preliminary list for 2013.  Please send your submissions for the preliminary list to Jim Poole in my office at jim@chicago47.orgSubmissions must be received by Friday, March 1st.

We will host another Ward Council Meeting April to go over the final menu recommendations for the 47th Ward and to discuss the data used to come to those determinations.  I look forward to working with all of you to ensure that this year's menu dollars are spent wisely.

Have a great weekend!

Sincerely,

Ameya

Snow Related Parking Bans
From December 1, 2012 to April 1, 2013 certain arterial streets in Chicago have two additional types of parking restrictions related to snow fall. One pertains to times when there is 2 inches or more of snow on the street and the other restricts overnight parking, regardless of snowfall. See maps here.  Please call or email the 47th Ward Office with any questions.
Notice: Brown Line Service Disruptions

As part of the Chicago Department of Transportation's (CDOT) ongoing reconstruction of the 90-year-old Wells Street Bridge over the Chicago River, the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) will temporarily cease train service on the bridge for two 9-day periods in early March and late April.

  • March 1, beginning at 10 p.m. and resume in time for the morning rush on Monday, March 11;
  • Friday, April 26, beginning at 10 p.m. and resuming in time for the morning rush period on Monday, May 6.

Upgrades to additional track and structures in the area will increase safety and reliability for customers and is part of the CTA's $33.8 million Loop Track Renewal project launched in March 2012. By performing the work while CDOT completes the Wells bridge repairs, CTA will reduce the duration of the work by eight days.  Additionally, combining the work will save CDOT and CTA $500,000 in construction coordination costs.

The CTA has developed a comprehensive alternative service plan incorporating additional bus service, shuttle buses, some rerouted trains, and a Loop shuttle train to alleviate some of the temporary inconveniences for both weekday and weekend riders.

Lincoln Square Friendship Center.  The Lincoln Square Friendship Center is a new initiative led by many clergy members in the 47th Ward.  During monthly 47th Ward Clergy Meetings several members discussed the need for another pantry to serve the hungry in our area.  Those discussions led them to research and investigate opening a new pantry.

After their initial exploration and research, the group decided to team up with the North Park Friendship Center.  They were 100% ready for a 2nd location and were happy to help the new venture in every way through their relationship with Greater Chicago Food Depository.  There are 5 neighborhood churches that are committed to the new pantry.  Please consider supporting this new initiative aimed at fighting hunger in our community.  Information on the fundraiser can be found below.

Jam For Bread Fundraiser

Bring in Your Old Linens.  We got a large number of towels and donations this week and they're all headed to a local shelter.  Thanks to everyone who donated.

When you clean out your linen closet please think of the abandoned pets who are awaiting their forever homes at local shelters and foster homes. Bring us your old towels, blankets and sheets and we will deliver them.

Sulzer needs your old games.  Thanks to our neighbors who have donated games for the Sulzer's Game Night!  If you have games that your family no longer uses, please bring them to the 47th Ward Office or to Sulzer Library. Their ever-popular "Game Night" could use a few more board games like Sorry, Chess, Life, Uno, Jenga, Rummy Cube, etc.

CAPS Report. During our February Forward Chicago Lunch Bunch, one of  our members mentioned she had attended a CAPS meeting the night before. Here is a write-up what she learned - thanks, Evelyn!

"A CAPS meeting was held at Kindred Hospital on Tuesday, February 19th.  The crime statics for January were presented.  Theft was down which consisted of theft from Jewel Supermarket and automobiles.  It was stressed that one should not tempt thieves by leaving valuables in the car.

Concerns of cars not obeying the stop signs on Wilson Ave and graffiti high up on buildings were discussed.  If the graffiti is out of reach of the graffiti blasters, it is the responsibility of the building owner to remove it.  The next meeting will take place on Tuesday, March 19th at 7PM at Kindred Hospital, 2544 W Montrose Ave.  Free parking is available in the hospital parking lot across the street on Montrose Ave."
