Dear Neighbor,
I hope you're staying safe and warm during this wintry week. Plows cleared and salted our residential streets last night, but icy build-up still remains in some areas. Exercise caution when driving and leave yourself plenty of time to reach your destination. Please remember to clear the sidewalks adjacent to your property of accumulated ice and snow. Snow and ice on sidewalks makes travel difficult for all of us. Not only is removing snow the neighborly thing to do, but it is required by ordinance.
If you need assistance having your sidewalk shoveled or want to help someone else clear theirs, you should check out the Chicago Snow Corps. This program links those in need of assistance with able-bodied neighbors willing to help.
For full information on the city's snow removal program and various initiatives, visit chicagoshovels.org.

Tax Information from Cmsr. Fritchey
The first installment tax bills are being mailed the end of January, so people will have them in their mailboxes by February 1, 2013. Due date will be March 1, 2013. Right now Cook County is on track to mail the second-installment bills out the end of June, with a due date of August 1, 2013. That is subject to some change, but August 1 is the state mandated due date, so they are working very hard to meet it. Senior exemption and senior freeze applications were already mailed. The deadline has been extended until February 20, 2013. Long-Time forms have not been mailed out yet, but we can expect those to go out in the next couple of months.

Education Update
Amundsen High School and McPherson Elementary are working together to build a music program and pipeline. Sean Reidy, who is the orchestra director at Amundsen has a great vision and corresponding program that just started last week. It includes a music training program (starting with current 4th and 5th grade students) at McPherson on several instruments - violin, cello, etc.
They started the program last week and had 17 students from McPherson, plus Amundsen student mentors to help coach and teach. Sean described the students to me as "engaged, inquisitive and on task". The idea is that Sean from Amundsen can build a pipeline of talent from McPherson to have students ready to join the Orchestra when they arrive at Amundsen for high school. Marianne Turk
, IB Coordinator is leading the work and partnership on the McPherson side. It is such a cool idea - great for the kids, more arts programs at McPherson, stronger ties between McPherson and Amundsen - at the school and student level. (Update Courtesy of Kim Silver, Friends of McPherson)
There are all sorts of wonderful happenings at Waters School. Several students received bronze medals& gold medalist who will go to March citywide CPD Science Fair. Waters has an award winning ecology program and have recently been awarded a grant. Volunteer opportunities abound, as Waters Parents are a key ingredient to the success at school. Want to learn more or get tips on what you can do for your school. Sign up for their informative and inspiring newsletter by sending an email. Ravenswood School Fundraiser Goes Black & White
Support the 47th Ward's rising gem for public, fine arts-focused education. Black & White for Green will set the mood as the Ravenswood Elementary School community gathers at DANK Haus in Lincoln Square on Saturday, March 16, from 6:30 to 11:00 p.m., for our 5th annual Spring Forward celebration and auction. Hosted by Friends of Ravenswood School, guests will enjoy this year's theme with gourmet food, a signature drink, décor, event favors, and the crisp stylings of live classical guitar. Show Ravenswood unity by wearing--you guessed it-black, white, or both. That's ladies and gents. Go for dressy cocktail garb. Your best accessory? Green! That is, your generous donation to the deserving students and teachers at their highly ranked, diversely populated school. In addition to the live auction that evening, they'll kick off their online silent auction beginning that weekend, which allows them to bring in even more family, friends, and neighbors to help their rising school, located at the corners of Paulina and Montrose. Get information and event tickets, or make a cash or auction donation, by visiting ravenswoodelementary.org. Click on the Spring Forward button on the home page. Check back for an auction preview on the site in early March. Thank you! With neighborhood help, Spring Forward has raised a cumulative $130,000 put right to work in Ravenswood's classrooms.

Dara Reports
Plant Talk at Gethsemane Garden Center Greenhouse. It was cold and snowy out on Saturday morning, as 30 plant lovers bundled up, brushed off their cars and enjoyed a wonderful morning in the Gethsemane Greenhouse. We all appreciate the informative session they offered and the questions they answered regarding all aspects in the care of houseplants. Some took advantage of the discount they offered our group to purchase lush new plants to brighten our homes as we wait for Spring. If you would like a copy of the instructive handouts they gave us, let me know. Many thanks to everyone at Gethsemane - they really know what it means to be a good neighbor.
Greenhouse Assistant/Sales Associate full-time (year round) and part-time (spring/seasonal) positions are available at Gethsemane Garden Center. Heavy lifting required, very fast paced work! Houseplant knowledge/experience preferred, but will train the right candidate. Must enjoy working with the public and present a positive attitude. Fax resumes to (773)878-2371 Attn: Greenhouse or via email.
Loyola University Chicago/LUC has posted a job opportunity to advance composting in the City coordinating waste haulers, large organic waste generators and working with Loyola interns. You can find more information here.
Sulzer needs your old games. If you have games that your family no longer uses, please bring them to the 47th Ward Office or to Sulzer Library. Their ever-popular "Game Night" could use a few more board games like Sorry, Chess, Life, Uno, Jenga, Rummy Cube, etc.
