Dear Neighbor,
On September 12, the CTA Board approved a "decrowding plan" that calls for the elimination of the #11 Lincoln bus between Leland and Fullerton starting December 16, 2012. I, like so many of you, have expressed my strong objections to the CTA. Since September, I have written formal letters and made several calls to the CTA and Mayor Emanuel's office. In addition, my office has been encouraging the citizen petitions, helping to organize neighbors, and working with community organizations and our 47th Ward Council to rally neighbors around the #11 bus. Finally, I have been consistently reaching out to reporters and journalists about the devastating impacts of eliminating this critical bus. Despite all of our efforts the CTA still intends to move forward with this ill-advised plan. The #11 bus is a critical piece of what makes the Ward so livable. Older adults, parents, students, seniors and long-time residents of the 47th Ward and City rely on the Lincoln bus to connect them with grocery stores, libraries, doctor's offices and other needed services. The elimination of this bus will also force the disabled to get alternative service through Pace's para-transit services. Instead of a fixed fare, the disabled will pay more than $6 per ride. This cut may force people out of our neighborhood and out of the City. The elimination of the bus also severs a direct connection to critical cultural and civic infrastructure like the Old Town School of Folk Music, Sulzer Library (only one of two City regional libraries) and Welles Park to name a few. People of all ages enjoy the restaurants, shopping and entertainment available on Lincoln Avenue. They also rely on quick access to Jewel Foods and Trader Joe's. The elimination of this bus will have an impact on all of the residents and businesses along this stretch of Lincoln. Public transit is needed to make our neighborhoods livable and this elimination will devastate our community. On Monday, December 10, I am chartering buses to take concerned residents to the CTA's Budget Hearing. The meeting will be held at CTA Headquarters located at 567 W. Lake Street, 2nd Floor at 6pm. Buses will be leaving from the North Center Senior Satellite Center at 4040 N. Oakley Avenue and the Golden Apple Restaurant at 2971 N. Lincoln Avenue. To reserve a spot on a bus leaving from the North Center Senior Satellite Center call Liza Martin at 773-520-8015. To reserve a spot on a bus leaving from Golden Apple, please call Nick Alex at 847-219-2153. Space is limited. Please make your reservations as soon as possible. You can also ride the #11 bus to Wells & Lake and walk 4 blocks west to CTA Headquarters. I hope that you will join me in taking a stand against the elimination of our #11 bus. Sincerely,

Commission on School Utilization Community Meeting
|
Chicago Public Schools (CPS) CEO Barbara Byrd-Bennett announced the appointment of a nine-member Commission on School Utilization, composed of stakeholders with different experience and expertise, to help the District make more informed decisions around school actions and better invest resources that will help kids access a high-quality education.
The Commission is charged with leading a community engagement process and gathering information by launching a rigorous, transparent and open dialogue with school communities over the next several months. To fulfill that charge, the Commission will be seeking the input of education researchers, academics, community leaders, parents, teachers and public safety officials and other stakeholders. It will facilitate community conversations by holding meetings around Chicago, and will provide citizens various opportunities to have their voices heard.
The Commission on School Utilization Community Meeting for the north side has been scheduled on Friday, December 14 from 7:00pm - 9:00pm, and will take place at Horner Park, 2741 W. Montrose Avenue.
If you are unable to attend, your comments and feedback may be submitted to the Commission on the School Utilization's website, under the "Schedule" tab.
The CPS Space Utilization and Enrollment Data for School Year 2012-2013 has been posted on the CPS website.

Adoptables on the Chicago47.org
|
We have created a new "Adoptables" section of the 47th Ward's website , where monthly we will feature dogs and cats from local shelters in our neighborhood that are looking for their forever homes.
All of this information is under "Animal Issues" on our website. As we all know there is a huge issue in our city and our country with people who believe that pets are a throw-away item. The groups and agencies that you will read about in the adoptables report are just a few of the places where you can find these lovable dogs and cats who are ready for their "forever homes."

During the holiday season, Ravenswood Community Services (RCS) collects hats, mittens, gloves, and scarves to hand out to neighbors in need. This year, RCS will distribute the warm items on December 20th at the Tuesday Night Food Pantry and Community Kitchen. Chicago's winter is long and cold, and many of our neighbors need help to stay warm. Please consider donating new or handmade warm accessories for your neighbors this year. Adult sized hats, mitten, and gloves are needed most for this distribution.
Please drop off your donations at Alderman Pawar's office by Tuesday, December 11.

In 1993, RCS began handing out bags of groceries to about 20 neighbors through the front doors of All Saints' Episcopal Church. Today, this vibrant non-profit serves about 350 neighbors each week and implements strategic neighborhood change through its feeding programs and through a partnership with Ravenswood School.

A member of the Addison Street Community Church at the corner of Addison and Hamilton, came in to the office this week and tells us he is happy to report the laminated signs we gave him to remind folks about the leash law and picking up after their dog. They report this has really solved that problem on the parkways near the church. They highly recommend posting the signs, but remember to only post them on private property. If you would like signs, please stop by our office.
We received several requests from around the ward to help bring Christmas to families who are in need in our community. These items will be collected here in our office and we will distribute them to the various schools, pantries and Toys for Tots. Your continued generosity is greatly appreciated.
