Dear Neighbor,
Earlier this year, I had the honor of being named to the Edgar Fellows program in its inaugural year. Developed by former Governor Jim Edgar and the University of Illinois, this fellowship brought 40 young leaders from around Illinois together to promote bipartisanship and dialogue. I met emerging leaders from around the state, and it was interesting to hear how Chicago policies impact downstate policies and vice versa. Most importantly, the purpose of the program is to break down some of the partisan clichés and promote a more thoughtful dialogue, a dialogue that doesn't start and end at party lines.
At the Edgar Fellows' conference, I met Rep. Jason Barickman (R). Jason and I kept in touch, and this past Monday I had the opportunity to tour Jason's district and speak to the political science students he teaches at Illinois State University. During my visit, I met with the Mayor of Pontiac, and the City Councils of Bloomington and Normal. We talked about issues such as casino expansion, pension reform, education policy and electrical aggregation. One thing was very clear: the City of Chicago's budget may have more zeros but the problems facing downstate municipalities mirror ours. It was great to hear their perspectives on the issues and I'm very appreciative for the open conversations. It certainly helped inform my thinking.
It was a great day and I thank Rep. Barickman. I also thank Gov. Edgar for putting the Edgar Fellows program together and for giving me an opportunity to participate.
Senior Event
I am happy to report that over the next month, my office, the 47th Ward Senior Council and Forward Chicago will be hosting a number of events for our seniors. The first event, "A Conversation On Aging," will be held this Saturday at the Old Town School of Folk Music. We also have a holiday luncheon scheduled in mid-December planned for over 500 seniors. Putting on these events requires many hours of work and outreach to many of our community partners and businesses. Our senior programming would not be possible without the generous support of organizations like the Northcenter Chamber of Commerce.
I will be attending the tree lighting ceremony in Giddings Plaza on Saturday, December 1 from 4:30pm to 5:30pm. I hope you will attend. For more information, please click here. Please don't forget to shop locally as we enter this season of giving!
Sincerely,

Welcome New Business: Elizabeth Restaurant, 4835 N. Western
|
Chef/Owner Iliana Regan began One Sister as a means to showcase her food, talent and sustainable concepts to the Midwest. Her dream was to turn her business into a restaurant by taking the smallest steps possible, building a clientele and name in whatever way she could. She began in the summer of 2008 by taking her vegetables, homegrown goods and foraged items to farmers' markets. Her pierogi, a farmers' market staple, filled with local, homegrown or foraged goods became the hit. A short time later her pierogi reached local stores and press, receiving rave reviews. She then pushed One Sister to the next level by opening her home so guests could experience her more dazzling creations. This crucial step allowed for a wider range of acknowledgment and financial support. She has now accomplished her goal, Elizabeth Restaurant, a tribute to her sister.
Iliana Regan is self-taught and relies on land, nature and life as her inspirations. Her food is an artistic expression and replication of the world around her. Elizabeth Restaurant strives to remain as local, organic and sustainable as possible. Elizabeth's Mission is to highlight nose to tail, root to branch, and farm to table Midwestern bounty. Elizabeth's Goal is to build community through love of food and nature. Elizabeth sells tickets rather than taking reservations to keep in line with our mission. We want to remain as earth conscious as possible, eliminate waste, keep our staff small and our space intimate. We will work with fine and rare ingredients. This is all a means to do our best to serve you. To keep up to date on our ticket sales and news you can follow us on our Facebook page and twitter feed.

To read more about them visit the blog. Elizabeth welcomes you to New Gatherer Cuisine.

47th Ward Block Audits - DUE DEC. 1
|
Every year each Chicago ward is allotted $1.3 million to be used for a "menu" of infrastructure maintenance and improvements in their wards. In the 47th Ward, my office is striving to make the process for allocating this menu fund as inclusive, participatory and expeditious as possible. To this end we have developed a Block Audit. Links to a printable version and online version can be found below.
Online 47th Ward Block Audit
Printable 47th Ward Block Audit
We are striving to have each block in our ward complete the audit. Audits must be completed and returned (or submitted online) to the 47th Ward Office by December 1, 2012. We will review the data from these audits along with data from the City's 311 system and city departments to create a list of possible public projects for your area. This list will be submitted to your local neighborhood group in January and we will ask the groups to rank the possible projects in order of importance.
While $1.3 million never goes as far as we would like, we want to know which priorities are most important to you and your neighbors. If we are not able to fund all identified projects in 2013, we will consider them for the following year. We look forward to working together with all of you to ensure that our menu dollars are being spent where they are needed most.
Please fill out the forms to the best of your ability. If you have questions, please call or email Jim Poole in my office at 773-549-4462 or jim@chicago47.org.

Bring Hats, Mittens, Gloves and Scarves to the 47th Ward Office
|
During the holiday season, Ravenswood Community Services (RCS) collects hats, mittens, gloves, and scarves to hand out to neighbors in need. This year, RCS will distribute the warm items on December 20th at the Tuesday Night Food Pantry and Community Kitchen. Chicago's winter is long and cold, and many of our neighbors need help to stay warm. Please consider donating new or handmade warm accessories for your neighbors this year. Adult sized hats, mitten, and gloves are needed most for this distribution.
Please drop off your donations at Alderman Pawar's office by Monday, December 19.
For more information about Ravenswood Community Services, to make other donations, and to volunteer please visit their website at or contact the RCS office at 773-769-0282.
Ravenswood Community Services (RCS) provides hunger and poverty relief, health services, and life skills education in the Ravenswood and Uptown neighborhoods. In 1993, RCS began handing out bags of groceries to about 20 neighbors through the front doors of All Saints' Episcopal Church. Today, this vibrant non-profit serves about 350 neighbors each week and implements strategic neighborhood change through its feeding programs and through a partnership with Ravenswood School.
