P.S. from Ameya

From time to time we all read something that is truly inspiring. Recently, I read an article in Sports Illustrated that embodies courage, the human spirit, and sacrifice. It's the story of distance runner Rhiannon Hull. It was written by David Epstein. David is  also the younger brother of 47th Ward Chief of Staff Charna Epstein!  I love this article and I read it from time to time. I hope you enjoy it as well.

Dear Neighbor,

The Thanksgiving holiday is tomorrow, and I have a lot to be thankful for.  An incredible amount of work has been accomplished since last Thanksgiving and I want to take a moment to recognize some of our outstanding community partners and neighbors for making a difference in our community. I am very fortunate to have such great partners and great neighbors. This year, I'd like to thank:

  • Emily Klingensmith for championing the renovation of Filbert Playlot Park. After taking office, Emily worked with my office to ensure menu funding was secure and was able to raise $150k from the community in record time! Emily is a selfless advocate for community parks. Thank you Emily!
  • All the 47th Ward Front desk volunteers. We have a small army of volunteers that help our constituent service operation. These volunteers donate hundreds of hours of their time to help you and the 47th ward office. I am so thankful for their public service. A special thank you to: Bette, Char, Ken, Rhoda, Anna, Lenore, Joni, Carol, Marilyn and Matt.
  • Adam Walsh. Adam is working tirelessly to build a new playlot at Ravenswood Elementary School and is an incredible advocate for this excellent neighborhood school. He is a general good guy to our office and his neighborhood.
  • David Brown. David worked with our office and neighborhood associations to open up a community garden on his lot, Montrose Green.
  • All the 47th Ward Committee members. We have many advisory committees in the 47th Ward. These committees help inform my decisions. A big thank you to members of the: Zoning Advisory Committee, Transportation Committee, Senior Council, Quality of Life Committee, and the Green Council.
  • OpenWall Curator, Patricia Larkin Green, and members of the OpenWall committee for 8 beautiful exhibits and opening receptions. The 47th Ward office doubles as an art gallery for local artists. The art brightens our office, makes our office more welcoming, and showcases all the wonderful talent in our ward.
  • Business owners, Ross Outen, from Dolce Casa Café and, Laura & Matt Kollar, of Matty K's. They are always excellent businesses and neighbors -- always doing what they can to build community. Including, but not limited to, hosting Winnemac Neighbors and North Lincoln Square Neighbors block clubs' meetings, providing neighborhood bulletin boards, and a consistent willingness to help with clean-ups, gardeners discounts, neighborhood gatherings, etc.
  • Karen Ami. Karen is the founder and artistic director of the only mosaic school in the country. The Chicago Mosaic School worked with our Senior Council and Forward Chicago (LINK) to design and create a mosaic honoring 47th Ward Seniors.
  • Forward Chicago volunteers: Joni Croll, Char Kawa, Karen Kolb, Helene Wineberg, and Roger Wright for their dedication and hard work to create: www.ForwardChicago.org. Forward Chicago is the first of its kind non-profit designed to keep residents active, engaged and involved in their community as they age. You will be hearing more about Forward Chicago in the coming weeks and months!
  • Susan Russell. Susan volunteered for many years to help care for animals in area shelters. Susan came to us with a wonderful idea - she offered to oversee, write and coordinate a monthly article about area shelters. She works incredibly hard to place rescued animals in good families. Thank you Susan.
  • Stephen Reynolds. I have talked at length about creating a K-12 neighborhood school system in 47th Ward and Stephen ran with this concept. In less than a year, he has spearheaded the creation of the Friends of Amundsen and is working countless hours to engage my office, GROW47, and Amundsen feeder schools.
  • Northcenter Neighborhood Association. The NNA has dedicated many hours on various social justice issues in our ward. I am thankful for their thoughtfulness, vision, and commitment to issues such as affordable housing.
I would like to thank you.Serving as your alderman has been an incredible honor and opportunity. Thank you for the opportunity to serve.

And, finally, I want to thank my dedicated team and our 47th Ward Streets and Sanitation crew. The 47th Ward Team works so hard in service to you. I want to extend a big thank you to Charna, Ernie, Jim, Bill and Dara. I also want to thank Erick Norton (47th Ward Superintendent) and the dedicated men and women of Streets and Sanitation. They work very hard to keep our streets and alleys clean and do so without any fanfare. I want to extend a big thank you to them for their public service.

Be safe and have a happy holiday weekend.

Sincerely,

Ameya

Education Update

Ravenswood School Earns High Marks. Just as students receive report cards, so do CPS schools. New school progress reports for all CPS schools were released last week, measuring student growth, student performance and other important metrics. Ravenswood School (at Montrose and Paulina) posted the highest student growth scores in the Ravenswood Ridge Network, which is comprised of 41 CPS elementary schools in this part of the city including Bell, Coonley, Blaine, Nettelhorst, Audubon and Burley.  Student Growth is important because it measures student progress from the beginning of the school year to the end, and gauges advancement made by students at all performance levels.  Educators are placing just as much importance on student growth as they are on student performance.

Ravenswood School achieved an overall Level 1 rating, which is the highest rating available. To link to Ravenswood School's full progress report and a letter from Barbara Byrd-Bennett, CEO of CPS, click here.  To find progress reports for other schools, click here

Waters Reached a New Flower Power High. Our community came together and pledged for what we believe in.  103 families contributed this year and that's incredible! As of Thursday night, the Flower Power pledge drive made $55,000! Yes, $55,000 after expenses.Waters Today had set an ambitious goal of $45,000 and you helped them skyrocket past that number. Thank you!

They are grateful to all who made a financial commitment, volunteered their time and expertise, and helped make the Flower Power pledge drive and party a phenomenal success! Your generosity and dedication are responsible for the continuation of Waters' wonderful full-time Music and Ecologyprograms. Thank your friends and celebrate an amazing start toward this year's goal of $115,000.

Pledges are ongoing, so if you can make one please do it. Any amount is deeply appreciated! Just go to  waterstoday.org.

47th Ward Block Audits - DUE DEC. 1

Every year each Chicago ward is allotted $1.3 million to be used for a "menu" of infrastructure maintenance and improvements in their wards. In the 47th Ward, my office is striving to make the process for allocating this menu fund as inclusive, participatory and expeditious as possible.  To this end we have developed a Block Audit.  Links to a printable version and online version can be found below.

Online 47th Ward Block Audit

Printable 47th Ward Block Audit

We are striving to have each block in our ward complete the audit. Audits must be completed and returned (or submitted online) to the 47th Ward Office by December 1, 2012. We will review the data from these audits along with data from the City's 311 system and city departments to create a list of possible public projects for your area. This list will be submitted to your local neighborhood group in January and we will ask the groups to rank the possible projects in order of importance.

While $1.3 million never goes as far as we would like, we want to know which priorities are most important to you and your neighbors. If we are not able to fund all identified projects in 2013, we will consider them for the following year. We look forward to working together with all of you to ensure that our menu dollars are being spent where they are needed most.

Please fill out the forms to the best of your ability. If you have questions, please call or email Jim Poole in my office at 773-549-4462 or jim@chicago47.org.

Help Needed for Community Thanksgiving Dinner

23rd Community Thanksgiving Dinner

Donations of food (meats, sides, desserts, beverages), giftcards or money to help defray costs are needed to support this dinner, as well as volunteers for set-up, drivers, and assistance during the meal.  For more information on getting involved, please email Carolyn Bull at carolynbull@sbcglobal.net.  For complete information, please click here

Bring Hats, Mittens, Gloves and Scarves to the 47th Ward Office

RCS Logo

During the holiday season, Ravenswood Community Services (RCS) collects hats, mittens, gloves, and scarves to hand out to neighbors in need.  This year, RCS will distribute the warm items on December 20th at the Tuesday Night Food Pantry and Community Kitchen. Chicago's winter is long and cold, and many of our neighbors need help to stay warm.  Please consider donating new or handmade warm accessories for your neighbors this year.  Adult sized hats, mitten, and gloves are needed most for this distribution.

Please drop off your donations at Alderman Pawar's office by Monday, December 19.

For more information about Ravenswood Community Services, to make other donations, and to volunteer please visit their website at  or contact the RCS office at 773-769-0282.

Ravenswood Community Services (RCS) provides hunger and poverty relief, health services, and life skills education in the Ravenswood and Uptown neighborhoods.  In 1993, RCS began handing out bags of groceries to about 20 neighbors through the front doors of All Saints' Episcopal Church.  Today, this vibrant non-profit serves about 350 neighbors each week and implements strategic neighborhood change through its feeding programs and through a partnership with Ravenswood School.

Addison Underbridge Meeting

Dara Reports

We received several requests from around the ward to help bring Christmas to families who are in need in our community.  These items will be collected here in our office and we will distribute them to the various schools, pantries and Toys for Tots.  Your continued generosity is greatly appreciated. You are what make this wonderful neighborhood what it is.

  • Neighborhood schools have identified many families who are in very dire need this Christmas. We are collecting gift cards for these families. Some suggestions would be: grocery stores, Target, Sears (by 12/16)
  • Warm hats, scarves, gloves and mittens for our neighborhood pantry clients - especially in dark colors for adults.
  • Canned hams for Christmas food packages. (by 12/20)
  • Toys for Tots (by 12/14)

We want to thank Gaia International for their generous donation of dozens of winter coats that will be distributed next week.

What a green and growing 1st year our Gardening Group has had! We learned about Trees from our city's leading arborist, Jeff Brink - what a treasure he is. If you would like to have the notes on any of this year's topics, please send me an email. Thanks to everyone who have shared their knowledge and love for the earth with us.  Please plan to join us in January for a celebration and planning session for next year.
