CTA BUS CUTS
Many of you have come in or called about the CTA's decision to discontinue the #11 and #145/148 Wilson Buses starting in December.  If you would like to let CTA President Forrest Claypool know your view on this elimination of service please send an email, call 312-681-5022, or send a letter to President Claypool at 567 W. Lake Street, Chicago, IL 60661.

Dear Neighbor,

I am excited to report that the final piece of legislation associated with the Ravenswood Station (Mariano's & L.A. Fitness) project passed City Council yesterday! Many of you have been waiting for a long time to see something happen on the empty Sears parking lot. In the past, there were numerous attempts and false starts to develop this site, and with double and triple the amount of tax increment financing. After taking office, I started working with a new development team to put together a project that was financially responsible and one that incorporates community input. The project we passed yesterday was a result of numerous community meetings, ward council meetings and feedback from you. Thank you for participating throughout the process.

The legislation we passed yesterday does the following for our community and the City:

  • Creates over 200 full-time retail jobs at Mariano's
  • Creates over 175 full-time construction jobs for the commercial development
  • Generates property tax revenue from $120,000 annually to $1.23 million annually
  • Generates sales tax from $0 today to $800,000 annually

I want to take a moment to thank my team for working so hard to move this project forward. Since taking office, my office has advanced over a quarter billion dollars in major projects. To see some of these projects, click here.  Finally, all of these projects required multiple pieces of legislation and developing key relationships. We have worked very hard to build relationships with City departments, the Mayor's office and with my colleagues so that we can deliver you projects such as the Kerry Wood Cubs Field, the demolition of Ravenswood Hospital and the building of Lycée Français, the Lawrence Avenue Streetscape, Ravenswood Station, the Bell School addition, the Clark Park Boathouse, Ravenswood Terrace and the Ravenswood Metra Station. I am especially proud that these projects were advanced in my first year-and-a-half in office. The next project in the pipeline is the Coonley School expansion. I look forward to our continued work with Principal Greg Zurawski, CPS and the Coonley community on this.

2013 City Budget

Yesterday the City Council approved the 2013 budget with a 46-3 vote and I voted YES. This year's budget does not include any increases to fees, fines or taxes. Some highlights include:

  • New crews for tree trimming, rodent control and graffiti removal.
  • 457 new police officers - largest hire since 2006.
  • Elimination of eight TIF districts.
  • Funding for 20,000 after school and summer jobs for Chicago students.
  • Elimination of a $369 million budget deficit.

Since last year, we have taken major steps to re-invent city government.  Garbage is now picked up on a grid. Open 311 is a reality.  As recently as 2010, the previous City Council and mayor used funds from the parking meter sale to balance the budget.  Since I took office the Mayor and City Council put $35 million back into reserve funds.  And because of the tough decisions made last year, in 2013, we will be able to put additional resources into tree trimming, rodent control and graffiti removal.  I do want to caution you: we are not out of the woods yet.  We need substantive pension reform in the coming year.  Without pension reform, we are looking at catastrophic increases to property taxes.  I am optimistic that state legislators will work with our unions to reform pensions.  Even with pension reforms the City is likely to face large deficits in the coming years.  More tough decisions are needed in the coming years and I will continue to report back to you on my votes, work with you prior to making decisions and represent our community's interests in City Council.

Sincerely,

Ameya

47th Ward Block Audits - DUE DEC. 1

Every year each Chicago ward is allotted $1.3 million to be used for a "menu" of infrastructure maintenance and improvements in their wards. In the 47th Ward, my office is striving to make the process for allocating this menu fund as inclusive, participatory and expeditious as possible.  To this end we have developed a Block Audit.  Links to a printable version and online version can be found below.

Online 47th Ward Block Audit

Printable 47th Ward Block Audit

We are striving to have each block in our ward complete the audit. Audits must be completed and returned (or submitted online) to the 47th Ward Office by December 1, 2012. We will review the data from these audits along with data from the City's 311 system and city departments to create a list of possible public projects for your area. This list will be submitted to your local neighborhood group in January and we will ask the groups to rank the possible projects in order of importance.

While $1.3 million never goes as far as we would like, we want to know which priorities are most important to you and your neighbors. If we are not able to fund all identified projects in 2013, we will consider them for the following year. We look forward to working together with all of you to ensure that our menu dollars are being spent where they are needed most.

Please fill out the forms to the best of your ability. If you have questions, please call or email Jim Poole in my office at 773-549-4462 or jim@chicago47.org.

Chicago's winter is long and cold, and many of our neighbors need help to stay warm.  Please consider donating new or handmade warm accessories for your neighbors this year.  Adult sized hats, mitten, and gloves are needed most for this distribution.

Please drop off your donations at Alderman Pawar's office by Monday, December 19.

For more information about Ravenswood Community Services, to make other donations, and to volunteer please visit their website at  or contact the RCS office at 773-769-0282.

Ravenswood Community Services (RCS) provides hunger and poverty relief, health services, and life skills education in the Ravenswood and Uptown neighborhoods.  In 1993, RCS began handing out bags of groceries to about 20 neighbors through the front doors of All Saints' Episcopal Church.  Today, this vibrant non-profit serves about 350 neighbors each week and implements strategic neighborhood change through its feeding programs and through a partnership with Ravenswood School.
